Larner/Learn, Peter

On 9 Mar 1795 Peter Larner aged 28, born in Pennsylvania, farmer appeared before John Small and took the prescribed oaths and was recommended for a grant of 200 acres of land. On 10 Mar 1795 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith assigned to him 200 acres in Lots 4 and 5 Concession 14 Bertie Twp. (Bertie Township Papers 0795)

Lutes, George

On 12 Oct 1805 William Stanton, Chief Clerk in the President’s Office wrote to Surveyor General C. B. Wyatt advising he was directed by his honor the President to inform Wyatt that he was permitted to allow George Lutes the son of a U. E. Loyalist to locate Lots 7 and 8 in the third concession of the Township of Bertie containing together two hundred acres when he shall have discharged a certain bond due by him to the Government and of which due notice will be given to Wyatt. On 12 Nov 1805 William Stanton, Chief Clerk in the President’s Office wrote to Surveyor General C. B. Wyatt advising George Lutes took up a certain bond due by him to Government mentioned in his letter of the 12th ult. He is permitted to locate No. 7 and 8 in the third concession of the Township of Bertie. (Bertie Township Papers 0380)

Mabee/Maybe, Lewis

On 20 Nov 1794 Lewis Maybe aged 52, born at the Mohawk River, farmer appeared before John Small and took the prescribed oaths and was recommended for a grant of 200 acres of land. Written in the margin: The bearer Lewis Maybe served last War in Col. Butlers Rangers (Bertie Township Papers 0668)

On 20 Dec 1794 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared a surveyor’s assignment for Lewis Maybee for 200 acres of land in Lots 16 Concessions 8 and 9 from the Niagara River Bertie Twp. These two lots are on the north boundary line of the Township, Black Creek running through them. (Bertie Township Papers 0669)

Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for Lewis Maybe for 200 acres of land in Lot 16 Concessions 8 and 9 from the Niagara River Bertie Twp. (Bertie Township Papers 0671)

On 14 Nov 1800 the Executive Council of Upper Canada gave a grant to Lewis Mabee of Bertie Twp., yeoman for 200 acres of land in Lot 16 and Concessions 8 and 9 from the Niagara River Bertie Twp. (Bertie Township Papers 0672)

On 14 Dec 1805 Surveyor General C. B. Wyatt prepared a surveyor’s assignment for Lewis Mabee of Willoughby Twp., yeoman for 100 acres of land in Lot 16 Concession 7 from the Niagara River Bertie Twp. as per an Order in Council of 10 Dec 1805 to complete his military lands agreeable to the recommendation of the Executive Council on 19 Aug 1795 (Bertie Township Papers 0637)

Marsh, Joseph

On 3 May 1791 the Land Board read the petition of Joseph Marsh for a grant of 200 acres of land in the Township No. above Fort Erie (Bertie) and found him qualified to receive a lot. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to Marsh 200 acres in Lots 16 and 17 Concession 3 of Township No. Fort Erie (Bertie Township Papers 0415)

On 20 Oct 1795 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared a surveyor’s assignment for Joseph Marsh for 200 acres of land in Lots 16 and 17 Concession 3 from Lake Erie Bertie Twp. (Bertie Township Papers 0613)

Maybee, John

On 24 Mar 1795 John Maybee aged 25, born in the State of New York, husbandman appeared before Peter Russell, J.P. and took the prescribed oaths and was recommended for a grant of 200 acres of land. On the same date Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith assigned to Maybee 120 acres in Lot 9 in the front on Niagara River nearly opposite the south end of Grand Island Bertie Twp. Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for John Maybee for 120 acres of land in Lot 9 Front Concession Bertie Twp. nearly opposite the southern end of Grand Island sometimes called the 1st Cross Concession (Bertie Township Papers 0177)

McKenly, Samuel

On 9 Aug 1794 the Land Board read the petition of Samuel McKenly for a grant of 200 acres of land and found him qualified to receive a lot. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him 200 acres in Lots 15 and 16 Concession 10 from the Niagara River of Township of Fort Erie (Bertie Township Papers 0718)

On 9 Aug 1794 the Land Board consented to Lots 15 and 16 Concession 10 from the Niagara River of Township of Fort Erie being transferred to Priscilla Reid, daughter of the deceased John Reid. (Bertie Township Papers 0719)

On 20 Oct 1795 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared a surveyor’s assignment for Samuel McKenly for 200 acres of land in Lots 15 and 16 Concession 10 from the Niagara River Bertie Twp. (Bertie Township Papers 0613)

McQueen, Daniel

On 3 May 1791 the Land Board read the petition of Daniel McQueen for a grant of 200 acres of land in the Township No. Fort Erie (Bertie) and found him qualified to receive a lot. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to McQueen 200 acres in Lot 16 Concessions 1 and 2 in the Township of Fort Erie with the vacant land in front on the Lake above Fort Erie. Moore, John

On 15 Dec 1851 Henry Smith Crown Lands Agent wrote to John Rolph, Commissioner of Crown Lands with the names of persons within his agency who were entitled to patents, having paid in full. (Bertie Township Papers 0273)

1st Daniel Rose appeared to have paid the sixth instalment on 12 Feb 1851 on the south half of Lot 2 Concession 7, Rainham Twp. There appeared however to be a mistake as Mr. Campbell returned Mr. Rose as having paid five instalments and one remaining due and on 12 Feb last he paid an instalment which I returned as the sixth instalment but in the duplicate returned to me, the sixth is altered to five, showing a mistake between Mr. Campbell and the Department. The sale is 4352.

2nd Amos Payett, assignee of Joseph D. Closs assignee of William Jones, the purchaser of the north half of lot no. 0 in the 5th Con of Caistor, I deposited the receipt in full from the late Mr. J. H. Cummings to Amos Payett, in the Crown Land Office, Toronto 8 Nov 1850, and have since forwarded the assignments, duly proved, from William Jones to Joseph D. Closs and from Joseph D. Closs to Amos Payett.

3rd Mr. John Moore, the purchaser of the Gore between lots No 35 in the first and 2nd Concessions of Bertie and Humberstone, sold to him 15 May 1851, the plan of which Smith returned to the Department. He noted Mr. Moore was quite anxious to get the patent as he sold the land and wished to make the transfer deed.

4th David Knisely paid the 10th instalment on Lot No. in the 3rd Concession of Rainham 12 Aug 1851.

5th Michael Lymburner paid in full 19 Sep the east half of No. 4 in the 6th Concession, Caistor.

6th Benjamin Schank, the assignee of James Quinlin the purchaser of Lot NO. 19 in the 6th Concession of Caistor. Smith deposited in the Crown Land Office Toronto the receipt to Schank for £76.4.2 in full payment for said lot, said receipt bearing date 20 Apr 1846 and signed by J. H. Cummings, Agent. Smith deposited the deposit in the Crown Land Office at Toronto 8 Nov 1850, and on casting the interest for the time Smith found it correct. The assignment from James Quinlin to Benjamin Schank appeared mislaid . Smith enclosed the assignment of [….] McLean, the former occupant.

Morris, Joel White

On 18 Feb 1795 Joel White Morris aged 31, born in the State of New Jersie (sic), carpenter and joiner appeared before John Warren J. P. and took the prescribed oaths and was recommended for a grant of 200 acres of land. On 19 Feb 1795 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith assigned to Morris 200 acres in Lots 25 and 26 Broken Front Concession Bertie Twp. on Lake Erie (Bertie Township Papers 0037)
