Pell, Jonathan

On 17 Aug 1795 the petition of Jonathan Pell was read in the Executive Council of Upper Canada stating he was a Captain of Militia in New York during the War. He requested three thousand acres of land. He had 1500 acres of land in Nova Scotia but resigned them. The Council of Upper Canada ordered that he should have a grant of five hundred acres. On 25 Oct 1796 Deputy Surveyor General D W Smith gave a survey to Jonathan Pell for the south half of Lot 10 and Lots 11 and 12 Concession 3 Humberstone Twp. containing 500 acres with an allowance for roads for which 71-3/7 acres are reserved. (Humberstone Township Papers 0390)

Extract from the minutes of the Executive Council of Upper Canada dated at Newark on 27 Jun 1795: Joseph Pell’s petition for one thousand acres of land was read and he was ordered four hundred acres. (Humberstone Township Papers 0243)

Pell, Joshua

Extract from the minutes of the Executive Council of Upper Canada at the Council of Upper Canada Chamber, Navy Hall, County of Lincoln 17 Jan 1793. The Petition of Joshua Pell, an American Loyalist was read and he was recommended for provisions, clothing, family lands, implements of husbandry agreeably to his certificate signed by Mr. Moltz (Humberstone Township Papers 0247)

Extract from the minutes of the Executive Council of Upper Canada at the Council of Upper Canada Chamber, Newark 27 Jun 1795 the petition of Joshua Pell praying for an additional quantity of land was read. Ordered that he should have an additional quantity of five hundred acres to make up the seven hundred acres he has already received—twelve hundred acres. (Humberstone Township Papers 0249)

On 1 Feb 1813 Thomas Ridout, Surveyor General gave a survey of the lots to Joshua Pell the Elder of Stamford Twp. as per an Order in Council of Upper Canada of 4 Feb 1812. (Humberstone Township Papers 0387)

On 7 May 1820 Joshua Pell of Stamford Twp. sold to Edward Plant of Humberstone Twp. one half of the south end of Lot 8 Concession 3 Humberstone Twp. for five hundred dollars. In 1820 Plant was to erect and build on the saw lot a good log house 16 by 18 feet and clear five acres of land. In the second year he is to clear and finish five acres of land. In the third year Plant is to pay one hundred dollars and then Pell is to give a bond for a deed. In the fourth year Plant is to pay Pell another one hundred dollars followed by one hundred dollars in the fifth, sixth and seventh years. Signed by Joshua Pell. Edward Plant made his mark. Witnessed by Joseph Pell and Jacob Weaver. Added note: Joshua Pell will be willing to take the payments of the within sums in wheat or any other articles at cash price. In an undated note from Edward Plant to Joshua Pell, Plant requested that Joel Whitney have the lot of land that he had. Philip Mackoy agreed to take on the agreement with Pell. (Humberstone Township Papers 0384)
