On 7 Jul 1798 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared a surveyor’s assignment for Samuel Street for 800 acres of land transferred from Philip Stedman, Nathan Wheeler, Peter Aster, George Scarlet, D Wm. Johnston, Samuel Cox, Peter Colerick and Peter Larraway being part of 1200 acres granted personally to the said Samuel Street Esquire in Lots 18, 19, 20 and part of 21, 22, 23 Concession 1 with the broken fronts 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23 and Lots 19 and 20 in the Second Concession Willoughby Twp. plus other lands totalling about 4600 acres (Willoughby Township Papers 0190)


Shainholtz, John

On 18 Aug 1832 Stephen Barns of Willoughby, farmer promised to pay Samuel Street Esquire, Executor of the Estate of Samuel Street Esquire, deceased on order four hundreds Provincial Currency in four equal payments for the occupancy for one year from the date hereof of the John Shainholtz lot so known being No. 14—4th Concession Township of Willoughby and to surrender the same at any time before the [……] of the year provided the said Samuel Street should sell no wood or timber to be on it but for the use of the premises and for fuel. Shark, John

On 8 Dec 1800 the Executive Council gave a fiat to John Shark Senr. Of Willoughby Twp. yeoman for 200 acres of land in Lots 25 and 26 Cross Concession of Willoughby Twp. (Willoughby Township Papers 0081)

Shaver, William

On 6 Dec 1794 William Shaver aged 25, born in Somerset County, Jersey, fuller appeared before John Small and took the prescribed oaths and was recommended for a grant of 200 acres of land. On the same date Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith assigned to him 200 acres in Lot 16 Front and First Concession Willoughby Twp. (Willoughby Township Papers 0176)

Shoup, Christian

Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for Christian Shoup for 200 acres of land in Lots 1 and 2 Concession 3 Willoughby Twp. by warrant dated 3 May 1797. (Willoughby Township Papers 0217)

On 11 Dec 1800 the Executive Council of Upper Canada gave a grant to Christian Shoup of Willoughby Twp., yeoman for 200 acres of land in Lots 1 and 2 Concession 3 Willoughby Twp. (Willoughby Township Papers 0215)


Shoup, Christian, John and Martin

On 9 Jun 1852 W. L. Mackenzie wrote to Thomas Hector, Esq., Crown Lands Office concerning Martin Shoup, a German settler. He noted Christian, John and Martin Shoup settled over fifty years since on Lots 1 and 2 Concessions 1 and 2 Willoughby Twp. Christian and John got their deeds but Martin did not take his out of the office. He died many years since bequeathing home and land to Martin Shoup, his brothers son, who has ever since been in peaceful possession and paid the taxes. Martin Shoups lots are 1 and 2 in 4 Con. Christian Shoup took out his patent for 1 and 2 in the 3rd in 1802. Martin and his uncle have cultivated these lots 60 years—since 1797. Dr. Kirk of Canboro wrote to Hector asking what Shoup should do to get his title confirmed. (Willoughby Township Papers 0088)


Shoup, John

On 2 May 1797 the Executive Council of Upper Canada gave a grant to John Shoup for 200 acres of land (Willoughby Township Papers 0286)

Shoup, Martin

On 2 May 1797 the Executive Council of Upper Canada gave a grant to Martin Shoup 200 acres of land (Willoughby Township Papers 0252)

Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for Martin Shoup for 200 acres of land in Lots 1 and 2 Concession 4 Willoughby Twp. an appropriation to be confirmed by deed in twelve months from 1 May 1797 (Willoughby Township Papers 0254)


Stanton, Jonathan and Grace

On 12 Apr 1794 the Land Board read the petition of Jonathan and Grace Stanton for a grant of 200 acres of land and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land in the Township of Fort Erie (sic: Willoughby). The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith who assigned to them 200 acres in Lots 8 and 9 in the Township of Fort Erie (sic: Willoughby) with the broken land on the river containing about twenty acres being in all about 270 acres. Notes of the Acting Surveyor General: These lots pm the plan he received from the Surveyor Generals Office, Quebec, are No. 17 and 18 near Black Creek. The within named Jonathan Stanton having by deed of sale disposed of his share of the within specified Lots No. 8 and 9 in the Township of Fort Erie in favor and behalf of Abram Beam to receive for him the said Grace Stanton a deed or certificate from the Board for his proportion of said lots and the Board have this day in consequence transferred both lots to said Abram Beam. Stedman, Philip

On 16 Aug 1794 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith assigned to Philip Stedman Lot 21 Concession 1 Township No. 1 above Chippewa with the broken land to the northward and eastward containing about 200 acres. This is not transferable except by an act of the Honble. Executive Council (Willoughby Township Papers 0209)

On 16 Aug 1794 the Land Board read the petition of Philip Stedman for a grant and obtained a certificate for two hundred acres in Township No. 1 above Chipawa and referred it to the Surveyor General. The Land Board consented that Philip Stedman may transfer the above lots to Thomas Cummings. (Willoughby Township Papers 0210)

On 30 Dec 1796 Philip Stedman wrote to Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith noted his uncle Philip Stedman Senr. sold to Samuel Street the farm above Chippawa in the Township of Willoughby being by survey near 800 acres completing the quantity due to him. He requested the certificates for No. 14 and 15 on the front to cover the farm as it contained more than was expected when the certificates were taken out. Signed Philip Stedman. On 7 Nov 1791 Henry Stoffell certified that he sold to Henry Weishuhn a lot of one hundred acres of land situated opposite John McEwan for the consideration of ten pounds N. W. C. which Stoffell received in full. Henry Stoffell made his mark, witnessed by John Burch J. P. (Willoughby Township Papers 0021)

On 12 Apr 1792 the Land Board read the petition of Henry Weishuhn for a grant of 200 acres of land and found him qualified to receive a lot. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him 100 acres in Lot 5 Concession 1 on Chippewa Willoughby Township. Note of the Acting Surveyor General: formerly taken up by John Hopkins and improved by Henry Stoffel—sold by him to Henry Weishuhn (Willoughby Township Papers 0023)

The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him 200 acres in Lots 19, 20 and 21 Concession 3 in the Township No. 1 above Chippeway. Written on the reverse: William Lyons having petitioned the Board to transfer the within two lots no. 20 and 21 in the 3rd Concession, the Board have agreed and they are accordingly transferred over to Henry Weishuhn. Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for William Lyons for 450 acres of land in Lots 19, 20 and 21 Concession 3 from the Niagara River and Lots 1 and 2 on the River Welland above the mouth of Lyons Creek in Willoughby Twp. Note in the margin: These Lots are transferred to Mr. Henry Wieshuhn (Willoughby Township Papers 0249)

On 12 Apr 1794 the Land Board read the petition of William Lyons for a grant of 200 acres of land and found him qualified to receive a lot. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith who assigned to him 200 acres in Lots 1 and 2 on Chipewa Creek to the westward of Lyons Creek. Surveyor’s Note: These Lots measure about 240 acres. Written on the back: The within named William Lyons having petitioned the Board for permission to transfer the lotts No. 1 and 2 on Chippewa Creek to the westward of Lyon’s Creek the Board having taken into Consideration the prayer of his petition allow the same & permit the transfer of the said Lotts to Mr. Henry Weishan—Newark 12 Apr 1794. On 1 Jun 1807 James Macklem wrote to Acting Surveyor General William Chewett Esqr. regarding the mill seat. He noted the upper part of the race should be two and a half chains below the mouth of the little river. Mr Cummings and the writer were of the opinion that the Lot Number three on Chippawa in Willoughby was always claimed by one Lyons, who sold to Henry Wieshuhn. Wieshuhn still calls it his. The old gentleman is dead and his son is in the states these eighteen months past so that there is no person here to mention the circumstance to, only the widow and a small family. The old lady is so ill at present that it would be improper to say anything to her on that subject. If she gets better Macklem would let her know that she is in danger of losing it and if she has any just claim, Macklem will communicate it to Chewett. Signed James Macklem. Woods, Henry

On 10 Aug 1795 the Executive Council of Upper Canada read the petition of Henry Woods stating that he has been long in the Province and has improved land in the Township of Willoughby for which he never could provide Land board ticket and finds difficulty in proceeding in his improvement by the intervention of others. He prayed His Excellency to grant him any quantity of land and that enquiry and report may be made why he can’t be secured in his improvement. The Council ordered that he have a grant of two hundred acres and referred it to the Surveyor General. (Willoughby Township Papers 0232)

On 29 Sep 1796 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared a surveyor’s assignment for Henry Woods for 400 acres of land in Lots 7, 8, 9 and 10 Concession 3 Willoughby Twp. on reverse is written Order in Council 18 Aug 1795; Mr. Frys ticket 400 acres; total 600.
