Carl, John

On 3 May 1791 the Land Board read the petition of John Carl for a grant of 200 acres of land in the Township of Fort Erie (Bertie) and found him qualified to receive a lot. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to Carl 40 acres in Lot 2 First Cross Concession of Township No. 1 Fort Erie. (Bertie Township Papers 0002).

On 2 May 1797 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared a surveyor’s assignment for John Carl for 40 acres of land in Lot 2 First Cross Concession Bertie Twp. nearly opposite to a small island above Grand Island on the Niagara River (Bertie Township Papers 0005)

Carney, Hill and Edward

On 10 Jul 1794 the Executive Council read the petition of Hill Carney and Edward Carney setting forth their Loyalty which was proven to the satisfaction of the Board and that having removed with their families to this province prays for an allotment of land to improve upon. The Council ordered that the same be granted, place to be specified. (Bertie Township Papers 0665)

On 8 Aug 1796 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for Hill Carney and Edward Carney for 400 acres of land in Lots 12, 13 and 14 Concession 8 from the Niagara River and Lot 13 Concession 3 from Lake Erie Bertie Twp. (Bertie Township Papers 0663)

On 8 May 1795 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared a surveyor’s assignment for Hill Carney and Edward Carney for 300 acres of land in Lots 12, 13 and 14 Concession 8 from the Niagara River (Bertie Township Papers 0666)

Carter, Silas

On 3 May 1791 the Land Board read the petition of Silas Carter for a grant of 200 acres of land in the Township No 2 (Bertie Twp.) and found him qualified to receive a lot. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to Carl 200 acres in Lot 13 Concessions 1 and 2 of Township No. (Bertie Township Papers 0210)

Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for Silas Carter for 250 acres of land in Lot 13 Concessions 1 and 2 Bertie Twp. with the broken front (Bertie Township Papers 0212)

On 27 Jan 1796 John Warren wrote that Jacob Anguish has been possessed of Lot 14 in the third concession of the Township of Bertie for some years and did last summer agree with Frederick Garrison to have Lot 14 in the second concession in front of his said lot and has paid Garrison most part of the money agreed upon for said Lot. Garrison has sold said lot to Silas Carter who at the time he bought it did not know it had been sold before to Anguish. Jacob Anguish says that Frederick Garrison is likewise known by the name Frederick Seager (Bertie Township Papers 0411)

On 4 Aug 1818 John Baxter wrote to Surveyor General Thomas Ridout informing him of a dispute between himself and Silas Carter. Baxter lived on Lot 12 on the Lake and purchased from John Chambers in the year 1799. The stake between Lots 12 and 13 in front was gone. When he came here to live there was was a road claim and work by the public and a crossway marked and in making it was careful to stake out the line in order to keep the crossway on the east side of the line and the trees were cut away for the purpose of ditching. Mr. Carter employed Burwell to survey one hundred and fifty acres of the rear of his farm which he sold to Mr. Douglass. In the year 1814 Mr. Carter began to dispute the crossway and said it was on his land. Baxter then employed the late Capt. George Lawe to ascertain the line and found it corresponded with Col. Burwell’s stakes and the original marks in the rear…. (Bertie Township Papers 0205)

Chambers, John

On 15 Oct 1795 John Small examined John Chambers, aged 25, born in Philadelphia, carpenter and recommended him for a grant of 200 acres of and found him qualified to receive a lot. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith who assigned to Chambers 100 acres in Lot 13 Concession 3 of Bertie Township Noted at the bottom: and for 31 2nd Con Bertie. On 8 Aug 1796 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared a surveyor’s assignment for John Chambers for 200 acres of land in Lot 13 Concession 3 and Lot 31 Concession 2 from Lake Erie Bertie Twp. (Bertie Township Papers 0407)

On 30 Aug 1804 the Executive Council of Upper Canada gave a grant to John Chambers of Ancaster Twp. for Lot 12 Concessions 1 and 2 Bertie Twp. (Bertie Township Papers 0203)

Chambers, Patrick

On 3 May 1791 the Land Board read the petition of Patrick Chambers for a grant of 200 acres of land in the Township No 2 and found him qualified to receive a lot. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to Chambers 200 acres in Lot 12 Concessions 1 and 2 of Township No. (Bertie Township Papers 0196)

On 30 Oct 1796 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared a surveyor’s assignment for Patrick Chambers for 220 acres of land in Lot 12 Concessions 1 and 2 Bertie Twp. (Bertie Township Papers 0194)

On 4 Feb 1804 Peter Russell wrote Patrick Chambers deed is in the Secretary’s Office but rendered void by the death of the grantee having happened (as reported) before the date of patent. (Bertie Township Papers 0198)

On 4 Feb 1807 Acting Surveyors General Chewet and Ridout wrote that Lot 12 in the broken front, Concessions 1 and 2 containing 220 acres under a Land Board Certificate have been described to Patrick Chambers. John Baxter has been entered for the north half of Lot 13 in the 5th Concession of Charlotteville. He is also entered in Bertie for Lot 13 in the 2nd Bertie ande for 60 acres of the west side of Lot 4 in the 9th Concession of Bertie making in all 260 acres. A warrant of the 12th October 1796 has been lodged for 200 to the said John Baster but stayed for payment of survey. (Bertie Township Papers 0199)

Coppas, John

On 6 May 1805 James Muirhead, Esquire a Commissioner for ascertaining the titles to land under oath declared that Caleb Swayze and John Smith took their affidavits before him as a Commissioner and were subscribing witnesses to a Power of Attorney from John Coppas to Isaac Swayze to receive a deed for Lot 13 Concession 6 of Bertie Twp. and also a power of Attorney to convey the same. On 9 May 1805 Acting Surveyors General Chewett and Ridout prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for Isaac Swayze for 100 acres of land in Lot 13 Concession 6 from the Niagara River Bertie Twp. as per the 18th Claim Niagara Commission 1804. Crane, Jacob

On 3 May 1791 the Land Board read the petition of Joseph Ransier for a grant of 200 acres of land in the Township No 2 (Bertie) and found him qualified to receive a lot. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to Ransier 200 acres in Lots 22 and 23 Concession 1 of Township No. . On the reverse is a notation that David Tuttle the bearer says Crane expects the deed to come to Pound of Bertie, yeoman to whom the land board have transferred it from Ransier. A note below this signed by Daniel Pound and witnessed by John Peer and Daniel Alward transferred his right and title to Jacob Crane. (Bertie Township Papers 0242, 0247, 0250)

Crane, James

On 6 Dec 1803 the Executive Council of Upper Canada gave a grant to James Crane of Bertie Twp., yeoman for land in Lot 5 Concession 2 Bertie Twp. with the broken front. (Bertie Township Papers 0298)

Creagor, Peter

On 27 May 1796 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared a surveyor’s assignment for Peter Cregors for 200 acres of land in Lots 4 and 5 Concession 7 from the Niagara River Bertie Twp. as per 59th Claim Niagara Commission 1803 (Bertie Township Papers 0607)

Crookshanks, Patrick

Dennis, Obadiah and Nathaniel

On 3 May 1797 Obadiah Dennis certified that he had no claim to Lot 8 Concession 5 Bertie and never receive any certificate for the same. Obadiah Dennis made his mark and witnessed by Nathaniel Dennis. (Bertie Township Papers 0513)

In Jun 1807, the Heir and Devisees Commission decided in favour of Obadiah Dennis of Bertie Twp., farmer as eldest son and heir at law of the late Ezekiel Dennis of the same place, deceased for the front of Lots 33 and 34 Bertie Twp. on Point Abino on Lake Erie containing 200 acres. The Commission allowed the lands to the claimant together with his brother Nathaniel Dennis according to the uses of the will of Ezekiel Dennis dated 26 Feb 1797 (Bertie Township Papers 0051)

On 4 Dec 1807 Acting Surveyors General Chewett and Ridout ordered a description issued to Obadiah Dennis for the lands claimed under the 5th claim of the Commission Report in Mar 1807 being the front of Lots 33 and 34 on Point Abino containing 250 acres, Ezekiel Dennis being the original nominee. On 10 Dec 1807 Attorney General William Firth ordered a grant to Obadiah Dennis of Bertie Twp., yeoman as eldest son and heir at law of the late Ezekiel Dennis deceased for the front of Lots 33 and 34 on Point Abino Bertie Twp. (Bertie Township Papers 0055)

On 12 Mar 1808 Attorney General William Firth gave a fiat to Obadiah and Nathaniel Dennis for 200 acres of land in Lots 33 and 34 Bertie Twp. on Point Abino (Bertie Township Papers 0077)
