Scram, John

On 2 Jan 1805 The Executive Council of Upper Canada of Upper Canada gave a grant to ­­­­­John Scram of the Township of Grantham, yeoman, late a soldier in Colonel Euston’s Corps, for two hundred acres including family lands under an Order in Council 13th Jul 1796 as a UE Loyalist for which a warrant of survey issued on the 30th March 1797. On 4 Jan 1805 The Executive Council of Upper Canada of Upper Canada gave a grant to ­­­­­John Scram of the Township of Grantham, yeoman, late a soldier in Colonel Euston’s Corps, Lot No. 14 in the 2nd Concession and Lots No. 13 and 16 in the 3rd Concession as a UE: under the unassigned Land Board Certificates for 100 acres each dated 18th January 1791. On 5 Jan 1805 Acting Surveyors General Chewett and Ridout prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for John Scram of the Township of Grantham, late a soldier in Colonel Eustons Corps, a UE for 600 acres of land in Lot 14 Concession 2 and Lots 13 and 16 Concession 3 in the Township of Grantham under an Order in Council dated 2 Jan 1805. Secord, James

On 16 Jan 1791 the Land Board read the petition of James Secord for a grant of 200 acres of land in the Township No. 3 (Grantham) and found him qualified for a grant of 200 acres. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him two hundred acres in Lot No. 4 Concessions 7 and 8 in the Township of No. 3. (Grantham Township Papers 0598)

Acting Surveyors General Chewett and Ridout prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for James Secird of the Township of Niagara for 200 acres of land in Lot 4 Concessions 7 and 8 in the Township of Grantham under a Land Board Certificate of 18 Jan 1791. (Grantham Township Papers 0596)

Acting Surveyors General Chewett and Ridout wrote to the Solicitor General that Mr. James Secord is priviledged for 200 and as the 400 acres which is due to him will come out in the same patent of course that patent will come to him free of expense and he will only have to pay £1.7.6 upon the aforesaid patent as survey which sum we have received from him. Secord, Peter Jr.

On 11 Jun 1803 William Dickson wrote a memorandum to Messrs. Chewett and Ridout, Acting Surveyors General stating searches are wanted for the following persons locations: Peter Secord Junr. Lots 135 and 136 in the Township of Niagara; Donald McDonald Lot 253 in the Town of Niagara; John Rock Lot 179 in the Town of Niagara; William Osterholt Lot 3 in 7 and 8th Concession Grantham. This was by authority of The Land Board—transferred to John Clement and the certificate assignment and transfer lodged with Mr. White late Attorney General, yet cannot be now found. Grant in the original nominees name wanted. David Kemp Lot 19 Town of Niagara. David Kemp Lot 13 Concession 2 Townsend. Isaac McMichael Lot 14 Concession 2 Townsend. (Grantham Township Papers 0591)

On 2 Mar 1807 Peter Russell, Receiver General issued a receipt acknowledging Mr. Secord paid the patent fees on 200 acres in Lot 4 Concession 8 Grantham Twp.on 2 Jan 1804. He consequently is entitled on this order to 400 acres more O. R. of which 200 acres are priviledged. (Grantham Township Papers 0592)

Secord, Solomon

On 18 Jan 1791 the Land Board read the petition of Solomon Secord for a grant of 200 acres of land in the Township No. 3 (Grantham) and found him qualified for a grant of 200 acres. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him two hundred acres in Lots 1 and 2 Concession 8 in the Township of No. 3. (Grantham Township Papers 0660)

Shaver, John

On 10 Feb 1791 the Land Board read the petition of John Shaver for a grant of 200 acres of land in the Township No. 3 (Grantham) and found him qualified for a grant of 200 acres. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him two hundred acres in Lot 3 and 4 Concession 9 in the Township of No. 3. Note of the Land Board dated April 11, 1791 on the reverse: John Shaver having petitioned the Board for permission to assign this lot to Adam Hutt the Board herby confirm the transfer and direct the within lots of No. 3 & 4 of the 9th Concession in the Township No. 3 to stand in the name of Adam Hutt and to remain his property. Sheehan, Walter Butler

On 29 Mar 1790 the Land Board read the petition of Walter Butler Sheehan for a grant of 200 acres of land in the Township No. 3 (Grantham) and found him qualified for a grant of 200 acres. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him two hundred acres in Lot 8 Concessions 1 and 2 in the Township of No. 3. Note of the Land Board dated 14 Dec 1793 on the reverse: Walter Butler Sheehan having petitioned this Board to transfer the within two hundred acres of land viz. no. 8 in 1 and 2 Concessions in Township No. 4 do authorize the sales and they hereby transferred to Mr. John McKay of Newark. Skinner, Henry

On 3 May 1791 the Land Board read the petition of Henry Skinner for a grant of 200 acres of land in the Township No. 3 (Grantham) and found him qualified for a grant of 200 acres. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him 185 acres in Lot 11 Front Concession in the Township of No. 3 and Lot 22 Front Concession in 2nd Township (Stamford). Smith, Henry

On 12 Jul 1811 George Adams wrote to William Dickson, Esq. concerning Lot 21 Concession 5 Grantham Twp. In the first settling of the 12 Mile Creek in Grantham it was first settled by Butlers Rangers. A man by the name of Derrick Hainer settled on the west side of said Creek, Henry Smith upon the east side, both on No. 21 in the 5th Concession when it was in a state of nature. It was agreed by these two men that the Creek should be the boundary. Before title was obtained from the Government Henry Smith sold his improvement to Mr. Hamilton. Derrick Hainer remained on his part of the lot until he died. Before he died he left his part to his widow. She soon died and left it to her son Albert Hainer. In the year 1801, Adams purchased from Mr. Hainer the part that he claimed which was about 50 acres. In the year 1805 Adams purchased the remaining part of the lot from Albert Hainer. Adams asked Hainer where the deed was and he said Mr. Hamilton had it. Adams stated he lived on the above described lands ten years and laid out a large sum of money in improvements. He stated he went directly to Mr. Hamilton and asked him if he had the deed. Hamilton said he did not and expected he Albert had it but said he would try and find out whether the deed would come to him or to Albert. Albert says his father was entitled to it as a U. E. The whole of the lot has been improved nearly 20 years and some part of it more than 20 years, 3 or 4 and 20 years. Signed Geo. Adams. (Grantham Township Papers 0400, 0401)

On 11 Oct 1823 Surveyor General Thomas Ridout prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for George Adams of Grantham, Esquire for 100 acres of land in Lot 21 Concession 5 in the Township of Grantham under an Order in Council dated 17 Sep 1823. (Grantham Township Papers 0399)

Shmidt, Friederick

On 3 Mar 1792 Friederick Shmidt assigned to Robert Hamilton for the sum of Ninety pounds all the right and title to two lots of land with all improvements of every kind made thereon. Signed Friederick Shmidt. Witnessed by Thomas Dickson and James Middaugh. (Grantham Township Papers 0440)

Slott, Elias

On 9 Feb 1791 the Land Board read the petition of Elias Scott for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 3 (Grantham) and found he has received two hundred acres of land in Township No. 3 as a Loyalist and he has settled on and improved the same and that he is entitled to a further assignment of two hundred acres for his wife and three children. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him two hundred acres in Lot 12 Concession 6 and Lot 11 Concession 7 in the Township of No. 3. Smith, Benjamin

On 20 Jul 1803 Acting Surveyors General Chewett and Ridout prepared a surveyor’s assignment for Jacob Vanalstine of Grantham Twp., farmer for 100 acres of land in Lot 13 Concession 7 in the Township of Grantham under the 18 Claim Niagara Commission 1803, Benjamin Smith original nominee. Smith, Elias Jr.

On 23 Aug 1806 John P. Clement of Niagara, late a Lieutenant in the Indian Department expressed his satisfaction that Elias Smith of Niagara may be located on Lot No. 3 in the Eight Concession of Grantham, the farm having been originally assigned to Clement by the Land Board, but the evidences thereof having been lost in the Office of the Attorney General. Having sold the farm to George Adams, who for his benefit has procured the above location to be made in the name of Elias Smith. Signed John P. Clement and William Dickson. On 23 Aug 1806 the President of the Executive Council ordered that Elias Smith Junr. be located on Lot No. 3 in the 8th Concession of the Township of Grantham. (Niagara Township Papers 0667)

On 25 Aug 1806 Surveyor General C. B. Wyatt prepared a surveyor’s assignment for Elias Smith the younger of the Township of Niagara, yeoman, son of Elias Smith the Elder, a U. E. Loyalist for 100 acres of land in Lot 3 Concession 8 in the Township of Grantham under an Order in Council dated 19 Aug 1806, marked S. U. E. by the Inspector General.
