ghosts generally look like translucent sentient creatures exceptions will be stated below
Culture
ghosts are a form of natural undead, as such they do not normally form groups. and even when they do its due to a matching issue not in an attempt to reproduce or eat. the main thing in common for all ghosts is the longer they remain as ghosts the more powerful their connection to the prime material plane and in some that makes it far more difficult to sever that connection forcefully
Apparition
apparitions are less 'creature' and more like a 'memory' given form normally born from somthing someone had deeply wanted to do but never did. at first an apparition is a vague fog moving about doing seemingly nothing but as it repeats the same event over and over again it becomes clearer everytime, with century old apparitions even making the surrounding impossible to see forcing passerby to satisfy the memory if they ever want to access what is actually there.
apparitions cannot be harmed by any means nor interacted with, they are merely memories played on repeat like a recording. to remove a apparition one must satisfy whatever caused the apparition to appear in the first place.
an example of what may create a apparition is a man madly in love writing a letter to finally confess only to learn she has been shipped off to marry a noble who took interest in her. the man eventually died having never delivered the letter. the apparition born from this will repeat the events that caused the man to fall in love, the writing of the letter he never delivered, and the transport of that letter to its current location. should the letter ever be delivered to its intended recipient the apparition will finish its final repetition and fade away.
Banshee
while commonly taking the form of a normal ghostly woman her true form is deeply corrupted by her grudge making her look more like a translucent wingless harpy with unhinged jaws
Culture
after the death of a woman deeply resentful for a lovers betrayal a banshee is the ghost of that woman whos obsessive hate has bound her to the prime material. wandering the earth she commonly is drawn to places she was once happy spreading sadness and pain on passerby so she isnt alone in her resentment
some rare banshee are more targeted hunting down the descendents of her lover to reek havoc. ultimately banshee can find no solace in revenge and can only pass-on by force or if convinced somhow that her resentment had been based off a misunderstanding of some sort.
banshee are one if, if not the, most dangerous of ghosts. their scream will send the bravest of men running on a successful save, on a failed one their very soul will run from their body...killing them instantly
Phantom-
phantoms look like translucent versions of various sentient creatures
Culture
more often just called a 'ghost' it is what people normally first imagine when a ghost is mentioned. somone who has died with a deep regret or obsession and only by satisfying that regret or obsession can they peacefully move on. unlike apparitions they can still be forced to move on by a sufficiently prepared exorcist
generally arent malicious in nature and simply wish to be left to try and chase their purpose even if fruitlessly but will act out if somone gets in their way or slights them.
Poltergeist
indistinguishable from a Phantom in looks a Poltergeist is made clear in purpose and power
Culture
while Phantoms have little sway on inanimate objects Poltergeists attachment to their location make the location, in effect, a part of themselves and so can move objects around this location as if its a part of them. levitating objects, messages written on walls, and attempts on forceful eviction are a Poltergeists MO and rarely have reason to hesitate.
normally born from prisoners unable to leave their cell for decades, former kidnapped victims unable to leave where they were held even after death, terminally ill patients confined to a hospital bed even as they miraculously survive to to their 40's and 50's only to finally pass on, and etc. a Poltergeist can be recognize by how it reacts to interlopers seeing the place they have been confined to for so long as theirs and not willing to accept that its time for them to leave so lashing out at any who attempt to occupy what is theirs.
Spectre
much like a Poltergeist a spectre is indistinguishable visually from a Phantom. the spelling for spectre is still correct even if spelled 'specter'
Culture
spectres are poltergeists who instead of fixating on a location fixate on a person perhaps they were an overbearing parent that wont let their child be free even in death, a stalker who has tormented somone for decades and even death wont act as reprieve, or a vengeful rival making their opponents worklife hell for something they had done that ended their career in life. there are cases where spectre attach to individuals for more caring reasons but these are the minority
spectres will attach themselves to their victims like weighted backpacks over time leaving the carrier weak in both physicality and mind. a merchant will find his business opportunities dry up, a lover will find his touch cold and frightening, and a ward will find themselves listening to commands from their memories of a long dead relative they hated
Wraith
wraiths look like cloaks occupied entirely by darkness levitating though the air
Culture
deep negative emotions coalescing into a being vaguely reminiscent of life, a wraith attempts to sate the hatred, sadness, agony, envy, etc. it feels and thinks belongs to it by inflicting pain on death on all it comes across.
a wraith cannot communicate since it was never truely alive. they are one of the only ghosts that gravitate to other undead aiding in the destruction such creatures might enact
Shade
look almost like wraiths at first but the darkness under their cloaks hood has take the shape of a head and the sleeves contain more clearly defined hands
Culture
a rare form of undeath a shade comes to be when a wraith would normally form and the negative emotions that would cause it are almost exclusively from a single individual and said individual dies as, or soon after, the wraith starts forming. these events in tantum will draw the newly born wraith and phantom into a single being: a shade
a shade is a vile creature, while a wraith spreads pain and death it knows no other way of being it has no will behind its actions. a shape does similar with willful purpose-driven glee. resentful to life it uses its power and intellect to undermine the happiness of others commonly prioritizing actions that would lead to the worst outcome for everyone involved, sparing the murderer and punishing the innocent all will wallow in sadness, despair, and hopelessness if the shade has its way
Will-o-Wisp
looking like orbs of floating light of various colors a Will-o-Wisp will be found in forests seemingly following people who look hopelessly lost or beckoning passer-by further in
Culture
unlike every other ghost Will-o-Wisps are not bound through their own connection to somthing nor lingering regrets or emotions but instead due to a locations lingering attachment to them in life. it is not uncommon that people who wander into magical forests are unable to find their way out, people who die in a magical forest will find that even their souls cant find a way out.
a Will-o-Wisp looks the way it does due to them lacking the will to manifest their original forms. most ghosts are able to leverage their powerful attachments to maintain their wills and what they think they look like. a Will-o-Wisp doesnt have their luxury and all the remains is the ghostly glow of a singular point floating about, the color is theorized to be related to the kind of personality they had in life.
wandering Will-o-Wisps are the first sign people normally see that a magical forest is near, a wise onlooker will make note of the direction the Will-o-Wisp moves and avoid that direction else risk being lost themselves. should one find themselves inside a magical forest it will become apparent quickly, markers they placed will be spotted again no matter what direction they go and, most notably, Will-o-Wisps will start to follow them in hopes that they may finally be able to escape should the living find their way out
should one have a means to speak to a Will-o-Wisp they will be very quiet, like someone barely audibly whispering, old Will-o-Wisps dont remember who they were when alive nor what brought them to the magical forest just all their fruitless attempts to leave. younger Will-o-Wisps will still have some inkling as to who they used to be but it will be vague and grow all the more dim as they wander
Revenant
Revenants look like vague outlines of humanoids with glowing eyes
Culture
the most powerful form of ghost the Revenant projects its will out around him causing fear should the Revenant recognize you as an enemy. Revenants are made via the combination of a collective will attempting to accomplish somthing grand is met with the soul(s) of the dead pursuing that grand goal. normally born from loxodon Revenants are sentient and capable of interaction but will always act in pursuance to their goals. should you try to stop them it will view you as an enemy,
Revenants are very active for a ghost and will commonly enact scheme to further its goals. sneaking into towns and making or approving quests while guild staff arent around, whispering things into peoples minds giving them ideas they think are their own, or even hunting and killing those against their goals
