Crowland Township Papers "S-T"

Seger, Henry

On 23 Oct 1834 Henry Seger wrote to S. P. Hurd Esq. stating he is the owner and possessor of 200 acres of land in Crowland known at the Surveyor General’s office by the Samuel Willson tract. The Kings Patent for the same is dated the 9th day of April 1798 composed of Lot 21 in the 7th Concession and the south end of 21 in the 6th Concession of Crowland. He has been in possession of the south 100 acres of said land about 21 years and taxes for the same and the patentee settled and built a house on that tract called the Gore about 4 years previous to the raising of the patent making about 40 years occupant possession. He lived peaceably on the above named 100 acres until a short time since one John Yokom thinking that part called the Gore was vacant cleared a field on the southeast side of Lyons Creek and petitioned the Governor and Council for the same. It was not granted to him and Seger became confirmed in his belief that it belonged to him. However, Yokom and himself continued to improve the Gore, he on the southeast side of Lyons Creek and Seger on the northwest side until Mr. E. Rankin came to survey the said Gore. Mr. Rankin was at Seger’s home several days and said the Gore was his and belonged to the Samuel Willson tract. Seger then went to Yokom and acquainted him with the advice he received from Mr. Ranken, and Yokom gave Seger possession of the land he had cleared. Seger then had the same in peace until the 16th of the present instant on James Akins pretends to say he holds the Gore of the 7th Concession by a location ticket. Seger stated he would be loath to have the gentleman for a neighbour and more so to give up to him nearly 40 acres of his land. If Colonel Darling has fifteen acres of of 21 in the sixth concession and Mr. Akens takes from him the gore of the 7th Concession, he shall have only 150 acres instead of 200. Seger noted he served his King and country in Captain John Warren’s Flank Company and when it was dismissed he entered the service with his team under Major [….] of the 19th Dragoons and continued in the service during the late war. Signed Henry Seger (Crowland Township Papers 0534)

Added undated note of Henry Seger stating if the Gore of 21 in the 7 Concession does not belong to the S. Willson tract, he would be glad to purchase it adequate to a formal resolution in Council. (Crowland Township Papers 0533)

On 7 May 1835 James Ekins wrote to the Surveyor General that a stake marked 21 R on the southeast part of Lot No. 21 in the 7th Concession of Crowland on the Crowland line has of late been destroyed. John Yokom a settler in Lot 20 has made oath to said stake being of 23 years standing to his knowledge. A corner stake on the southwest corner was destroyed on Wednesday the 29th ult. by Henry Sager a settler on Lot 21 in the 7 concession of Crowland who I have seen destroy said stake. Ekins has been to two of His Majesty’s Justices of the Peace concerning said stakes, who ordered him to call on the others having knowledge of the place where said stake has stood to plant others in their place.
