the fearsome hydra is a monster to a whole new level, the logic on how to kill a monster simply doesnt work on a hydra. in fact, it only makes it stronger. the hydra is a massive reptilian creature with many heads,
Culture
on first glance a hydra is simply a generic monster big, reptilian, lots of heads. only generic factor its missing is the addition of lion parts...but then you realize its capabilities and realize its a whole new level of monster. when people say "the only way to truly know a monster is dead is too cut off its head" they commonly leave out the hydra, why? because when you cut its head off 2 more grow in its place
a hydra is born with 5 heads and as it gets older these heads will commonly be removed either in combat with prey, other hydra, or against adventurers so most hydra have more then 5 by adulthood. the circulatory system of a hydras neck is very complex to allow for removal, a head cut off will never bleed at the neck
a person can stop the heads from growing by cauterizing the wound before the heads grow. should this happen too many times a hydra may retreat. should it succeed in escaping it will gnaw at the cauterized wound until the heads are able to grow.
when 2 heads grows from a wound in this way they are still connected to one neck, this is only temporary however and as time moves on the necks will split more and more until they are 2 completely independent heads
the hydra is not a picky eater and will even feast on other hydra or its own cut-off heads. there is no limit to the amount of heads a hydra can have. the only limit is its access to nutrients to fuel the creation of more heads. a hydra on the brink of starvation will die if any head is chopped off and its doesnt have enough nutrition to grow 2 new heads and continue to survive at the same time
a hydra can only be domesticated if raised from birth, domesticated hydra are ironically playful. while a domesticated hydra makes for a great pet to guard somthing it makes for a terrible mount due to it being dumb. a hydra will genuinely try to do what you tell it too as a mount but all orders will be interpreted differently by the many heads and as a mount it doesnt really have time to figure it out among them so it simply gets confused and walks randomly
History
some strange primitive tribes of man have made a hydra they raised into their main source of material and food, believing the hydra to be an infinite source of food they feed it and feast on its heads and use its hide and bones to build their city and clothe themselves. hydra however are not an infinite source of food however for one must feed it so that it can grow more heads. this backwards activity however does prove that domesticated hydra do not mind their heads being cut off
Scylla
The scylla is a hydra without legs, with a body like a sea serpent the scylla is near the top of the oceans food chain.
History
with the scylla hailing from the ocean and hydra walking on solid earth, i cant help but ask. which came first? did the hydra evolve from the scylla or the other way around?
