On 2 Aug 1794 the Land Board read the petition of John Camp for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith who on 4 Aug 1794 assigned to him two hundred acres in Lots 250 and 251 and the broken front of Lot No. 250 in the Township of No. 9. Canby, Benjamin

On 10 Feb 1791 the Land Board read the petition of Benjamin Canby for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him two hundred acres in Lots 21 and 22 Concession 7 in the Township of No. 9. Added note of D. W. On 12 Mar 1792 the Land Board read the petition of Benjamin Canby for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him two hundred acres in Lot 23 Concessions 3 and 4 in the Township of No. 9. (Thorold Township Papers 0203)


Carl, John

On 19 Jul 1794 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for John Carl for two hundred acres of land in Lots 186, 203, 204 and 213 Thorold Twp. with the broken land on Chippewa Creek Thorold Twp. Added ticket from Robert Hamilton, Land Board Commissioner: “Good for four Lotts land John Carl—By order of the board. Signed R. Hamilton Jany 28, 1789.” (Thorold Township Papers 0451)

Chewett, William Esquire

Locations made in the Surveyor Generals Office 23 Apr 1805 by persons paying the whole of the Patent Fess & Survey under the Regulations of the 9th January 1804 subject to the Table of Fees of the 6 July 1804—William Chewett Esqur. Lot 17 in the Township of Thorold 100 acres; Lot 2 in the 2nd Range of the Gore of Grimsby south of 20 Mile Creek 200 acres; The broken Lot No. 22 7th Concession York upon the River Humber 72 acres; A tract of land in the Township of Niagara bounded be the lands of Messrs Pickard on the south, by Messrs Ball on the east and by the Four Mile Creek on the north and west formerly occupied by, and assigned to John Snow, but cancelled by order of His Excellency Lieut. Clark, John

On 8 Oct 1829 Acting Surveyor General W. Chewett prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for John Clark of Thorold Twp., yeoman as heir at law and eldest son of John Clark late of the same place deceased for 200 acres of land in Lots 211 and 212 Thorold Twp. under the 57th Claim Commissioners ReportS in July 1822. Cohoe, Andrew

On 10 Jun 1791 the Land Board read the petition of Edward Topham for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith who on 3 Aug 1794 assigned to him Lot 1 Concession 8 of Township No. 10 containing 100 acres and Lot No. 73 in the Township of No. 9 containing one hundred acres, the Land Board having certified that the said lot was assigned by petition from Andrew Cohoe to the said Topham by their consent. Couke, George

On 9 Feb 1791 the Land Board read the petition of George Couke for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found he has received two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 as a Loyalist and he has settled on and improved the same and that he is entitled to a further assignment of two hundred acres for his wife and three children. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to George Couke or Louke two hundred acres in Lot 3 Concessions 6 and 7 in the Township of No. 9. Marginal note of D. W. On 10 May 1791 the Land Board read the petition of George Couke for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him two hundred acres in Lot 3 Concessions 4 and 5 in the Township of No. 9. Added note of D. W. Crawford, James

On 25 Feb 1797 the Executive Council of Upper Canada gave an Order in Council to James Crawford a discharged Ranger for 50 acres. (Thorold Township Papers 0498)

Crysler, John and Rebecca

On 29 Sep 1811 Francis Gore Esquire Lieutenant Governor of the Province of Upper Canada gave a license to John Crysler of Thorold Twp., for Glebe Land Lots 121 and 122 Thorold Twp. for an annual rent of 10 shillings in two equal payments on 25 Mar and 29 Sep every year. (Thorold Township Papers 0296)

On 24 Dec 1816 Receiver General John Gill sent a circular to John Chrysler occupant of Lots 121 and 122 Thorold Twp. raising the rent on Glebe lands as of the first day of January next to one pound five shillings per annum for each lot and to expect no renewal of license after the first of January 1818 unless the rent is paid. On 29 Mar 1828 John Chrysler wrote to Hon. Peter Robinson stating he was desirous of purchasing the Clergy Glebe Lots No. 121 and 122 containing 100 acres in the Township of Thorold and will give 10 shillings currency per acre and comply with the conditions set. On 16 Sep 1828 John Crysler, yeoman of the Township of Thorold made his last will and testament. He bequeathed the farm on which he lived in the west half of Lot 145 Thorold Twp. to his wife Rebecca Crysler. He bequeathed twenty shillings currency each to his eldest son Adam Crysler, his son Harmanious Crysler and his daughter Catharine Crysler. He gave the east half of his Glebe Lot Number 122 to his daughter Hannah Crysler and two milch cows, one feather bed and bedding and six sheep when she shall be eighteen years of age, to be held in her mother’s hands until she came of age. He left the west half of Lot number 145 Thorold Twp. to his son William Lewis Crysler to take possession at his mother’s death or marriage. He gave the remaining part of his glebe lot 122 Thorold being fifty acres to his son William Lewis Crysler. He ordered Lot 121 to be sold and the money from it applied to the payment of Lot 122 in order to pay for the deeds for his daughter Hannah Crysler and his son William Lewis Crysler that their deeds may come to them clear from the Government. With any money left over the Executors may purchase the east half of this lot from his daughter Catharine for his son William Lewis Crysler. If William Lewis Crysler should die before he should come of age then he ordered that his grandson John Crysler son of Harmaneous Crysler should have the land before willed to his son William Lewis Crysler. If his daughter Hannah should die before she should come of age, his son Harmanious Crysler shall take her share of the land. He appointed son Harmaneous Crysler and stepson Thomas Ellison his Executors. John Crysler made his mark witnessed by John Hill, Jacob Vanderburgh, H. Woodside and William Vanderburgh. On 22 Jan 1831 J. Secord Senr. Registrar of the Surrogate Court certified the within is a true copy of the last will and testament of John Crysler deceased, late of the Township of Thorold. On 1 Aug 1833 Rebecca Crysler wrote to Peter Robinson Esquire noting John Crysler of the Township of Thorold held a lease for Lots 121 and 122 and the said John Crysler by his last will and testament bearing date 16 Sep 1828 gave directions what should be done with the land after the right of said was paid for by his Executors. She is his widow and still in possession and by the income of this land, which she still wishes to pay the government for. She implored assistance in the case that the land may continue in her possession as she will give as much for the right of soil as any other person in order to enable he to brig up her helpless children. Rebecca Crysler made her mark. (Thorold Township Papers 0286)

On 14 Aug 1855 John Frazer, MPP wrote to Jacob Misener Esqr. asking him to enquire of Mr. Talbot of the Crown Lands Office in what position Lot. No. 122 in the Township of Thorold stands. Mrs. Chrysler has been working the lot. There is about 60 acres of land cleared by the late Mr. Chrysler and is now partly worked by Mr. William Vanderburgh and the widow of the late Mr. Chrysler. On 12 Mar 1856 William Wright and Thomas Robertson, yeomen of the Township of Thorold appeared before John Radcliff J. P. and said they are well acquainted with William L. Crysler yeoman also of said township of Thorold and know him to be the son and devisee of the late John Crysler, and that the said Wm. L. Crysler is now in possession and has always been in possession since the death of his said father of Lot No. 122 Thorold Twp. containing 100 acres and that the said Wm. L. Crysler has produced to them a lease for the said land dated 20 Sep 1811 and signed by the late Francis Gore, Lt. Governor of the Province of Upper Canada. Signed Wm. Wright and Thos. Robertson. On 8 Feb 1871 Th. H. Johnson, Assistant Commissioner wrote to J. C. Rykert Esq., P. P. P. Legislative Assembly stating Lot No. 122 in the Township of Thorold formerly known as a part of Dorchester Glebe has not been granted by the Crown. A license of occupation was given to Mr. John Crysler for this Lot as well as for Lot No. 121 in the year 1811 but the last mentioned Lot was granted to the Rectory of Thorold in the year 1836. Chrysler, Mathias

On 18 Oct 1794 the Land Board read the petition of Mathias Chrysler for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land.
