Reilly, John

On 12 Apr 1792 the Land Board read the petition of John Reilly Esqr., Peter Thompson, Archibald Thompson, Thomas McMicking and James Cooper, yeomen of the Township of Stamford, Trustees for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 2 (Stamford) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to them two hundred acres in Lots 44 and 45 (sic) in the Township of No. 2. Added note signed by the members of the Land Board on 15 Apr 1792: The two lots within granted to the township of Mount Dorchester in the name of the Trustees arises from the following circumstance—at the first settlement of this township Allan McDonell then employed as surveyor laid out the lots with an allowance of a chain only between every two lots for highways. When P. Frey again surveyed this town it was found that the alterations would put the settlers in the greatest confusion and it was therefore unanimously agreed to permit McDonell’s survey to stand. On 24 Jun 1835, George H. Markland, Commissioner reported Lots 44 and 55 set apart as town land in Stamford in consequence of the allowance for road—under a Land Board Certificate 1792 the said lots were ascribed to John Reilly from Archibald Thompson—Thomas McMicken and James Cooper, Yeomen in trust for the Presbyterian congregation of Stamford. The lands granted in trust for the benefit of the incumbent clergyman of the Presbyterian Episcopal Church does not include lands but is composed of Glebes (Stamford Township Papers 0226)

On 6 Apr 1805 Acting Surveyors General Chewett and Ridout prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for John Reilly, Esquire, Peter Thompson, Archibald Thompson, Thomas McMicking and James Cooper, yeomen of the Township of Stamford in trust for the Presbyterian Congregation of the Township of Stamford for 150 acres of land in Lots 55 and the east part of Lot 44 Stamford Twp. as per Land Board Certificate dated 12 Apr 1792 (Stamford Township Papers 0236)


Richardson, Robert

On 3 May 1792 the Land Board read the petition of Robert Richardson, surgeon for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 2 (Stamford) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him two hundred acres in Lots 3 and 4 in the Township of No. 2. Note of Augustus Jones: The above lots No. 3 and 4 are fronting Chippeway. Numbered from the mouth upwards. Note in the margin: These lots have been long possessed by widow Brian and sold by her to R. Hamilton who gives up right and title to Robert Richardson of the Queen’s Rangers. On 21 Oct 1796 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared a surveyor’s assignment for Robert Richardson for two hundred acres of land in Lots 3 and 4 fronting on Chippewa in the Township No. 2 which lots upon Major Holland’s Plan are 222 and 221 in the Township of Stamford with Bryans name on 222 and John Burch on 223 (sic). In the margin of the certificate of the Land Board 3 May 1792—to Robert Richardson, Surgeon. N. B. These lots have been long possessed by Widow Bryan and sold by her to R. Hamilton who gives up his right and title to Robert Richardson of the Queens Rangers. (Stamford Township Papers 0856)

On 9 Apr 1799 Robert Richardson and wife of Bertie, original patentee sold to Joseph Pell of Stamford 200 acres in Lots No. 221 and 222 Stamford. Registered 2 Mar 1801. Recorded 11 Apr 1808. (Stamford Township Papers 0775)


Robertson, Joseph

On 3 Jan 1791 the Land Board read the petition of Thomas Martin for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 2 (Stamford) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him one hundred acres in Lot 28 in the Township of No. 2. On 22 Feb 1791 the Land Board considered a petition of Joseph Robertson and Thomas Martin and confirmed the transfer by Thomas Martin to Joseph Robertson of Lot 28 Township No. 2 and directed Joseph Robertson’s name to be inserted therein. On 22 Jan 1797 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith noted Thomas Martin transferred to Joseph Robertson Lot 28 Stamford Twp. Joseph Robertson says he bought the improvement only from Thomas Martin. He then gave a surveyor’s description of the lot. (Stamford Township Papers 0166)

On 16 May 1811 William Jarvis, Secretary of The Executive Council wrote to the Surveyor General stating there has not been a deed completed in the name of Joseph Robinson for Lot 28 Township of Stamford. (Stamford Township Papers 0168)

On 28 Jun 1811 Surveyor General Thomas Ridout prepared a surveyor’s assignment for Joseph Robertson of Stamford Twp., yeoman, for one hundred acres of land in Lots 28 Stamford Twp. as per a Land Board Certificate dated 15 Jan 1791 to Thomas Martin and transferred by the Board 22 Feb 1791 to Joseph Robertson. On 13 Mar 182_ D. Thorburn wrote to Hon. Peter Robinson, Commissioner Crown Lands stating he was requested by William Rolls of Stamford to make application relative to Clergy Lot 106 Stamford if it can be sold or leased and upon what conditions. Seburn/Seaburn, Stephen

On 10 Jun 1791 the Land Board read the petition of ____ for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 2 (Stamford) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. On 8 Mar 1817 The Executive Council ordered that the erroneous patent granting to Stephen Seaburn for Lot 59 in Stamford and Lots 123, 124 and 125 in Thorold dated 1 Sep 1797 and surrendered to the Crown on 6 Oct 1816 by the grantee Stephen Seburn, be impounded in the Council Office, the surrender accepted and that new and correct patents be issues conformable to the true descriptions of the Surveyor General No. 1773 and 1774. On 25 Mar 1817 Surveyor General Thomas Ridout prepared a surveyor’s assignment for Stephen Seburn of Stamford Twp., yeoman for one hundred acres of land in Lot 50 Stamford Twp. as per an Order-in-Council of 8 Mar 1817. The patent granted to Stephen Seaburn for Lot 50 in Stamford and Lots 123, 124 and 125 in Thorold dated 1 Sep 1797 surrendered to the Crown 6 Oct 1816 by the grantee. True name is Stephen Seburn. Grant be impounded in the Council office and surrender accepted and that correct Patents issue conformable to the true descriptions of the surveyor general. (Stamford Township Papers 0273)

On 19 May 1803, H. Allcock, CJ certified that Johanna Silverthorn of Stamford, widow has established before the Commissioners for Ascertaining and Securing Titles to Lands for the District of Niagara, her claim to the east half of Lot Number 141 in the Township of Stamford containing fifty acres and that she will be reported for a deed of grant tereof accordingly. Skinner, Timothy

On 12 Mar 1792 the Land Board read the petition of Timothy Skinner for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 2 (Stamford) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him two hundred acres in Lots 160 and 173 in the Township of No. 2. The north side of Lot 160 contains about 50 acres (Stamford Township Papers 0664)

On 3 May 1792 the Land Board read the petition of Timothy Skinner for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 2 (Stamford) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him two hundred acres in Lot 3 on the River and the lot behind it in the Township of No. 2. Written in the margin: It is understood by the Land board that Timothy Skinner is bound to assign to John Burch Esq. fifty nine and 3/4 acres as per agreement which assignation the Land board hereby confirms. On 19 Dec 1796 Timothy Skinner certified that he had no claim to half the broken front east of No. 160 containing 15 acres on Niagara River in Stamford which with 35 acres of No. 160 is the property of Francis Elsworth. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him two hundred acres in Lots 15 and 16 on Chippewayin the Township of No. 2. Added note of Augustus Jones: The above Lots No. 15 and 16 are numbered from the mouth of Chippeway upwards on the front. Added note of the Land Board dated 25 May 1793 on the reverse: The Land Board consent to the assignment of the within lots from Mathew Pearson (sic) to James Thomson (sic). Below this is a deed dated 6 Oct 1795 from Mathew Peirson to James Slaght in consideration of forty-five pound Lot 16 now in the occupation of James Slaght. Signed Mathew Peirson. Witnessed by A. Springsted, Staats

On 25 Jan 1803 a search of the Surveyor General’s Office gave an entry of 23 Jan 1795 from Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith on Lots 15 and 26 in the Quebec Plan of the Township of Stamford and upon Lots 6 and 15 under the authority of a Land Board Certificate of 12 Mar 1792: Peter McMicken 21 or 26; Staats Springsteen 22 or 15; Peter Medack 23 or 6. To Peter Meddack, upon whose certificate is the following remark by the Land Board: This land lies on the south of the townline and has John Stacey and John Lutes on the west—Gilbert Tice on the east and Staats Springsteen on the south. Forty six acres of the Lot 22 property of Staats Springsteen, he giving an equal quantity from Lot 21 as settled by arbitration. (Stamford Township Papers 0145)

On 18 Feb 1808 Acting Surveyor General J. Ridout prepared a surveyor’s assignment for Staats Springsted of Stamford Twp. for one hundred acres of land in the east parts of Lots 15 and 26 Stamford Twp. as per Land Board Certificate in 1788 destroyed by fire, acted upon 9 Jul 1796 (Stamford Township Papers 0134)

Undated memo: Township of Stamford Lots No. 15 & 26. Peter Meddaugh has been allowed as returned of the west part of No. 15—54 acres, the west part of No. 26—46 acres, Niagara Commission 1803 total one hundred acres. On the Quebec Plan Staats Springstien is formerly entered for the whole of Lot No. 15 and for the [north] half of Lot No. 26 containing together 150 acres. The south half of the said No. 15 was entered to Peter McMicken 50 acres. Mr. Church says that no part of Lot No. 15 ever belonged to Peter McMicken and that he never had any claim or pretension thereto, but that Lot No. 17 on which the late Surveyor General Mr. Smith has written “for Peter McMicken if no prior claim” is the lot in question by Peter McMicken. On 24 Mar 1808 Walter Butler Sheehan appeared before Robert Kerr, Esquire, J. P. and deposed that several years earlier during the time of the Land Board of which Sheehan was clerk, a Land Board Certificate was made out to Staats Springsteen of Stamford, farmer. The certificate was either destroyed with other effects and papers by fire as the deponent’s house was burnt, or otherwise lost or mislaid. (Stamford Township Papers 0140)


Stacey, John

On 2 May 1792 the Land Board read the petition of John Stacey for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 2 (Stamford) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him one hundred acres in Lot 6 in the Township of No. 2. Note of Jones in the margin: I apprehend this to be Lot No 7 as it appears by Major Hollands plan. Note on reverse: The Board authorize John Stacy to transfer the within named Lot No. 6 in the first Concession of the 2nd Township containing one hundred acres to William Mullinox (Stamford Township Papers 0084, 0085)


Steinhoff, Frederick

On 26 Jan 1793 the Land Board read the petition of Frederick Steinhoff for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 2 (Stamford) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith who on 9 Aug 1794 assigned to him one hundred acres in Lot 19 front lot on Chippeway in the Township of No. 2. Added note of D. W. Smith: F. Steinhoff an old settler on these lots had made application for the certificate long before this date but was delayed. Steinhoff, John

On 26 Jan 1793 the Land Board read the petition of John Steinhoff for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 2 (Stamford) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith who on 9 Aug 1794 assigned to him one hundred acres in Lots 17 and 18 fronting Chippawa counting from the mouth of the Creek in the Township of No. 2. Added note of D. W. Smith: Jo. Steinhoff an old settler on these lots had made application for the certificate long before this date but was postponed. Note of the Land Board dated 18 Oct 1794 on the reverse: The Land Board certify that a certificate has been granted by them to John Steinhoff for Lot No. 17 (208 surveyed S. Holland Esq.) first town north of Chippewa and to no other person. John Pearsons name on that Lot must be a mistake. (Stamford Township Papers 0807, 0808)

Street, Samuel

On 2 Sep 1850 their heirs of Samuel Street came to an agreement. Samuel Street by his last will and testament duly executed did devise to his son Thomas Clark Street, and heirs also named all his real and personal estate and property to be divided among his children so soon as his youngest child should arrive at the age of twenty-one years. The said youngest child has arrived at the age of twenty-one years and certain portions of the real and personal estate have been divided according to the direction of the said will. Julia Ann Macklem of Chippawa in the County of Welland one of the children of said Samuel Street and wife of Oliver Tiffany Macklem of the same place Esquire, Elizabeth Plumb of Albany in the State of New York another of the said children of Samuel Street and wife of Josiah Br[us] Plumb of the same place Esquire, Caroline Cummings of Stamford in said County of Welland, widow another of the children of the said Samuel Street inconsideration of one thousand pounds lawful money of Canada paid by said Thomas Clark Street, conveyed their right, title and interest.
