On 14 Dec 1793 the Land Board read the petition of Johnson Butler for a grant of one-half acre of land in the Town of Newark (Niagara) and found him qualified and assigned to him Lot 38. On 18 Jun 1795 The Executive Council of Upper Canada of Upper Canada read the petition of George Campbell for a Town Lot No. 50 in the Town of Newark and ordered it granted and referred to the Surveyor General. (Niagara Town Papers 0156)

On 18 Jun 1795 The Executive Council of Upper Canada of Upper Canada granted to George Campbell of the Township of Louth Lot No. 50 in the Town of Newark containing half an acre. Patent fee paid 10 December 1818. (Niagara Town Papers 0158)

On 17 Aug 1795 The Executive Council of Upper Canada of Upper Canada read the petition of John Cane stating the petitioner to be possessed of Lot No. 25 in the Township of Newark which was formerly granted to the late James Fitzgerald praying the Council to order the petitioner to be confirmed thereon. On 25 May 1796 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared a surveyor’s assignment for John Cane for one-half acre of land in Lot No. 25 on Prideaux Street in the Town of Newark. (Niagara Town Papers 0170)

On 26 Jun 1795 The Executive Council of Upper Canada read the petition of William Carver praying for Lot No. 228 in the Town of Newark. The Council ordered that the prayer of the petition be granted and referred to the Surveyor General for Canada. (Niagara Town Papers 1195)

On 22 May 1798 The Executive Council of Upper Canada of Upper Canada gave a grant to Samuel Casady of the Town of Newark for one-half acre in Lot No. 41 in the Township of Newark. (Niagara Town Papers 0176)

On 18 Oct 1801 Ralfe Clench wrote at the request of Mr. John Clement to send a certificate stating who is entered for Lot No. 41 in the Town of Niagara it being a lot that was sold by Samuel Cassada to Andrew Templeton and by him to John Clement who has a good house now on it and Andrew Cassada understanding that the deed is not yet issued, the land commission will open for the last time. On 27 May 1804 William Lyons wrote to Acting Surveyor General Thomas Ridout requesting a search of Lot 7 in the Town of Niagara that he may lay it before the commissioners at their next setting in this place which will be on the 7th of June. On 15 Oct 1818 George Miller wrote to Surveyor General Thomas Ridout stating he was directed by the Lieutenant Governor to locate George Chapman, an emigrant settler from Ireland on Lot No. 407 in the Town of Niagara and describe the land in the usual manner with as little delay as possible. On 5 Jul 1799 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared a surveyor’s assignment for William Chewett (a transfer) for two acres of land in Lots No. 213 and 214 in the Town of Newark. Chrysler, John

On 4 Nov 1803 The Executive Council of Upper Canada of Upper Canada gave a grant to ­­­­­Archibald Cunningham transferred by Jos. Robinson for Lot No. 36 in the Township of Newark (Niagara) as per an Order of Council dated 23 Apr 1799. (Niagara Town Papers 0302)

On 5 Nov 1800 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith wrote to the Solicitor General enclosing an Order of Council granting to Archibald Cunningham Lot No. 36 in Newark—transferred by Robinson. A description of this land has passed his office to Joseph Brown and John Christie as transferees of Joseph Robinson upon a Land Board Certificate of Mr. Jones 28 Jun 1790. In case the deed was not prepared, the intention of the Council to Mr. Cunningham may be made effective. (Niagara Town Papers 0304)

On 2 Apr 1801 Archibald Cunningham wrote to Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith stating he never drew any land in Newark or any part of the province (the 1200 in Burford excepted. The lots he owns in Niagara 11 and 36 were originally granted to Joseph Robinson, sold by him to John Chrysler and Joseph Brown and by them to me. Robinson had a separate Land Board Certificate for each lot and Cunningham had them transferred in his own name. One of the originals for 36 was given in to Mr. White February 1793 and by some mistake afterwards both came to Smith’s office and the description for 36 was put in the name of Chrysler and Brown. Smith advised Cunningham it could not be otherwise, their Certificate being prior in date to his and that to have it allowed he must petition the Council. Cunningham did so and the Solicitor General succeeded in the application. No. 39 he purchased from Peter Clow and had transferred by the Land Board Certificate. Smith advised him as far back ass 22 Nov 1797 the description had passed Smith’s office. The Solicitor General informed him after repeated searching no trace of it could be found. The patent for No. 11 has come out in his name, but it was actually a purchase. Mr. Hamilton was the gentleman who paid the price of the four lots on his account. Signed by Archibald Cunningham. Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for Archibald Cunningham for 116 acres of land in Lot No. 11 and broken front in the Township of Newark as per a Land Board Certificate dated 12 Apr 1792—No. 36 has been described No. 4612 for Joseph Robinson, under an assignment the 28 Jun 1790 and transferred to Joseph Brown and John Chrysler—Joseph Robinson’s name was on the Quebec Plan for No. 11. Clarke, James, Esquire

On 27 Jan 1795 Peter Russell wrote to the Acting Surveyor General that it appears from a certificate signed by Mr. Muirhead the Town Warden, that James Clarke Esq. has improved Lot No. 193 in the Town of Newark (Niagara) agreeable to his engagement with the Land Board of this District, and there being no existing authority since the disposition of that Board, under which the Surveyor can grant an assignment of the said Lot, Russell took it upon himself to assign the said lot No. 193 to the said James Clarke Esq. On 14 Mar 1797 The Executive Council of Upper Canada of Upper Canada gave a grant to ­­­­­Mrs. Catharine Claus of Niagara, wife of Colonel William Claus, Deputy Superintendent of Indian Affairs, for 1,200 acres. (Niagara Town Papers 0198)

On 13 May 1797 The Executive Council of Upper Canada of Upper Canada gave a grant to ­­­­­Mrs. Catharine Claus of the Town of York, wife of the Honorable Colonel William Claus a town lot in the Town of Niagara patent fee and survey paid 28 Sep 1816. (Niagara Town Papers 0196)

On 15 Nov 1816 Edward MacMahon, Secretary wrote to Surveyor General Thomas Ridout stating in compliance with the application of the Honorable William Claus, the Lieutenant Governor rescinded the order of location of the town lots in Niagara in the names of William Claus, Esqr., Mrs. Catharine Claus, and Mrs. Ann Claus, numbered 123, 124 and 130, and to permit him to locate in lieu thereof the Lots Nos. 100, 331 and 332. Clench of the Town of Niagara, gentleman for one acre in Lot No. 200 on the south side of Center Street in the limit between Lots No. 199 and 200 in the Town of Newark (Niagara) as per an Order in Council dated 19 Feb 1818. Clench, Ralfe

Crooks, Francis

On 7 Dec 1793 the Land Board read the petition of Francis Crooks for a grant of half an acre of land in the Town of Newark (Niagara) and found him qualified and assigned to him Town Lot 278. (Niagara Town Papers 0276)

On 15 Feb 1799 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith wrote to Administrator Peter Russell concerning the joint petition of Auldjo and Maitland, James Clark Senr., Elizabeth Crooks, William Crooks and James Crooks. By a return from the Council Office received 11 May 1795 Francis Crooks is returned for the lot of ground in the Town of Newark (Niagara) mentioned in the letter of attorney and called No. 1. By the same return James Crooks appears to be returned for Lot No. 63 in the said Town. The farms called No. 17 and 30 in the Township of Newark were originally located to Richard Wilkinson transferred from him to Colonel Butler and from him to Mr Crooks. Mr. Francis Crooks has also 1200 acres of land in the Township of Windham. (Niagara Town Papers 0064)

On 1 Feb 1830 John Crooks wrote a letter to the Surveyor General stating Lot 92 in the Town of Niagara is vacant, and not knowing who to apply for it, he took the liberty of addressing the Surveyor General to ask the proper mode and to whom he should apply. (Niagara Town Papers 0299)

The lots he owns in Niagara 11 and 36 were originally granted to Joseph Robinson, sold by him to John Chrysler and Joseph Brown and by them to me. Robinson had a separate Land Board Certificate for each lot and Cunningham had them transferred in his own name. One of the originals for 36 was given in to Mr. White February 1793 and by some mistake afterwards both came to Smith’s office and the description for 36 was put in the name of Chrysler and Brown. Smith advised Cunningham it could not be otherwise, their Certificate being prior in date to his and that to have it allowed he must petition the Council. Cunningham did so and the Solicitor General succeeded in the application. No. 39 he purchased from Peter Clow and had transferred by the Land Board Certificate. Smith advised him as far back ass 22 Nov 1797 the description had passed Smith’s office. The Solicitor General informed him after repeated searching no trace of it could be found. The patent for No. 11 has come out in his name, but it was actually a purchase. Mr. Hamilton was the gentleman who paid the price of the four lots on his account. Signed by Archibald Cunningham. Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for Archibald Cunningham for 116 acres of land in Lot No. 11 and broken front in the Township of Newark as per a Land Board Certificate dated 12 Apr 1792—No. 36 has been described No. 4612 for Joseph Robinson, under an assignment the 28 Jun 1790 and transferred to Joseph Brown and John Chrysler—Joseph Robinson’s name was on the Quebec Plan for No. 11.
