On 10 Jul 1801 the Executive Council gave a grant to Joseph Palmer of Fort Erie, Bertie Twp., yeoman for 492 acres of land in Lots 1 and 2 Concessions 1 and 2 Bertie Twp. with the broken fronts on Lake Erie situated above and adjoining to the Reserve round Fort Erie (Bertie Township Papers 0116)

Peer, John

On 3 May 1791 the Land Board read the petition of Richard Ruth for a grant of 200 acres of land in Township No. 3 (Fort Erie crossed out-sic: Bertie) and found him qualified to receive a lot. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to Ruth 100 acres in Lot 1 Concession 1 of Township No. Fort Erie. At the bottom was written, “This Lott of one hundred achors is to be equally divided between Richard Ruth and Daniel Alward Jr. by the Board. Signed W. B. Sheehan, Clerk. On the reverse is a statement, “I Richard Ruth do sign my right of this sirtificate to John Peer forever. Richard Ruth made his mark, witnessed by Edward Peer. (Bertie Township Papers 0110)

Petrie, Joseph

On 3 May 1791 the Land Board read the petition of Joseph Petrie for a grant of 200 acres of land in the Township No. Fort Erie (Bertie) and found him qualified to receive a lot. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to Petrie 200 acres in Lot 2 Concession 1 of Township No. Fort Erie. In the margin is written No. has been allowed to Mr. Thos. Dickson (Bertie Township Papers 0287)

On 18 Apr 1795 John Warren renounced all his right and title and quit claimed 50 acres of land adjoining Lot 3 Concession 2 Bertie Twp. of which he stood possessed and certified that by an agreement made between Benjamin Wintermute and Joseph Petrie, the latter having obtained a certificate from the Land Board for 100 acres of said lot which he has surveyed to said Benjamin. That the above mentioned fifty acres does in consequence of their agreement vest in and become the real property of Benjamin Wintermute. Signed John Warren (Bertie Township Papers 0290)

Pier, Edward

On 12 Mar 1792 the Land Board read the petition of Edward Pier for a grant of 200 acres of land in the Township above Fort Erie (Bertie) and found him qualified to receive a lot. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to Pier 100 acres in Lot 22 in front of the First Concession of Township No. Fort Erie. (Bertie Township Papers 0029)

In a note of the Land Board dated at Newark on 15 Feb 1794, the Board consented to the transfer of Lot 22 in front of the First Concession Bertie Twp. from Edward Pier to Matthias Hawn (Bertie Township Papers 0031)

Plato, Christian

On 10 May 1804 Thomas Dickson wrote to the Chief Justice noting he wrote during the previous winter on behalf of an old man of the name of Christian Plato to enquire if his grant for 200 acres in Bertie was made out for Lots 1 and 2 Concession 4. He never got a Land Board certificate though he has lived on the land since the settlement and was first made. (Bertie Township Papers 0477)

On 15 May 1804 John Small wrote Lots 1 and 2 in the 4th Concession of Bertie are returned on the Quebec Plan to Christian Plato and have not been described. (Bertie Township Papers 0478)

On 26 Jun 1804 Thomas Scott prepared a fiat for a grant to Christian Plato of Bertie Twp., yeoman for Lots 1 and 2 in the 4th Concession from the River Niagara Bertie Twp. as per the 5th Claim Niagara Commission for 1804. (Bertie Township Papers 480)

On 28 Jun 1804 Acting Surveyors General Chewett and Ridout prepared a surveyor’s assignment for Christian Plato for 200 acres of land in Lots 1 and 2 Concession 4 from the Niagara River Bertie Twp. as per the 5th Claim Niagara Commission 1804 (Bertie Township Papers 0482)

Plato, Peter

On 2 Jul 1795 Peter Platto personally appeared before the Executive Council and requested his lands due to him as a discharged soldier from Butlers Rangers. His discharge being produced, it was ordered that he be referred to the Acting Surveyor General for a location of three hundred acres. (Bertie Township Papers 0746)

On 2 Jul 1795 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared a certificate for Peter Platto for 300 acres in Lots 6, 7 and 8 Concession 13 Bertie Twp. (Bertie Township Papers 0747)

Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for Peter Platto for 300 acres of land in Lots 6, 7 and 8 Concession 13 from the Niagara River Bertie Twp. (Bertie Township Papers 0744)

Pound, Daniel

On 3 May 1791 the Land Board read the petition of Joseph Ransier for a grant of 200 acres of land in the Township No 2 (Bertie) and found him qualified to receive a lot. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to Ransier 200 acres in Lots 22 and 23 Concession 1 of Township No. . On the reverse is a notation that David Tuttle the bearer says Crane expects the deed to come to Pound of Bertie, yeoman to whom the land board have transferred it from Ransier. A note below this signed by Daniel Pound and witnessed by John Peer and Daniel Alward transferred his right and title to Jacob Crane. (Bertie Township Papers 0242, 0247, 0250)

On 22 Nov 1791 the Executive Council agreed to confirm the transfer of Lots 22 and 23 Concession 1 Bertie Twp. from Joseph Ransier to Daniel Pond (sic). (Bertie Township Papers 0244)

Powell, John (Captain)

On 16 Sep 1797 John Powell wrote to D. W. Smith Esq. that it was agreed at the Land Board that Lots 8 and 9 in Concession 1 Fort Erie Township (sic: Bertie) should be divided in three equal parts between Philip Wintermute, Henry Angerish and himself—settled before the Land Board the 4th of November 1791 (Bertie Township Papers 0171)

On 22 Jan 1797 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for Captain John Powell for 1540 acres of land in Lots 11 and 12 Concession 6, Lot 13 Concession 7, Lots 4, 6, 7 and 8 Concession 12, Lots 2, 3, 4, 5, 15 and 16 Concession 13, Lots 3 and 6 Concession 14 and the east part of Lot 4 Concession 9 from the Niagara River Bertie Twp. as per a warrant of 11 Oct 1796. On 17 Oct 1796 described 1610 acres. On 22 Jan described 1540 acres. Total 3150. Military Lands—3000 Family Lands—150. Total 3,150. (Bertie Township Papers 0585)

Extract from the Attorney General issued by the Surveyor General’s Office on 11 Apr 1806 noting Land Board Certificate 3 May 1791 and Mr. Jones Deputy Surveyor`s assignment for Lots 8 and 9 Concession 1 Bertie Twp. with the partition by order of the Land Board as follows, vizt. “These two Lots are to be equally divided between Philip Wintermute, John Powell Eq and Henry Anguish who are to have one third each.” (Bertie Township Papers 0175)

Powell, William

On 18 Oct 1820 Surveyor Thomas Ridout prepared a surveyor’s assignment for William Powell of Bertie Twp., yeoman for 200 acres of land in the north part of Lot 9 Concession 1 Bertie Twp. The document noted John Powell was the original nominee (Bertie Township Papers 0181)

On 9 Sep 1820 Ridout wrote he received the land granting offices fees on 61 acres of land being part of Lot No. 9 in the 1st Concession of Bertie allowed to William Powell under the 3d Claim Commissioners Report in July 1819, John Powell nominee under the regulations prior to 1 July 1796 £2.10.2. Putman, Elizabeth

On 19 Nov 1812 Surveyor General Thomas Ridout gave a grant to Elizabeth Putman of Bertie Twp., daughter of Henry Putman a UE Loyalist for 200 acres of land in Lots 33 and 34 Concession 2 form the Lake Bertie Twp. as per an Order in Council of 25 Feb 1809 (Bertie Township Papers 0364)

Putman, Henry

On 3 May 1791 the Land Board read the petition of John Carl for a grant of 200 acres of land in the Township of Fort Erie (Bertie) and found him qualified to receive a lot. On 9 Apr 1802 the Executive Council of Upper Canada gave a grant to Mary Putman of Bertie Twp. and daughter of Henry Putman a UE Loyalist for 200 acres of land in Lot 32 Concession 2 and Lot 33 in the broken front from Lake Erie Bertie Twp. in rear of Lands granted to Francis Elsworth (Bertie Township Papers 0358)

On 21 Sep 1812 William Stanton Esq. wrote the Lots Nos. 32, 33 and 34 in the second concession and the northerly part of Lot No. 33 in the broken front of the Township of Bertie containing each 100 acres have been ordered to Mrs. Fish and her sister Elizabeth Putman and if they will determine what lots they respectively agree to take and send a memo thereof to the Surveyor Generals Office the deeds can be completed. On 21 Sep 1812 William Stanton wrote to Surveyor General Thomas Ridout Esq. the President is pleased to permit Mary Fish and Elizabeth Putman DUE’s to locate the Lots No. 32, 33 and 34 in the second concession from the Lake in the Township of Bertie and the northly part of Lot No. 33 in the broken front of the same Township containing together four hundre acres. Ransier, Joseph

Smith prepared a surveyor’s assignment for Richard Ruth and Daniel Alwood Jr. stating were to equally divide between them, “Lot No. 5 first Concession towards Lake Erie, Bertie (being the Lot No. 1 of the south westerly addition to said Township).” He then described the boundaries of the 100 acres.
