sustained inv #9

short tempered

watercolor, colored pencil, india ink, cut paper, string, mod podge

I created this piece with my investigation in mind, how can I create movement through my objects? But this time I wanted to think about how my objects might move in a second, minute, or hour from the scene I created. In this piece, the idea is that my object is being held on by a thread and scissors loom overhead, pretty much ready to cut. I wanted the viewer to be able to imagine how it would fall by elongating the entire paper.

I started with a quick sketch on a scrap piece of paper, then transferred that onto my watercolor paper. I masked my object and then started on my watercolor. After it was dry I colored my object and then cut out my scissors, and finally, I glued strings to the back of my paper with Mod Podge.

All of the pent-up stress is shown in color up top and slowly fades as it gets closer to the bottom. I made it white instead of a darker color (which maybe would have made it a much deeper feeling), because I wanted to have the sense that once this object gets cut it becomes free, and I personally represent light colors with this idea. The string is what keeps the object grounded, which is why I added a plethora at the end because once the object becomes free, it'd feel more grounded represented in the strings.
