the mimic is a paranoia-inducing creature it is the chair you sit on, plate you eat off of, cubbard you pull from, treasure chest you rob from, or even the room you enter.
Culture
the mimic is created in one of two ways. either a tiny piece breaks off and crawls away or a wizard creates it to be used as a trap. mimics come in many shapes and sizes mimicing things of a similar size to them. the youngest mimics will pretent to be a piece of food and once placed into a mouth quickly jump down the throat and eat their way out or turn into a ring or earring and secretly feast on their blood.
mimics can see without eyes in complete darkness as if it was daylight and they had eyes, so most of the time if you can see a mimic it can see you. in addition they cannot die of starvation but will suffer its pain and are immune to slashing and piercing
the strategies of a mimic are surprisingly vast for a creature with 1 intellect and it can even learn to better entice or trick prey as if it had an intellect of 8. but this learning ability is limited to eating and any attempt to train it to do somthing else (ex: roll over) will fail
mimics cannot digest other mimics, so it would not be odd for an especially large mimic to have other mimics inside. on top of that strategy a mimic will look for things to attract prey, a treasure chest will look for gold and magical items to place into its belly even allow people to reach in safely only attacking once it instinctively feels it can get the most out of its surprise attack. a table would act in a similar way by placing food onto plates and simply leaving it on top of itself only eating said food if its starting to spoil
how you can tell if somthing is a mimic is first of all hit it, that may not be guaranteed to be enough to get the mimic to reveal itself so if your still not sure then think about how the weapon interacted with the 'mimic' mimic flesh is always as hard as steel even if it looks and feels like wood. hitting it should feel like hitting steel
Lesser Mimics
made by weaker mages en masse the lesser mimic is a close relative to normal mimics but unlike normal mimics it has difficulty moving at any real speed. because of this its forced to use strategies that are more passive or group oriented such as turning into a stalactite at the top of a cave wall then letting go when enemies are below piercing it with all the speed gravity allows it to reach along with any other nearby lesser mimics using the same strategy. another strategy they might use to to turn into uniquely shaped and expensive looking cups to goad somone into drinking from it, after a few sips when the drinker feels safe drinking from it it will use hidden poison stored in its unique shape. or even the surprising strategy of becoming a weapon then stealthily eating the foes of its user during attacks(without gloves the user may find odd wounds appearing on their hands that werent there before)
Magical Mimics
the rarest mimic by far the magical mimic is more demon then mimic, it is a parasite that 'mimics' an accessory or armor in a way that makes it look like the accessory/armor has flesh and/or organs. these horrific 'items' promise the wearer power in exchange for a meal, that meal being you. created by powerful mages as a way to get powerful magical properties you cannot imbue into a normal magical item such as 'you can insert one [mimics base item] into the mimic. mimic gains all positive effects of item' or 'insert spell scroll, mimic can now cast said spell whenever you want it to without cast time...it consumes you instead of mana'. magical mimics have telepathy and 5 intellect they will try to goad those nearby into wearing them in exchange for power. magical mimics are still neutral for they lack personality their intelligence's only purpose is to convince people to wear it
History
as common mimics eat they grow bigger they do not die of old age so will continue to grow until killed, one mimic grew to such a size it was able to pretend to be an entire cave complex. referred to as "gods mouth" by locals this enormous mimic has grown too lazy to forcefully eat anything instead simply letting things enter its mouth of their own will then it just swallows. it has become a tourist attraction of sorts and guards prevent anyone from entering
