Johnson, Conrad

On 1 Feb 1803 the Executive Council of Upper Canada gave a grant to Conrade Johnson of Niagara Twp., yeoman for 200 acres of land in Lots 1 and 2 Concession 8 from the Niagara River Bertie Twp. as per 5th Claim Niagara Commission 1802 (Bertie Township Papers 0639)

On 5 Feb 1803 Acting Surveyors General Chewett and Ridout prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for Conrad Johnson of Niagara Twp., yeoman for 200 acres of land in Lots 1 and 2 Concession 8 from the Niagara River Bertie Twp. as per the 5th Claim Niagara Commission 1802 (Bertie Township Papers 0641)

Johnson, John

On 26 Jul 1831 Richard Graham wrote to Hon. Peter Robinson stating by enquiring at the Surveyor General office, he found that Lot 8 Concession 10 Bertie Twp. has been granted at the early settlement of the township to a person by the name of Johnson but the deed was never issued from the Crown office. Graham wished to purchase the land provided the value set upon it is not great. He was a resident of the township and he knows of no person by that name and supposed it may belong still to the Crown. On 14 Nov 1831 Richard Graham wrote a second letter to Hon. Peter Robinson concerning Lot 8 Concession 10 Bertie Twp. containing 100 acres. He understood it was granted to a person by the name of John Johnson at the early settlement of the township but who never settled it nor was now within the limits of the township. He also understood he had not obtained the Crown patent for the lot and if the grantee does not make good his claim it reverts to the Crown and can be sold. If this is the case Graham would be glad to purchase it provided the price set upon it is not greater than its value. Signed Richard Graham. (Bertie Township Papers 0710)

On 14 May 1833 Richard Graham wrote a third letter to Hon. Peter Robinson concerning Lot 8 Concession 10 Bertie Twp. He applied for the purpose of claiming before the Commissioner under the Heir and Devizees Act. The heirs of the original nominee of the crown John Johnson now deceased. He intended to claim it at the next sitting of the Commissioners. He advertised on 8 January 1833 stating that unless the said John Johnson or his heirs make good their claim to said lot within three months it would be otherwise disposed of. He understood it had been applied for by Mr. Joseph Demer of Willoughby Twp. Graham requested the lot be sold to himself and asked to be informed of the best possible means by which he could secure to the hairs the said lot at the lowest possible rate. Signed Richard Graham. Johnson, John

On 3 Jun 1796 John Johnson certified and acknowledged it was by mere accident that his name came onto Lot 7 Concession 7 Bertie Twp. and that August Anger had a large improvement on the same lot before his name was set on the map. After finding it out he went to Mr. Warren and declared before him he had no claim. If his name was still on the map he gave permission to the Surveyor General to erase it and to give it to August Anger. John “Jonson” made his mark. Witnessed by Ralph Johnson and John Gill. Johnson, Rudolph

On 3 May 1791 the Land Board read the petition of Rudolph Johnson for a grant of 200 acres of land in the Township No. Fort Erie (Bertie) and found him qualified to receive a lot. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him 200 acres in Lots 4 and 5 Concession 5 from the Niagara River of Township Fort Erie (Bertie Township Papers 500)

On 28 Apr 1803 Acting Surveyors General Chewett and Ridout prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for Rudolph Johnson for 200 acres of land in Lots 4 and 5 Concession 5 from the Niagara River Bertie Twp. as per a Land Board Certificate of 3 May 1791, (Bertie Township Papers 0503)

Johnston, Jacob/Jockham

On 12 Sep 1803 the Executive Council of Upper Canada gave a grant to Jockham Johnston of Bertie Twp., yeoman for 200 acres of land in Lots 1 and 2 Concession 7 Bertie Twp. as per 59th Claim Niagara Commission 1803. (Bertie Township Papers 0601)

Johnston, William

On 12 Aug 1795 the Executive Council read the petition of William Johnston stating that during the late War in America, he served as a Lieutenant in the Indian Department and that he has never taken up any land as a reduced subaltern. He requested the unusual quantity allowed to a reduced subaltern and the liberty to locate it at or near Long Point on Lake Erie. The Council granted the request and referred to the Surveyor General for location (Bertie Township Papers 0020)

Kennedy, James

On 1 Mar 1817 John Warren wrote to Surveyor General Thomas Ridout to enclose a description of Lot 1 Concession 16 Bertie as lately surveyed by Mr. Shubael Park. He sold this land sometime since to James Kennedy who resides on it and it appears from this survey that the lot only contains 63 acres and he had 100 as expressed in the Kings Patent. Kennedy states that there is a strip of vacant land immediately in rear of his on the west side of the lot between Bertie and Humberstone and has requested Warren to enquire if he can obtain a part of it to make up the deficiency in his lot.
