Addison, Robert (Rev.)

On 19 Mar 1797 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared a surveyor’s assignment for Rev. Robert Addison for 54 acres of land in two parcels. The first commencing at the northwest angle of lands granted to Mr. Secord Sr. at the distance of 8 chains and 40 links from Lake Ontario. The other commencing at a post on the 4 Mile Creek. On 10 Jul 1801 the Executive Council of Upper Canada gave a grant to Rev. Robert Addison of Niagara Twp., Clerk for 200 Lots 72 and 73 Concession 4 Newark (Niagara) Twp. as per 11th Claim Niagara Commission Aug 1803. (Niagara Township Papers 0026)

Added note: These lands were located before the division of the Province to Aaron Bradt, from whom Mr. Addison obtained them—a description was sent for Bradt No. 4601 which the Attorney General will be pleased to remit. Baker, William

On 24 Mar 1790 the Land Board read the petition of William Baker for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 1 (Niagara) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who on 28 Mar 1790 assigned to him two hundred acres in Lots 16 and 31 in the Township of No. 1. (Niagara Township Papers 0118)

Ball, Jacob

Baxter, David

On 12 Apr 1794 the Land Board read the petition of David Baxter for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 1 (Niagara) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him one hundred acres in Lot 27 in the Township of No. 1. (Niagara Township Papers 0161)

Beaty, David

On 9 Aug 1794 the Land Board granted Lots 63 and 64 Newark (Niagara) Twp. to John McFarland as assignee of David Beaty. (Niagara Township Papers 0306)

On 15 Jan 1799 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared a surveyor’s assignment for David Beaty for two hundred acres of land in Lots 60 and 64 Newark (Niagara) Twp. Added note: The Land Board certified that McFarland had a regular assignment from Beaty for his lands. McFarland expects the deed in his name. (Niagara Township Papers 0308)


Bellinger, Philip

On 7 May 1792 the Land Board read the petition of Andrew Heron for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 1 (Niagara) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him 150 acres in Lots 66 and 67 in the Township of No. 1. Added note: The west end of Lot No. 67 was sold and is the property of Philip Bellinger. Marginal note: Newark—150 Beverly—50 Total—200. (Niagara Township Papers 0310)

On 4 May 1799 Andrew Heron filed a claim on the east half of Lot No. 67 in the Township of Newark only—the other half of the Lot is claimed by Philip Bellinger. Singed Andrew Heron. Added note: Mem. Mr. Heron asking 60 acres ½ Lot No. 33 10 Con Beverly Township. (Niagara Township Papers 0314)


Bennett, James

In a letter of 6 Oct 1808 from the Lieutenant Governor’s Office to Surveyors General Chewett and Ridout a description of the Lot No. 129 in the Township of Niagara was requested for a license of occupation to James Bennett of the said Township. (Niagara Township Papers 0519)

Boice, John Sr.

On 21 Jun 1794 the Land Board read the petition of John Boice Senr. for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 1 (Niagara) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith who assigned to him two hundred acres in Lots 157 and 158 in the Township of No. 1. Note of Robert Hamilton in the margin: a reduced Ranger from Capt. Butler’s Corps. (Niagara Township Papers 0622)

Bowville, Peter

On 2 Aug 1794 the Land Board read the petition of Peter Bowville for a grant of one hundred acres of land in Township No. 1 (Niagara) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. Bradt, Aron

Bradt, Minor

On 13 Jan 1807 the Executive Council of Upper Canada read the petition of Minor Bradt and Andrew Cameron stating that Minor Bradt for a valuable consideration gave a lien to Andrew Cameron upon Lot No. 120 in the Township of Niagara to which he was entitled by purchase. The claim being brought before the Committee for ascertaining titles to lands they did award that the said lien held by Andrew Cameron should be considered as a mortgage upon it. Having disposed of the said lot of land in order to discharge the said claim and for the support of himself and family, prays that the patent may be issued for the same. Upon considering the certificate of James Muirhead Esq., one of the Commissioners for ascertaining title to lands for the District of Niagara at their sittings 28 May 1803, it appears to the Committee that it was the intention of the said Commissioners that a deed should issue to the petitioner Minor Bradt for Lot 120 in the Township of Niagara when a certain mortgage should be paid to one Andrew Cameron by him. The Committee therefore recommended that a deed should issue to Minor Bradt. (Niagara Township Papers 0487)

On 22 Jan 1809 the Executive Council of Upper Canada gave a grant to Minor Bradt of Niagara Twp., yeoman for Lot 120 Niagara Twp. as per an Order in Council dated 13 Jan 1807 and Claim of the Niagara Commission in 1803. (Niagara Township Papers 0302)


Bradt, Roger

On 28 Jun 1790 the Land Board read the petition of Roger Bradt for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 1 (Niagara) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him one hundred acres in Lot 71 in the Township of No. 1. Note of the Land Board dated 18 Apr 1792 on the reverse: The bearer Roger Bradt having petitioned the Board for leave to dispose of the within named Lot No. 71 to John Cochell, the Board authorize the sale and direct that the Lot No. 71 be transferred to the said John Cochell. Further note of the Land Board dated 14 Dec 1793: The bearer John Cochell having petitioned this Board for leave to dispose of the within named Lot No. 71 to Thomas Butler, the Board authorize the sale and direct that the aforesaid Lot be transferred to Thomas Butler. Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for Roger Bradt for one hundred acres of land in Lot 71 Newark (Niagara) Twp. (Niagara Township Papers 0329)

Unidentified note of query and answer: A description for patent issued in March 1795 in the name of Roger Bradt for Lot No. 71 in the Township of Niagara. The same lot was described again likewise in the name of Roger Bradt 26 Dec 1805. No trace can be found that a patent was ever completed upon the description issued in Mar 1795 but that issued in Dec 1805 for the lot in question to R. Bradt appears to have been acted upon and the patent bears date 27th Dec of that year. (Niagara Township Papers 0333)

On 26 Dec 1805 William Jarvis, Secretary of the Executive Council wrote to Surveyor General Thomas Ridout to say he had a deed in his office to Roger Bradt for 100 acres in the Township of Newark (now Niagara) composed of Lot 71. This deed is signed by Lt. Gov. Simcoe and has date 1st Jan 1794. The seal of the Province has never been affixed to this deed nor does it contain the specification for the Clergy Reserves. On 26 Dec 1805 Surveyor General Thomas Ridout wrote that the name of Roger Bradt is returned on the Quebec plan of Newark (now Niagara) Township for Lot number seventy-one containing one hundred acres, and in the year 1795 a description issued this office in the name of the said Roger Bradt for the said Lot upon a certificate assigned by Augustus Jones, late Deputy Surveyor. On 26 Dec 1805 Roger Bradt of the Township of Louth appeared before William Allan, Esq, a Justice of the Peace for the Home District, saying he has made diligent search in the Land Granting Office for a Land Board Certificate in his name for Lot Number seventy-one in the Township of Niagara containing one hundred acres and that the said certificate cannot be found. On 6 Feb 1806 Attorney General Thomas Scott wrote he has discovered amongst the late Attorney General’s papers, a Land Board certificate to Roger Bradt for one hundred acres of land in the Township Number 1. There is also at the bottom of that certificate an assignment to him of Lot 71 in the said Township. Both the certificate and the assignment bear date the 28th of Jun 1790. In April 1792 Bradt petitioned the Land Board for leave to dispose of the above mentioned land to John Cochell. Leave was granted accordingly. In December 1793 received a like authority to transfer the said lot to Thomas Butler from the Land Board. (Niagara Township Papers 0341)


Brown, Joseph

On 29 Mar 1790 the Land Board read the petition of Michael Showers for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 1 (Niagara) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who on 22 Nov 1790 assigned to him 150 acres in Lots 13 and 14 together with the Broken Land in the Front in the Township of No. 1. Added note of the Land Board dated 12 Apr 1794: The Land Board authorize Michael Showers to transfer to Joseph Brown the lots of land as set forth in this certificate. On 29 Mar 1790 the Land Board read the petition of Joseph Brown for a grant of one hundred acres of land in Township No. 1 (Niagara) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who on 22 Nov 1790 assigned to him one hundred acres in Lot 84 in the Township of No. 1. (Niagara Township Papers 0378)

Butler, Thomas

On 28 Jun 1790 the Land Board read the petition of Roger Bradt for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 1 (Niagara) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him one hundred acres in Lot 71 in the Township of No. 1.
