the beautiful mermaid and the handsome merman both have fables told about them in droves by horny teenagers and salty sailors alike. they are an attractive human from the waist up and fish from the waist down
Culture
mermaid are commonly confused as member of the naga race but neither hold any real bonds with the other outside of sharing the same ocean. mermaid are playful and outgoing, even being known to flirt with attractive sailors if they feel safe in approaching
mermaid societies are lacking in structure many assume that their king is neptune (or poseidon they are the same god) due to commonly being portrayed as a merman, this lacks confirmation however and mermaids generally live in small communities of nearby mermaids that gather to socialize and gossip.
the mermen are far more comparable to naga and have been known to appear whenever mermaids are threatened wearing armor made for them and wielding tridents or other piercing weapons for ease of use underwater
it is assumed that deep in the ocean is a 'military compound' of sorts where the men are trained in combat and that they can sense when women are in trouble. because of this, their kind demeanors, and them being every bit as attractive as their female counterparts few women that are saved by them dont also fall for them
mermaids are playful and are known for their beautiful songs but unlike sirens their songs are not magical but it is none the less distracting and calming. a mermaids song will prevent concentration (for spells or picking locks) and warriors from feeling aggression (strength checks reduced across the board). but the mermaid cannot attack while singing and will mostly use this in combat as a way to convince enemies she means them no harm or to delay until the mermen can save her
when a mermaid is by herself they may sing simply because she enjoys doing it. this has been known to cause distracted sailors to crash, the mermaid will normally hurry to their aid apologizing all the while
