Owlbears are a kind of bird that had lost its need for flight instead adopting the more mammal-like appearance of a bear. these creatures are intelligent and peaceful as a race but can grow territorial and violent if it lives nearby more violent creatures that likely attack it often
Culture
the owlbear is a beloved creature by the elves and hated creature by all things evil. they can naturally detect evil and will attack evil creatures with great prejudice. they are also known to come to the aid of intelligent creatures that are being attacked.
while they are known as gentle creatures their reputation can be abandoned while under stress. owlbears that live near ork encampments, troll caves, or even a necromancer hut will most likely be on edge and any creature that enters its boundaries will be seen as an enemy unless explicitly good and in small number.
while owlbears are intellegent they lack the proper organs to speak so besides the language they speak to one another they can not speak any other tongue that they understand.
History
Owlbears on rare occasion will birth an owlbear that doesnt die of old age. if this Owlbear lives beyond adulthood it will start to grow antlers and gain druidic powers. ancient Owlbears are still incapable of speech but with their powerful druidic powers they can have nature speak for them
