Waterhouse, Esea

On 9 Feb 1791 the Land Board read the petition of Esea Waterhouse for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him two hundred acres in Lots 12 and 13 Concession 3 in the Township of No. 9. (Thorold Township Papers 0603)

On 12 Aug 1796 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared a surveyor’s assignment for Esea Waterhouse for 280 acres of land in Lots 23, 24, 36 and 37 Thorold Twp. (Thorold Township Papers 0080)


Waters, Thomas

Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for Thomas Karagham for one hundred acres of land in Lot 168 Thorold Twp. Added note: Thomas Waters name was on the plan. (Thorold Township Papers 0401)


Welch, Thomas

On 31 May 1794 the Executive Council of Upper Canada read the petition of Thomas Welch praying for three thousand acres of land lying between the mouth of Chippawa Creek, the head of Lake Ontario, the Indian lands on the Grand River and Lake Erie and ordered that the same be referred to the Surveyor General to assign two thousand five hundred acres according to the prayer of the petition. 600 Thorold; 388 Crowland; 726 Humberstone; 809 Wainfleet. On 3 Jan 1795 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared a surveyor’s assignment for Thomas Welch for 400 acres of land in Lots 241, 249, 252 and 256 and a small broken front to the Lots No. 249 and 256 in the Township of Thorold. He next assigned 226 acres in Lot 33 Concession 1 with its broken front and the rear half of Lot 33 Concession 2 and Lot 23 Concession 3 and the front halves of Lots 24 and 25 Concession 3 Humberstone Twp. The whole lots contain 200 acres each and the half lots 100 acres making the whole of this township 700 acres. He next assigned 509 acres in Lots 2, 3 and 4 Concession 1 of the Township of Wainfleet and a further assignment of the rear half of Lot 1 Concession 2 and the front halves of Lots 2 and 3 Concession 2 Wainfleet Twp. each half lot containing 100 acres making together in this township 809 acres. Whitsell, Andrew

On 9 Feb 1791 the Land Board read the petition of Andrew Whitsell for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found he has received two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 as a reduced Private in a Corps Commanded by Col. Barton and he has settled on and improved the same and that he is entitled to a further assignment of three hundred acres for his wife and five children. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him three hundred acres in Lots 17, 18 and 19 Concession 1 in the Township of No. 9. Marginal note of D. W. On 4 Jul 1809 John Small, Secretary of the Executive Council wrote to the Attorney General granting to Andrew Whitsell of the Township of Thorold, yeoman, formerly a Sergeant in Delancey’s Corps of Volunteers, Lot number eighty-four, otherwise Lot No. 19 in the second concession) of the Township of Thorold. Privileged by the Insp. Genl. For the above mentioned 100 acres family lands as ml. (Thorold Township Papers 0221)

On 3 Jan 1810 Acting Surveyors General Chewett and Ridout prepared a surveyor’s assignment for Andrew Whitsell of Thorold Twp., yeoman formerly a Serjeant in Delancys Corps of Volunteers, for 100 acres in Lot 84 (otherwise Lot No. 19 in the Second Concession) Thorold Twp. as per an Order in Council dated 4 Jul 1809. Wilkinson, Robert

On 9 Feb 1791 the Land Board read the petition of Robert Wilkinson for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found he has received two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 as a Loyalist and he has settled on and improved the same and that he is entitled to a further assignment of two hundred acres for his wife and three children. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to George Couke or Louke two hundred acres in Lot 4 Concessions 6 and 7 in the Township of No. 9. Marginal note of D. W. Smith: These are lots No. 68 and 45. Added note: It is allowed by the Land Board that Robert Wilkinson shall give up his right to the above Lot No. 4 in the 7th Concession and receive No. 5 in the 4th Concession. D. W. Smith added another note: perhaps No. 46 and 47—by this it appears that the Land Granting Department gave the Lot originally entered D. Day, to R. Wilkinson; Day is said to have been a Mulatto and gone to the States five years. (Thorold Township Papers 0144)

Williams, Benaiah

On 17 Aug 1795 the Executive Council read the petition of Benaiah Williams stating that he has been nine years in the Province and has a wife and three children and never drawn any lands, prays for Lots No. 90 and 113 in the Township of Thorold. Ordered that he shall have a grant of four hundred acres of land and referred to the Surveyor General for the specification he prays for. (Thorold Township Papers 0238)


Williams, John

On 15 Sep 1800 the Executive Council of Upper Canada gave a grant to John Williams of Willoughby Twp., yeoman for two hundred and twenty acres in Lots 201 and 202 Thorold Twp. as per 11th Claim Niagara Commission Aug 1803. (Thorold Township Papers 0475)

Acting Surveyors General Chewett and Ridout prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for John Williams for 220 acres of land in Lots 201 and 202 with a small broken front on the River Welland Thorold Twp. (Thorold Township Papers 0471)


Willson, Irish John

On 17 May 1794 the Land Board read the petition of Irish John Wilson for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him two hundred acres in Lots 207 and 208 in the Township of No. 9. (Thorold Township Papers 0484)

On 29 Jan 1808 Thomas Scott of the Executive Council ordered a description be issue to Thomas Wilson, John Wilson and John Fanning, yeomen in Trust for the heirs of the will of Irish John Willson dated 13 Sep 1796 for 800 acres in Lots No. 206, 206, 207, 208, 209, 216, 217 and 218 Thorold Twp. under the 2nd Claim Niagara Commission Jun 1807. Willson, John

On 17 Oct 1795 John Willson of the Township of Thorold certified to Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith that having had his name entered on the Lot No. 6 in the Second Concession in the gore of the township above said according to Mr. Frey’s survey, declared he had no right for claim thereto. Wilson, John

On 12 May 1792 the Land Board read the petition of James Lawroway for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor D. W. Smith who on 20 Sep 1794 assigned to him seventy acres in Lots 9 and 11 in the Township of No. 9. Added note of D. W. Smith: Personally appeared before me at the Sur. Gen. Office, John Wilson & Jacob Bowman who declared they had no claim to the above Lots & that the Entry made of their names must have been a mistake. Noted on the reverse: The Land Board authorise the transfer of the within Lotts from Jonas Lawroway to George Kefer—Newark Nov 5th 1793. (Thorold Township Papers 0203)

On 12 Mar 1792 the Land Board read the petition of George Keefer for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith who assigned to him on 8 Sep 1794 one hundred acres in Lots 10 and 18 in the Township of No. 9. Added note of D. W. Smith: Personally appeared before me at the Sur. Gen. Office, the day aforesaid John Wilson, who declared he had no claim to the above Lots and that the entry made of his name must have been a mistake. (Thorold Township Papers 0049)

On 10 Feb 1795 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared a surveyor’s assignment for Jonas Lawraway for 138 acres of land in Lots 8, 9 and 11 Thorold Twp. and noted John Wilsons name appears by mistake on No. 9 in the plan and J. Bowman’s name appears by mistake on 11 on the plan. (Thorold Township Papers 0044)

On 18 Nov 1796 John Wilson certified that he had no claim on Lot No. 17 in the Township of Thorold and never received any certificate for the same. Signed by John Wilson and witnessed by surveyor Thomas Ridout. (Thorold Township Papers 0066)

On 21 Oct 1796 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared a surveyor’s assignment for Israel Sweezy for 550 acres of land in the west half of Lot 53 and the Lots 54, 55, 75, 76 and 77 Thorold Twp. Added note: with 2 Ld. Bd. Certificates—one of which it is observed that No. 11.4th Conc. that is No. 53, is to be divided with John Wilson. (Thorold Township Papers 0157)

Winger, Christian

On 29 Jan 1795 Christian Winger aged 23, born in Pennsylvania, farmer appeared before John Small and took the prescribed oaths and was recommended for a grant of two hundred acres of land.
