George Deering's Story:

George Deering is a Vietnam veteran who served in the Coast guard. He left College to join the coast guard in 1966 because he didn't want to get drafted into the Army. He spent his time serving on the S.S. East Wind, an Ice breaker sailing around the world. He traveled to many interesting places like Antarctica and Australia but never came into contact with any danger. Living on the sea was tough and stressful but overall it was a good experience. After his time serving he came home, got married and became an Emergency Room Doctor. He says that sometimes when he sees young people in the hospital that are dealing with addictions, he wishes he could send them to the coast guard in order to have the same life changing experience he had.

The S.S. East Wind was the icebreaker that George Deering
served on for 8 months of his enlistment.
