Topham, Edward

On 10 Jun 1791 the Land Board read the petition of Edward Topham for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith who on 3 Aug 1794 assigned to him Lot 1 Concession 8 of Township No. 10 containing 100 acres and Lot No. 73 in the Township of No. 9 containing one hundred acres, the Land Board having certified that the said lot was assigned by petition from Andrew Cohoe to the said Topham by their consent. On 22 Oct 1803 the Executive Council of Upper Canada gave a grant to Edward of Thorold Twp., yeoman for Lot 173 Thorold Twp. as per Order in Council 7 Dec 1802. (Thorold Township Papers 0413)

Acting Surveyors General Chewett and Ridout prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for Edward Topham of Thorold Twp., yeoman for one hundred acres of land in Lot 173 Thorold Twp. Added note: Thomas Waters name was on the plan. (Thorold Township Papers 0406)


Turney, George

On 6 Jun 1803 William Dickson wrote to Acting Surveyor General Thomas Ridout, Esq. noting Mr. George Turney put into his hands the Land Board Certificate for Lot No. 1 in the Township of Thorold containing one hundred acres with the vacant land in the Gore in front supposed to contain between 20 and 30 acres. Mr. Jones’ assignment is subscribed thereto. Mr. Turney has reason to suppose means are taken to obtain this for some other person. (Thorold Township Papers 0003)

On 30 Apr 1803 the Executive Council of Upper Canada gave a grant to George Turney of Thorold Twp., yeoman for Lot 2 in the 1st Concession with its broken front otherwise Lots No. 2 and 5 Thorold Twp. as per 4th Claim Niagara Commission Aug 1803. (Thorold Township Papers 0006)

Turney, John (Lieut.)

On 9 Feb 1791 the Land Board read the petition of Lieut. John Turney for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him two hundred acres in Lot 2 Concession 1 in the Township of No. 9. Added note: On 11 Apr 1792 the Land Board noted Lieut. John Turney having this day petitioned the Land Board for leave to assign his right of the within lot to his son John Turney they hereby confirmed the transfer of said Lot 2 in 1st Concession of Township No. 9. Copy of a deposition and an Order in Council made on a deed to John Turney Junior for Lot 2 in the First Concession with broken front in the Township of Thorold: 20 May 1803 Thomas Dickson of Queenston appeared before H. Allcock, C. J. and made oath that John Turney Junior the within named grantee died some time previous to the year one thousand eight hundred. 17 June 1803 the above deposition read in Council whereupon the Board recommended that this deed should be impounded in the Council Office, the deed bearing date after the grantees death. On 10 Feb 1791 the Land Board read the petition of John Van Derbark for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him two hundred acres in Lots 7 and 8 Concession 7 in the Township of No. 9. (Thorold Township Papers 0276)

On 30 Aug 1794 the Land Board read the petition of John Vanderburgh for a grant of five hundred acres of family lands in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found he has received two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 as a Loyalist and he has settled on and improved the same and that he is entitled to a further assignment of five hundred acres The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith who assigned to him five hundred acres in Lots 141, 142, 143, 144 and 145 in the Township of No. 9. Marginal note: This man brought into the settlement in the year 1787 a wife & nine children—entitled to fifty acres each. (Thorold Township Papers 0278)

On 19 Jun 1803 William Dickson wrote requesting any lands to Andrew Ostrander in the Gore between Niagara and Stamford to Andrew Ostrander be withheld, as William Vanevery has a prior claim upon part of that land that is opposite to Edmund Horton and for which Edmund Horton has an order in Council for; but by said Horton’s consent this was relinquished about three years ago to Ostrander and VanEvery in Mr. Jones’ presence when he was running the lines, the deed to come out in Ostranders name, and Vaneverys part to be made over to him by Ostrander. This Ostrander under some pretext evades doing it whereupon it is necessary to bring the transaction before the Commissioners. (Thorold Township Papers 0586)
