dark, but light

charcoal, silver leaf

24x18"

I created this piece based on my newly edited SI question: "How can I create movement through my simple shaped objects?". I've been trying to pinpoint my questions so that they make more sense with the drawings I create, and I want to play with movement even more. I also took some feedback and made a greyscale piece just to play with the idea of color more, so it gave me the idea to use charcoal.

First I did some sketches and started on the foreground clouds/smoke trails. Then I brainstormed on how I can make a better background and have it be very movementy. I came up with making charcoal dust and then brushing that out, and trying to control it, which is hard because the dust just kind of moves around and doesn't stick to the paper. Then I'm thinking of using silver leaf for my object and having some negative outlines to understand what it is. I was originally going to use India ink blots (because they get shiny after they dry in big blots) but I thought that was too high risk, and silver leaf just plays with the idea of light better.

I used charcoal because I knew of the smudgy possibilities, but I didn't think it would go the way I did. I thought I was going to just use my fingers, but I just loved the lines and texture I got from using a hard bristled brush. I also wanted to play with blurring the foreground, because if I was going to use charcoal, I might as well try things I haven't tried. Then I'm going to use silver leaf for my objects because of the idea of light I have with this piece, and how it will be the center of it.
