Ball, George

On 18 Jan 1791 the Land Board read the petition of George Ball for a grant of 200 acres of land in the Township No. 3 (Grantham) and found him qualified for a grant of 200 acres. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him two hundred acres in Lots 12 and 13 Concession 10 in the Township of No. 3. (Grantham Township Papers 0791)


Ball, Jacob

On 14 Jun 1794 The Executive Council noted according to order the Acting Surveyor General produced a Report of Survey which being read the Council approve thereof and direct it to be carried into execution and form the boundaries suggested in the sketch this appears to be for Mr. Jacob Ball and his sons, rather less than one thousand acres. Added note of Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith dated 18 Oct 1794: Pursuant to an Order of Council, I assign to Jacob Ball Esquire and sons, a certain lot of land in the Township of Newark beginning at a post marked… (long description of the boundaries of the lot). On 19 May 1804 George Ball wrote to Acting Surveyor General Thomas Ridout Esq. stating his father would be glad to know whether his grants for Lots No. 6, 7, 10, 11, 14 and 15 in the 10th Concession of Grantham and one lot in Thorold. He believed it is Lot No. 17 in the second Concession. John Wilson was formerly on the map for that lot but he appeared before Mr. Smith and declared that he had no claim to the lot, which declaration you will find recorded on one of the books in the office. If the descriptions for these lots are not made out and no power order lodged in the Surveyor General’s office to make them out, Ball’s father wishes to have searches for these lots from the office as soon as possible that he may have an opportunity to lay them before the Commissioners. Brown, Joseph

Extract from the report of lands claimed before the Commissioners for the County of Lincoln and allowed, dated Newark 8th May 1798. John Ellis 12-7th –100-Grantham-Joseph Brown. It appears by the Surveyor Generals Report dated 12th July 1798, on the above mentioned Commissioners Report, that no description had then issued for the above mentioned lot. Butler, Andrew

On 18 Jan 1791 the Land Board read the petition of Andrew Butler for a grant of 200 acres of land in the Township No. 3 (Grantham) and found him qualified for a grant of 200 acres. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him two hundred acres in Lot 10 Concessions 1 and 2 in the Township of No. 3. Added note of the Land Board dated 11 Apr 1791: Lieut. Andrew Butler having this day petitioned the Board for leave to sell the within Lot to George Reid we do hereby confirm the said sale and direct that this Lot No. 10 in first concession of Township No. 3 shall stand in the name and remain the property of the said George Reid. On 30 Dec 1841 James H. Sears wrote to John Simpson, Commissioner of Crown Lands Noting Lot No. 14 in the 5 Concession of the Township of Grantham was confiscated after the late war as the property of an alien but on account of a fictitious claim which was set up it was not sold; it remains however Crown property, and the object of this communication is to ascertain if the Government will dispose of it, and upon what terms, as Sears wishes to purchase it if it can be had at a fair valuation. On 20 Aug 1886 George Mudge wrote to John Simpson, Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote The Reverend Mr. Clarke of St. Catharines applied for Lot No. 14, 5th Concession Grantham. It was deed in 1795 to Andrew Butler and has since become a forfeited estate. The Commissioners cannot sell it because of a difficulty about the title. It is now in the occupation of one Cassady by license from General Hunter he states, but has not produced the license. (Grantham Township Papers 0305)
