Scott Holway's Story:

Scott Holway grew up on the small town of Truro located on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. He lived in a small home with his two brothers and sister. Scott was around the water his whole life and liked the idea of helping out the community he grew up in. When he graduated high school he decided that what was best for him and he joined the Coast Guard. He started the training to become an Aviation Survivals Technician and a helicopter rescue swimmer. The training was very tough and extensive. Out of forty people who went into the training only six stayed to graduate.

Mr. Holway was first stationed at Air Station Cape May, New Jersey. He later transferred to Air Station Cape Cod where he helped his hometown people. In 2005 when Hurricane Katrina hit Mr. Holway flew down to Mobile, Alabama to help out. Scott and his five man crew rescued people off of rooftops of schools and hospitals. He flew on five different missions while down there. Scott saved many lives while in Katrina but the memory that sticks with him the most is a rescue mission 250 miles off of Nantucket back in 2004. When Scott and his crew were flying to a sailboat in forty foot seas with two passengers on it the aircraft iced up at 7,000 feet and they were descending much faster then they intended to. They managed to save the two people but they thought they would have to ditch the aircraft so they wouldn't go down with it. Scott and his pilot have been close friends ever since, partially because they didn't think they would make it home that.

After his time in the service Scott decided to reside back on the cape in Wellfleet and became a Truro, MA police officer. Scott had always thought about what he was going to do after his service and this opportunity came up so he took it. He handled the police academy very well because it was a "dumbed down version of boot camp".

For 20 years Scott Holway risked his life everyday so we could get back to our lives. Even after all that he decided not to retire but instead he protects the people of his hometown. Scott Holway is a hero because he does not do for himself, he does for others.
