Lawroway, Abraham

On 3 May 1791 the Land Board read the petition of Abram Lawroway (John Hill crossed out) for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith who on 10 Jul 1794 assigned to John Hill* two hundred acres in Lots 4 and 5 Concession 2 in the Township of No. 9. Marginal Note: This alteration in the name made at the Land Board Dec 14th 1793. Note of Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith: John Hill’s name was on Major Holland’s plan. These Lots are numbered 15 and 16 on the plan received from Samuel Holland Esquire. (Thorold Township Papers 0579)

On 4 Feb 1795 Abra Lawraway aged 39, born in York State, farmer appeared before John Small and took the prescribed oaths and was recommended for a grant of two hundred acres of land. On 6 Feb 1795 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith assigned to Abraham Larroway two hundred acres in Lots 14 and 102 Thorold Twp. Permission is hereby authorized Abraham Larroway to transfer to John Hill Lots No. 4 and 5 in the 9th Township as set for in this certificate. (Thorold Township Papers 0059)


Lawroway, Jonas

On 12 May 1792 the Land Board read the petition of James Lawroway for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor D. W. Smith who on 20 Sep 1794 assigned to him seventy acres in Lots 9 and 11 in the Township of No. 9. Added note of D. W. Smith: Personally appeared before me at the Sur. Gen. Office, John Wilson & Jacob Bowman who declared they had no claim to the above Lots & that the Entry made of their names must have been a mistake. Noted on the reverse: The Land Board authorise the transfer of the within Lotts from Jonas Lawroway to George Kefer—Newark Nov 5th 1793. (Thorold Township Papers 0041)

Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for Jonas Laroway transferred to George Kefer for 17 acres of land in Lot 11 Thorold Twp. (Thorold Township Papers 0037)

On 10 Feb 1795 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared a surveyor’s assignment for Jonas Lawraway for 138 acres of land in Lots 8, 9 and 11 Thorold Twp. and noted John Wilsons name appears by mistake on No. 9 in the plan and J. Bowman’s name appears by mistake on 11 on the plan. (Thorold Township Papers 0044)

Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for Jonas Lawroway transferred to George Kefer for 54 acres of land in Lot 9 Thorold Twp. (Thorold Township Papers 0039)


Lutz, John

On 4 Nov 1803 the Executive Council of Upper Canada gave a grant to John Lutz of Pelham Twp., yeoman for Lots 155 and 162 Thorold Twp. as per 22nd Claim Niagara Commission Apr 1803. (Thorold Township Papers 0364, 0366)


McAlwain, John

On 10 Jun 1795 John McAlwain aged 24, born in Pennsylvania State, farmer appeared before John Reilly, J. P. and took the prescribed oaths and was recommended for a grant of two hundred acres of land. On 24 Jun 1795 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith assigned to John Macklewain one hundred acres in Lot 164 Thorold Twp. Marginal note of D. W. Smith: Thomas Howey who was formerly entered for this Lot, personally appeared and said he had not claim thereto. (Thorold Township Papers 0385)


McKindlay, Robert

On 19 Jun 1803 William Dickson wrote stating if a description has issued to Robert McKindlay for 100 acres in Stamford and 80 in Niagara this was a mistake in the office on the report of the Commissioners as his claim was for 80 in Stamford, 100 in Niagara and allowed as such. Miller, George

On 9 Feb 1791 the Land Board read the petition of George Miller for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him two hundred acres in Lots 3 and 4 Concession 3 in the Township of No. 9. Marginal Note: These 2 Lots are No. 27 & 28 in Thorold. Note of R. Hamilton J. P. on the reverse: 23 Jun 1792 certifying that as agreed on between George Miller and George Bowman on purpose to settle all disputes between them to sever Lot No. 4 of the within mentioned in two equal parts by a line drawn through the middle length ways and that George Miller shall retain the east half of said Lot and George Bowman the west half thereof. Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for George Miller for 150 acres of land in Lots 27 and the east half of 28 formerly called No. 3 and half No. 4 in the Third Concession Thorold Twp. (Thorold Township Papers 0600)

On 5 Feb 1799 the Executive Council of Upper Canada gave a grant to George Miller for 200 acres in Lots 4 and 2 Concession 3 Thorold Twp. as per 11th Claim Niagara Commission Aug 1803. (Thorold Township Papers 0302)

On 8 Apr 1801 Hon. Robert Hamilton, J.P. declared that George Millar yeoman in Thorold appeared before him and declared that though he one time did ask for a location on Lot No. 152 in that township, yet understanding that John Howell was settled thereon, he located the lands grant him in the Township of Gainsborough abd relinquished all claim to the said Lot No. 152 in Thorold. Miller, Peter

On 17 Aug 1795 the Executive Council of Upper Canada read the petition of Peter Miller stating the petitioner to have been in the Province near 8 years and to have improved on fifty acres held by ticket from Mr. Frey. Lot No. 2 second Concession Ninth Township (Thorold) and praying to be confirmed thereon for an additional grant. Ordered that the same be granted if the Surveyor General has no objection and also a grant of 200 acres in addition to the 50 acres he possesses which are to cover Mr. Freys tickets and all other claims. On 20 Oct 1796 Andrew Hansel certified before surveyor Thomas Ridout that he gave up and quit claimed in favour of Peter Miller to 50 acres off the north end of Lots No. 12 and 13 in the Township of Thorold. (Thorold Township Papers 0053)


Misener, Leonard

Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for Leonard Misener for 300 acres of land in Lots 196, 197 and 180 Thorold Twp. with the Board`s Certificate for 5 lots. Added note: This man has more land in this Township. (Thorold Township Papers 0436)

On 2 Mar 1797 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared a surveyor’s assignment for Leonard Misener for 230 acres of land in Lots 210 and 198 Thorold Twp. with its broken front as per an Order in Council of 21 Jul 1796. Added note: This man has more land in this Township. (Thorold Township Papers 0441)

Note of Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith dated 19 Jul 1794 assigning to Leonard Misener Lots 197, 196 and 180 In the Township No. 9 on Chippawa Creek (Thorold Twp.) containing about 300 acres. (Thorold Township Papers 0443)


Misener, Peter

On 13 Sep 1794 the Land Board read the petition of Peter Misener for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found him qualified to receive land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith who assigned to him two hundred acres in Lots 179 and 195 in the Township of No. 9. (Thorold Township Papers 0438)

On 30 Oct 1796 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared a surveyor’s assignment for Peter Misener for 176 acres of land in Lot 195 Thorold Twp. and 44 acres in Lot 225 Stamford Twp. (Thorold Township Papers 0434)
