Ball, Jacob Sr.

On 24 Sep 1804 the John Small, Secretary of Executive Council Office wrote to the Surveyor General in reply to his letter of the 23rd ultimo wherein he requested to be informed if Jacob Ball, Senior has made application to locate Lot No. 17 in Thorold as directed under the Niagara Commission in the present year. Small stated that no such application has yet been made at this office. (Thorold Township Papers 0068)

Locations made in the Surveyor Generals Office 23 Apr 1805 by persons paying the whole of the Patent Fess & Survey under the Regulations of the 9th January 1804 subject to the Table of Fees of the 6 July 1804—Lot No. 17 in the Township of Thorold was claimed by Jacob Ball Senior, under the Niagara Commission in 1804 which directed him to apply for leave to make the location, he accordingly applied by petition to His Excellency the Lieut. Governor on the 26th January 1805 when the following order was made thereon—“The Prayer of the Petition of Jacob Ball cannot be complied with as it appears that he has already received Two Hundred and sixty five acres more than he was entitled to as a reduced Lieutenant—(signed) “P. Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for Jacob Ball Junr. for two hundred acres of land in Lots 6 and 7 Thorold Twp. (Thorold Township Papers 0013)

Ball, Jacob Augustus

On 22 Jan 1853 Jacob Augustus Ball of Grantham Twp. made an affidavit that he is lawfully possessed of Lot Number 24 in the Township of Thorold under the will of the late Jacob H. Ball this deponent’s father deceased who was possessed under a deed in fee and that the whole of said Lot number 24 is now in the actual possession of this deponent and his father was in possession under a deed since 21 Oct 1815. This is accompanied by a map and description of the lot. (Thorold Township Papers 0083, 0084, 0085)

Ball, Jacob H.

On 22 Jan 1853 Jacob Augustus Ball of Grantham Twp. made an affidavit that he is lawfully possessed of Lot Number 24 in the Township of Thorold under the will of the late Jacob H. Bouck, Christian

On 2 Feb 1795 Christian Bouck aged 21, born in Albany County, York State, farmer appeared before John Small and took the prescribed oaths and was recommended for a grant of two hundred acres of land. On 2 Feb 1795 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith assigned to him two hundred acres in Lots 150 and 151 Thorold Twp. (Thorold Township Papers 0347)

Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for Christian Bouck for two hundred acres of land in Lots 150 and 151 Thorold Twp. (Thorold Township Papers 0345)


Boughner, Peter

On 1 Mar 1826 Samuel Ridout wrote for the Surveyor General to let a description issue to Peter Boughner for Lot No. 152 in the Township of Thorold as claimed under the Niagara Commission in 1804—John Howell original name—Mr. Hamilton having surrendered 100 acres in lieu of John Howell’s land agreeably to the Commission report. Bowman, George

On 9 Feb 1791 the Land Board read the petition of George Miller for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him two hundred acres in Lots 3 and 4 Concession 3 in the Township of No. 9. Marginal Note: These 2 Lots are No. 27 & 28 in Thorold. Note of R. Hamilton J. P. on the reverse: 23 Jun 1792 certifying that as agreed on between George Miller and George Bowman on purpose to settle all disputes between them to sever Lot No. 4 of the within mentioned in two equal parts by a line drawn through the middle length ways and that George Miller shall retain the east half of said Lot and George Bowman the west half thereof. Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for George Bowman for 400 acres of land in Lots 29, 30, 31 and 32 Thorold Twp. (Thorold Township Papers 0103)

On 25 Apr 1797 Jacob Bowman swore before Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith J. P. that he had no claim to Lot No. 19 and broken front in Thorold and that he never received a certificate for it, that he gave over his […..] to his father George Bowman. Jacob Bowman made his mark. On 14 Nov 1801 Ralf Clenche wrote Mr. George Bowman an old German farmer of the Township of Thorold has been over at York about his deeds and lands which from his ignorance he has found some difficulty. He has obtained a certificate from Mr. R. Hamilton and requests me to let you know that he settled in 1787, has a fine farm, is a good industrious old man and would be a loss to any country. Bowman, Jacob

On 12 May 1792 the Land Board read the petition of James Lawroway for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor D. W. Smith who on 20 Sep 1794 assigned to him seventy acres in Lots 9 and 11 in the Township of No. 9. Added note of D. W. Smith: Personally appeared before me at the Sur. Gen. Office, John Wilson & Jacob Bowman who declared they had no claim to the above Lots & that the Entry made of their names must have been a mistake. Noted on the reverse: The Land Board authorise the transfer of the within Lotts from Jonas Lawroway to George Kefer—Newark Nov 5th 1793. (Thorold Township Papers 0203)

On 10 Feb 1795 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared a surveyor’s assignment for Jonas Lawraway for 138 acres of land in Lots 8, 9 and 11 Thorold Twp. and noted John Wilsons name appears by mistake on No. 9 in the plan and J. Bowman’s name appears by mistake on 11 on the plan. (Thorold Township Papers 0044)

Brown, Agnes

On 14 Oct 1796 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for Agnes Brown in right of her late husband John Brown who served in the 60th Regt. for 165 acres of land in part of Lots 259 and 260 and two broken pieces adjoining to these lots on the River in Thorold Twp. and 135 acres in the front part of Lot 1 Concession 14 Pelham Twp. Brown, Daniel S.

On 2 Jan 1834 Daniel S. Brown wrote to S. P. Hurd Esqr. stating he made a purchase of a piece of land in Thorold being the northeast angle of the Lot No. 17 and asked if the usual road allowance is granted on the south end of Lot 16 now in the property of G. Keefer Esq. Signed Daniel S. Brown. (Thorold Township Papers 0074)


Brown, John

On 9 Feb 1791 the Land Board read the petition of John Brown for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him two hundred acres in Lots 22 and 23 Concession 1 in the Township of No. 9. (Thorold Township Papers 0571)

Burgess, James

On 14 Oct 1796 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for James “Burges” for 100 acres in Lot 257 and 125 acres of land in part of Lots 260 and 259 and part of the broken front adjoining them in Thorold Twp. (Thorold Township Papers 0554)
