The gnomes are a friendly race of short old people with big noses and pointy hats that like to invent things that either promptly explode or fail in other equally catastrophic ways
Culture
the gnomes are well known as either the friendly old people of the mythological world or as the comedic relief. they are ironically similar to goblins on how they invent things, they throw stuff together and hope it doesnt explode(it normally does). unsurprisingly they consider each other to be racial enemies.
their other racial enemy is the gnoll, due to gnolls being frigging everywhere the gnomes are never able to test out their invention away from where they live without first having to clear the area of gnolls. gnolls are too stupid to share such hatred however
like mentioned they are the kindly old people of the mythological world and because of which any baby faced character that meets a gnome has a 95% chance of being handed candy. many people think that gnomes might be born old
gnome take great pride in the size of their noses, commonly even competing to find out who has the longest one. besides that the men commonly have goatee's and both men and women like hats or hoods with a point at the end
gnomes are very wise and because of which even dumber gnome will still try to think through a problem instead of charge it head on, commonly putting them into the position of the voice of reason in a mercenary group
gnomes have a very unique interaction with magic. their magic resistance is equal to their constitution and for every 3 points of their constitution they have an a +1 to their saving throws vrs magic. unfortunately their resistance to magic also acts as a percent chance that magic items they use will malfunction, this unique relation to magic also plays a part as to why their inventions normally fail
regardless of their fail rate the gnomes are the inventors of the mythological world, for while their inventions fail alot that generally comes down to a 45% chance of catastrophic failure and 30 percent chance of normal failure. with how much the gnomes experiment and invent they are still the originators of many of the things used in their world
History
the gnomes are one of the few races that were able to get a close relationship with dwarves. because of which they have a mutually beneficial relationship of gnomes invent things and dwarves perfect it. this is why the gnomish flying machine was the first(successful) flying construct while the gyrocopter is the most well known.
