Sager/Seager, Frederick

On 10 Nov 1795 the Land Board read the petition of Frederick Seager, a late Ranger of fifty-two years of age, born in Albany, farmer for a grant of 200 acres of land and found him qualified to receive a lot. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to Seager 170 acres in Lot 14 Concession 1 and 30 acres in the rear part of Lot 24 front concession Bertie Township (Bertie Township Papers 0216)

Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for Frederick Seager for 172 acres of land in Lot 14 Concession 1 and broken front on Lake Erie Bertie Twp. (Bertie Township Papers 0214)

On 27 Jan 1796 John Warren wrote that Jacob Anguish has been possessed of Lot 14 in the third concession of the Township of Bertie for some years and did last summer agree with Frederick Garrison to have Lot 14 in the second concession in front of his said lot and has paid Garrison most part of the money agreed upon for said Lot. Garrison has sold said lot to Silas Carter who at the time he bought it did not know it had been sold before to Anguish. Jacob Anguish says that Frederick Garrison is likewise known by the name Frederick Seager (Bertie Township Papers 0411)

On 11 Dec 1800 Robert Gray, Solicitor General gave a grant to Frederick Sager of Gainsborough Twp., Lincoln Co. for 84 acres in Lot 34 Bertie Twp. at the rear of Point Abino as per an Order in Council of 13 Jul 1796. (Bertie Township Papers 0081)

On 3 May 1791 the Land Board read the petition of Asa Schooley for a grant of 200 acres of land in the Township No. Fort Erie (Bertie) and found him qualified to receive a lot. On 8 Apr 1825 Samuel Sherk wrote to Surveyor General Thomas Ridout that twenty-five years earlier he purchased of Azaliah Schooley Lots 34 and 35 Concession 1 from Lake Erie Bertie Twp. at which time settled on the lot and had since made great improvements. He was lately told that there was a strip of four chains and fifty links between Lot 35 and the town line. He requested permission to purchase the land. Signed Samuel Sherk. On 9 Mar 1795 Jehoiada Schooley, twenty-six years of age, born in Jersey State, farmer appeared before John Small and took the prescribed oaths and was recommended for a grant of 200 acres of land. On the same date Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith assigned to Schooley 200 acres in Lots 30 and 31 Concession 1 Bertie Twp (Bertie Township Papers 0261)

The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him 200 acres in Lots 10 and 11 Concession 7 from the Niagara River of Township No. Fort Erie Added note of the Surveyor General’s Office dated 9 Aug 1794: Thos Silverthorn having personally appeared before DW Smith & declared he had no claim to these Lots which on the plan in the Sur Gen Office are No. 7 and 22. On 13 Sep 1803 Acting Surveyors General Chewett and Ridout prepared a surveyor’s assignment for Aaron Skinner of Bertie Twp., yeoman for 150 acres of land in Lot 2 and broken fronts on Lake Erie in Bertie Twp. At the bottom is noted John Gustin original nominee (Bertie Township Papers 0121)

Skinner, Timothy

Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for Timothy Skinner, Vertie for 200 acres of land in Lot 32 in Front near Point Abino Bertie Twp. with Order in Council 10 Jul 1793 (Bertie Township Papers 0067)

Extract from the Order in Council dated at the Council Chamber, Navy Hall 10 Jul 1793. The Petition of Timothy Skinner for a grant of land of one hundred acres where therer is a small creek with permission to erect a grist mill. Ordered by the Executive Council that the same be granted (Bertie Township Papers 0069)

Small, James Edward

Order in Council 1 Jul 1819 that James Edward Small of York, gentleman shall receive a grant of Lot 5 Concession 12 Bertie Twp. as part of the land already ordered to him for his services in the Royal Navy during the late war. (Bertie Township Papers 0734)

Smith, Abraham

On 14 Jun 1794 the Land Board read the petition of Abraham Smith for a grant of 200 acres of land in the Township of Fort Erie (Bertie) and found him qualified to receive a lot. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to Smith 200 acres in Lot 6 Concessions 2 and 3 of the Township of Fort Erie. Note in the margin: “The Lott 6 in the third Concession was by mistake entered in the Map in Isaac Smiths Name but he has Relinquished hiss Claim to his Father before the Board who have together with the Broken Lands in front accordingly Granted this Lott to Abram Smith,” (Bertie Township Papers 0302)

On 14 Jun 1794, the Executive Council gave permission to Abraham Smith to transfer Lots 6 Concessions 2 and 3 Fort Erie Township together with the broken lands in front to Philip Bender (Bertie Township Papers 0304)

Speakman, Joseph

On 3 May 1791 the Land Board read the petition of Constantine O’Neil for a grant of 200 acres of land in the Township No. Fort Erie (Bertie) and found him qualified to receive a lot and is entitled to a further assignment of 100 acres for his son. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to O’Neil 100 acres in Lot 5 Concession 1 of Township No. Fort Erie. Added note of John Warren, J. P. dated on 22 Mar 1796 stated the late Joseph Speakman who had made a small improvement upon Lot number five in front of the Lot for which this assignment has been granted never did, either by himself or his late widow obtain any Land Board certificate for the Lot, he having removed to Detroit before the Land Board of the District of Nassau were formed or authorized to grant certificates. Springer, Benjamin

On 4 Nov 1794 the Executive Coundil read the petition of Benjamin Springer stating he has been attached to the British Government and requesting land for his family having a wife and three children. The Council ordered the petitioner a grant of two hundred acres. (Bertie Township Papers 0442)

Stanton, Grace

On 27 Jan 1789 Grace Stanton was ordered one lot of land by order of the Land Board. On the reverse Grace Stanton assigned over all her right of this ticket and made her mark on the document. (Bertie Township Papers 0168)

Stanton, Robert

On 12 Nov 1835 The Surveyor General gave a surveyor’s description to Robert Stanton for 1 acre of land in the water lot in front of part of Lot 3 on the Niagara River Bertie Twp. as per an order of Lieutenant Governor John Colborne dated 31 Oct 1835. (Bertie Township Papers 0463)

Stanton, William

On 9 Jul 1816 William Stanton wrote to Surveyor General Thomas Ridout stating in November 1815 His Excellency Gordon Drummond granted him permission to occupy fifty acres of land reserved by Government for military purposes in the vicinity of Fort Erie and directions were sent to the Commanding Engineer at Fort George to survey. The Engineer informed him that some directions were wanting from the Surveyor General’s Office. Stanton made choice of 50 acres on the lower boundary line of the Reserve next to Lot No. 1 on the front or water concession as being most out of the way of military operations. Stewart/Stuart, Robert

On 16 Aug 1794 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith assigned to Robert Stewart the front half of Lot 28 Concession 1 above Fort Erie with the Broken Front containing 210 acres. (Bertie Township Papers 0044)

On 21 Dec 1796 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared a surveyor’s assignment for Robert Stewart for 210 acres of land in Lot 28 Concession 1 Bertie Twp. with the broken front (Bertie Township Papers 0046)

On 22 Jun 1802 Robert Stuart appeared before Acting Surveyor General David William Smith and made oath that Lots 30 and 31 near Point Abino in Bertie Twp. contains a pond covering fifty acres of land which fifty acres were made up to John Egan in the rear of Lot 28 Concession 1. On 14 May 1804 lot descriptions were issued by H. Alcock J. P. and John Small to The Attorney General for the following claim under the report of the Niagara Commission in April and May 1803: Claim 38 as the front halves of Lot 30 and 31 in front upon Lake Erie, Township of Bertie to Robert Stuart. On 18 Aug 1804 Acting Surveyors General Chewett and Ridout prepared a surveyor’s assignment for Robert Stuart of Bertie Twp., yeoman for 150 acres of land in the front halves of Lots 30 and 31 Front Concession Bertie Twp. as per Claim 38 of the Niagara Commission dated in April and May 1803 and Attorney General approval dated 17 Aug 1804. Swayze, Isaac

On 6 May 1805 James Muirhead, Esquire a Commissioner for ascertaining the titles to land under oath declared that Caleb Swayze and John Smith took their affidavits before him as a Commissioner and were subscribing witnesses to a Power of Attorney from John Coppas to Isaac Swayze to receive a deed for Lot 13 Concession 6 of Bertie Twp. and also a power of Attorney to convey the same. On 1 Jun 1799 Jeremiah Tuttle wrote to Benjamin Hardison, Esq. sending him a power of attorney for two hundred acres of land and requesting he get of Mr. Smith a warrant for one hundred acres No. 19 in the second concession and leave them in the office for Tuttle to get a deed for the whole. Troup, Jacob

On 30 Apr 1828 Jacob Troup of Willoughby Twp. wrote to the Hon. Peter Robinson, Commissioner saying he was desirous to become the purchaser of Lots 6 and 7 Concession 5 Bertie Twp. a Clergy Glebe Reserve. He though his father-in-law now an old and infirm man resided on the adjoining lots and for the purpose of settling near him thought he wanted the above lots. (Bertie Township Papers 0505)
