"I really didn’t have a best friend. You get moved around so much that you don't really make many friends because you may not see them again, for whatever reason . . . You don't have best friends but you have friendships for a long time."

Richard Terry's Story:
Richard Terry is a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was born in the town of Stoughton, Massachusetts, and was raised in Portland, Maine. After Mr. Terry served in the Vietnam War he returned to his hometown of Stoughton and has lived there ever since.

Mr. Terry went into service during December 1968 as an effort to guide his direction in life, for fear of being drafted. Initially, he wanted to be a helicopter pilot, but his eyesight failed him. He is thankful now for his imperfect vision because he fears he wouldn't have made it out of the war with his life as a pilot.

During his service, Mr. Terry was stationed in Valley Forge, PA and later moved to Fort Lee, VA. He served as a medic for hospitals of amputees. Everyday he heroically served the country by treating hurt patients.

Before he served in the military he was accepted to Boston University for eight oared racing. Although he enjoyed the sport, the intensity of eight oared racing swept him off of his feet and he found himself overwhelmed.

Later after the war he was accepted into University of Massachusetts at Amherst and finished his bachelors degree in the sciences...majoring in marine botany. Richard Terry was the first person in his family to go to college.

Richard Terry now works in his family business in the sales branch.
