On 24 Oct 1795 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared a surveyor’s assignment for James Jones for two hundred acres of land in Lots 34 and 35 Thorold Twp. (Thorold Township Papers 0011)


Karagham, Thomas

Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for Thomas Karagham for one hundred acres of land in Lot 168 Thorold Twp. Added note: Thomas Waters name was on the plan. (Thorold Township Papers 0401)


Keefer, George

On 12 Mar 1792 the Land Board read the petition of George Keefer for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith who assigned to him on 8 Sep 1794 one hundred acres in Lots 10 and 18 in the Township of No. 9. Added note of D. W. Smith: Personally appeared before me at the Sur. Gen. Office, the day aforesaid John Wilson, who declared he had no claim to the above Lots and that the entry made of his name must have been a mistake. (Thorold Township Papers 0049)

Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for George Keefer for 136 acres of land in Lots 10 and 18 (sometimes called the Gore) Thorold Twp. (Thorold Township Papers 0047)

On 12 May 1792 the Land Board read the petition of James Lawroway for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor D. W. Smith who on 20 Sep 1794 assigned to him seventy acres in Lots 9 and 11 in the Township of No. 9. Added note of D. W. Smith: Personally appeared before me at the Sur. Gen. Office, John Wilson & Jacob Bowman who declared they had no claim to the above Lots & that the Entry made of their names must have been a mistake. Noted on the reverse: The Land Board authorise the transfer of the within Lotts from Jonas Lawroway to George Kefer—Newark Nov 5th 1793. (Thorold Township Papers 0041)

On 12 Mar 1793 the Land Board read the petition of John Hill Junior for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him two hundred acres in Lot 5 in the 2nd Concession Township of No. 9. Added note of Acting Surveyors General Chewett and Ridout: This is the property called the broken Lot No. eight in the Township of Thorold. It is understood that the western moiety of this Lot by agreement of the parties is to be the property of George Keefer. Added survey map showing the division between Hill and Keefer. Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for Jonas Laroway transferred to George “Kefer” for 17 acres of land in Lot 11 Thorold Twp. (Thorold Township Papers 0037)

Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for Jonas Lawroway transferred to George “Kefer” for 54 acres of land in Lot 9 Thorold Twp. (Thorold Township Papers 0039)

In a letter marked received 22 Aug 1801, Ralfe Clench, Clerk of the Peace for the District of Niagara wrote Mr. George Keefer of Thorold is uneasy respecting a half lot of which old Mr. Hill or his son has the other half. His deed for the one having paid and not for the half lot on which his buildings and at least thirty acres of cleared lands are. Clench sent herein his plan...he is a good industrious young man and will be thankful for anything that may be done for him. (Thorold Township Papers 0022)

On 2 Apr 1803 Acting Surveyors General Chewett and Ridout reported a search in the Surveyor General’s Office found entered George Keefer for 31 and a half acres of land in the west half of Lot 8 in the Gore of Thorold Twp. under authority of a Land Board Certificate (Thorold Township Papers 0019)

On 7 Nov 1806 Acting Surveyor General Thomas Ridout wrote to Solicitor General D’Arcy Boulton, Esq. stating the bearer George Keefer is desirous to obtain a patent for the west half of Lot No. 8 in Thorold containing 31 acres and a half, and also a deed for the east half of the same lot containing the same quantity in the name of John Hill Junr. The description (No. 1718) passed this office ten years ago and there is reason to believe it is now in your office. (Thorold Township Papers 0024)

On 17 Nov 1806 Ralfe Clench, Clerk of the Peace for the District of Niagara certified that Mr. George Keefer claimed the within named land before the Commissioners for Ascertaining Titles to Land. It appears that this claim was withdrawn as well as a claim of Elizabeth Herons, a devisee and Executrix of the late deceased John Hill Sen. for the other half of said lot of land. On 23 Feb 1809 the Executive Council of Upper Canada ordered a deed issued to George Keefer of the Township of Thorold for the west half of Lot eight in the Gore (otherwise called number five in the second concession of the Township of Thorold. (Thorold Township Papers 0032)

On 24 Feb 1809 John Hill paid into the Office of P. Selby, Acting Receiver General two pounds ten shillings and two pence for the patent fee on 31 acres and a half in the east half of Lot 8 in Thorold Twp. and George Keefer also paid two pounds ten shillings and two pence for the patent fee on 31 and a half acres for the west half of the same lot. On 24 Feb 1809 Acting Surveyors General Chewett and Ridout prepared a surveyor’s assignment for George Keefer for 32 acres of land in the west half of Lot 8 in the Gore of Thorold Twp. as per an Order in Council of 23 Feb 1809. (Thorold Township Papers 0034)


Kelly, John

On 9 Feb 1791 the Land Board read the petition of John Kelly for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him two hundred acres in Lots 6 and 7 Concession 4 in the Township of No. 9. In a marginal note of 10 Jul 1794 D. W. Smith wrote: These Lots are numbered on the Plan recd. from P. Holland Esqr. 48 & 49 which lots I assign to the said John Kelly. (Thorold Township Papers 0153)

Knavenshe, George

On 12 Mar 1792 the Land Board read the petition of George Knavenshe for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him two hundred acres in Lots 20 and 21 Concession 6 in the Township of No. 9. Added note of the Land Board dated 7 Jun 1794: The present possessor George Knavenshan has permission from the Board agreeable to the prayer to transfer Lots No. 20 and 21 in the 6th Concession 9th Township to Jonathan Hagar.
