Gregor, James

On 29 Dec 1792 the Land Board read the petition of James Gregor for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him two hundred acres in front in the Township of No. Chippeway with a small quantity of broken land. Added note: No. 199 & 200 9th Township or Thorold. (Thorold Township Papers 0467)


Hagar, Jonathan

On 12 Mar 1792 the Land Board read the petition of George Knavenshe for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him two hundred acres in Lots 20 and 21 Concession 6 in the Township of No. 9. Added note of the Land Board dated 7 Jun 1794: The present possessor George Knavenshan has permission from the Board agreeable to the prayer to transfer Lots No. 20 and 21 in the 6th Concession 9th Township to Jonathan Hagar. Hamilton, Robert (Hon.)

On 9 Jun 1802 the Executive Council of Upper Canada gave a grant to Hon. Robert Hamilton of The Town of Niagara, yeoman for two hundred acres in Lots 181 and 182 Thorold Twp. (Thorold Township Papers 0431)

On 30 Jun 1803 the Executive Council of Upper Canada gave a grant to The Honorable Robert Hamilton of Queenstown, Esquire for Lot 190 Thorold Twp. as per 13th Claim Niagara Commission 1803. (Thorold Township Papers 0454)


Hanselaer, Andrew

On 26 Nov 1794 George Hartsell aged 46, born in Germaine Town, carpenter appeared before John Small and took the prescribed oaths and was recommended for a grant of two hundred acres of land. On the same date Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith assigned to him two hundred acres in Lots 175 and 176 Thorold Twp. (Thorold Township Papers 0425)

On 12 Apr 1794 the Land Board read the petition of Andrew Hanselaer for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith who on 28 Apr 1794 assigned to him two hundred acres in Lots 12 and 13 in the Township of No. 9. (Thorold Township Papers 0055)

On 20 Oct 1796 Andrew Hansel certified before surveyor Thomas Ridout that he gave up and quit claimed in favour of Peter Miller to 50 acres off the north end of Lots No. 12 and 13 in the township of Thorold. (Thorold Township Papers 0053)

On 19 Jun 1803 William Dickson wrote regarding a grant for Andrew Hanslaer for Lots 12 and 13 formerly 1 and 2 Concession 2 Thorold. In referring to this grant Dickson found the name George Hanslaer to be therein inserted and presumed this is a mistake. He transmitted a search agreeable to the entry. Hartsell, George

On 29 Mar 1794 the Land Board read the petition of George Hartsell for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith who on 14 May 1795 assigned to him two hundred acres in Lots 177 and 174 in the Township of Thorold. (Thorold Township Papers 0419)

Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for George Hartsell for 400 acres of land in Lots 174, 175 and 176 Thorold Twp. (Thorold Township Papers 0423)


Henry, Robert

On 2 Jul 1828 John Crooks wrote to Honorable Peter Robinson saying a person of the name of Robert Henry who for many years was a soldier, now lives on Lot Number 100, Seventh Concession of Thorold containing 100 acres which is a Clergy Reserve. He wishes to purchase it, having in the lifetime of the late Isaac Swazie purchased from him his right of occupancy. (Thorold Township Papers 0624)


Heron, Andrew

Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for Andrew Heron for two hundred acres of land in Lots 20 and 33 Thorold Twp. with a small broken lot to the northward of No. 20 adjoining to and southwardly of the Township Line (Thorold Township Papers 0012)

Hill, John Sr.

On 17 Nov 1806 Ralfe Clench, Clerk of the Peace for the District of Niagara certified that Mr. George Keefer claimed the within named land before the Commissioners for Ascertaining Titles to Land. It appears that this claim was withdrawn as well as a claim of Elizabeth Herons, a devisee and Executrix of the late deceased John Hill Sen. for the other half of said lot of land. Hill, John Jr.

On 12 Mar 1793 the Land Board read the petition of John Hill Junior for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him two hundred acres in Lot 5 in the 2nd Concession Township of No. 9. Added note of Acting Surveyors General Chewett and Ridout: This is the property called the broken Lot No. eight in the Township of Thorold. It is understood that the western moiety of this Lot by agreement of the parties is to be the property of George Keefer. Added survey map showing the division between Hill and Keefer. On 3 May 1791 the Land Board read the petition of Abram Lawroway (John Hill crossed out) for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith who on 10 Jul 1794 assigned to John Hill* two hundred acres in Lots 4 and 5 Concession 2 in the Township of No. 9. Marginal Note: This alteration in the name made at the Land Board Dec 14th 1793. Note of Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith: John Hill’s name was on Major Holland’s plan. These Lots are numbered 15 and 16 on the plan received from Samuel Holland Esquire. Added note of the Land Board: Permission is hereby authorized Abraham Larroway to transfer to John Hill Lots No. 4 and 5 in the 9th Township as set for in this certificate. On 7 Nov 1806 Acting Surveyor General Thomas Ridout wrote to Solicitor General D’Arcy Boulton, Esq. stating the bearer George Keefer is desirous to obtain a patent for the west half of Lot No. 8 in Thorold containing 31 acres and a half, and also a deed for the east half of the same lot containing the same quantity in the name of John Hill Junr. The description (No. 1718) passed this office ten years ago and there is reason to believe it is now in your office. (Thorold Township Papers 0024)

On 23 Feb 1809 the Executive Council of Upper Canada ordered a deed issued to John Hill of the Township of Thorold for the east half of Lot eight in the Gore (otherwise called number five in the second concession of the Township of Thorold. (Thorold Township Papers 0030)

On 24 Feb 1809 John Hill paid into the Office of P. Selby, Acting Receiver General two pounds ten shillings and two pence for the patent fee on 31 acres and a half in the east half of Lot 8 in Thorold Twp. and George Keefer also paid two pounds ten shillings and two pence for the patent fee on 31 and a half acres for the west half of the same lot. Hodgekison, John

On 10 Feb 1791 the Land Board read the petition of John Hodgekison for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him two hundred acres in Lots 14 and 15 Concession 3 in the Township of No. 9. Note on the reverse: The Land Board consent to the transfer of the within Lotts from John Hodgekison to Isaac Sweezy (Thorold Township Papers 0112, 0113)

On 1 May 1797, Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared a surveyor’s assignment for John Hodgekison transferred to Isaac Sweezy by the Land Board Lots 37 and 38 with their broken fronts being the 14 and 15 Lots from the Township’s east boundary Thorold. (Thorold Township Papers 0110)


Hoover, George

On 3 May 1791 the Land Board read the petition of George Hoover for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him two hundred acres in Lots 15 and 16 Concession 7 in the Township of No. 9. Marginal note: No. 126 & 127 Thorold. Hopkins, Ephraim

On 13 Jan 1795 Ephraim Hopkins aged 19, born in Sussex County, Jersey, farmer appeared before John Small and took the prescribed oaths and was recommended for a grant of two hundred acres of land. On 3 Jan 1795 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith assigned to him two hundred acres in Lots 148 and 149 Thorold Twp. (Thorold Township Papers 0342)

Hopkins, Obadiah

On 2 Jan 1795 Obadiah Hopkins aged 27, born in Jersey State, farmer appeared before John Small and took the prescribed oaths and was recommended for a grant of two hundred acres of land. On 3 Jan 1795 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith assigned to him two hundred acres in Lots 146 and 147 Thorold Twp. (Thorold Township Papers 0337)

Horton, Edmund

On 19 Jun 1803 William Dickson wrote requesting any lands to Andrew Ostrander in the Gore between Niagara and Stamford to Andrew Ostrander be withheld, as William Vanevery has a prior claim upon part of that land that is opposite to Edmund Horton and for which Edmund Horton has an order in Council for; but by said Horton’s consent this was relinquished about three years ago to Ostrander and VanEvery in Mr. Jones’ presence when he was running the lines, the deed to come out in Ostranders name, and Vaneverys part to be made over to him by Ostrander. This Ostrander under some pretext evades doing it whereupon it is necessary to bring the transaction before the Commissioners. (Thorold Township Papers 0586)


Howell, John

On 19 Mar 1801 Hon. Robert Hamilton, J. P. wrote to Acting Surveyor General Hon. D. W. Smith asking whose name stands on Lot 152 in Thorold. John Howell has improved this lot by the labour of seven years and has now apprehensions that his name has been by mistake put on some other lot. Henry Damwood has the lot to the west, George Miller to the east of the lot enquired after. (Thorold Township Papers 0353)

On 8 Apr 1801 Hon. Robert Hamilton wrote to Hon. D. W. Smith, Surveyor General asking to secure to Howell Lot 152 Thorold, he having a Magistrate’s recommendation which he says was lodged with Smith by D. Seacord Esq. “It will bring comfort to a poor man who now with a large family is much conserned lest he should lose the fruits of seven years of Industry.” (Thorold Township Papers 0350)

On 8 Apr 1801 Hon. Robert Hamilton, J.P. declared that George Millar yeoman in Thorold appeared before him and declared that though he one time did ask for a location on Lot No. 152 in that township, yet understanding that John Howell was settled thereon, he located the lands grant him in the Township of Gainsborough abd relinquished all claim to the said Lot No. 152 in Thorold. George Miller made his mark. (Thorold Township Papers 0351)

On 1 Mar 1826 Samuel Ridout wrote for the Surveyor General to let a description issue to Peter Boughner for Lot No. 152 in the Township of Thorold as claimed under the Niagara Commission in 1804—John Howell original name—Mr. Hamilton having surrendered 100 acres in lieu of John Howell’s land agreeably to the Commission report. Howey, Thomas

On 10 Jun 1795 John McAlwain aged 24, born in Pennsylvania State, farmer appeared before John Reilly, J. P. and took the prescribed oaths and was recommended for a grant of two hundred acres of land. On 24 Jun 1795 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith assigned to John Macklewain one hundred acres in Lot 164 Thorold Twp. Marginal note of D. W. Smith: Thomas Howey who was formerly entered for this Lot, personally appeared and said he had not claim thereto. (Thorold Township Papers 0385)
