Herb von Thaden was drafted into the military in 1952 during the Korean War . He was based in Fort Dix , New Jersey where he became a rifle instructor and Sergeant . Because of his right blind eye from childhood, he was not drafted to go over seas to fight for South Korea. Herb served in the military for two years. When he wasn't training others, he was doing office work. Six months from his releasing, he knew he wasn't going over seas so he married at age 19. After he came back from his service his father and himself where forced to sell their farm equipment and farm land. Herbs wife and himself moved to new york and had three sons. Then moving to Cape Cod after spending summers camping in the area. Today Herb reflects back on his days in the military, and would do it all over again one more time.
