material based portrait

bubbly birthday

watercolor, Bloonies plastic balloons, Pentel brush pen

10x7.5"

I made this piece because my birthday was not too long ago and we were messing around with those bubbles that you could blow up and they would turn plasticky, to the point where you could handle them. So I had the idea to create a piece where I used the bubble goo as the material for confetti. I was kind of set on doing myself as the portrait from the beginning, but I didn't want the portrait to be just a boring portrait, so I added a 0.5 lens to my reference photo.

I started out with a brush pen drawing, then started arranging confetti, to see what exactly I wanted to do. I took a photo of how I wanted them arranged, then went in with watercolor. After I super glued the confetti pieces on.

I switched up the color of the sweater to better my color and the bubbles, but also to contrast the yellow confetti. And I wasn't thinking about it but the lightness of the watercolor also worked in favor of contrasting the deep colors of the confetti.
