Gander, Jacob

On 6 Feb 1795 Jacob Gander aged 19, born in Pennsylvania, farmer, appeared before John Small and took the prescribed oaths and was recommended for 200 acres of land. On 2 Jun 1805 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith assigned to Jacob Gander 200 acres in Lot 15 Concession 4 Humberstone Twp. (Humberstone Township Papers 0518)

On 5 Jan 1796 Thomas Kinsey certified that Lot 15 Concession 4 taken up by Jacob Gandar (sic) is to the greatest part all wet and not fit for tillage. (Humberstone Township Papers 0520)

On 9 Aug 1796 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith gave to Jacob Gander a survey for 200 acres in Lot 15 Concession 4 Humberstone Twp. (Humberstone Township Papers 0522)

Gould, Adam

On 19 Nov 1840 Robert B Sullivan, Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote to John Lyons Esq. requesting he send Militia right number 1106 for 100 acres in favour of John Campbell assigned to Samuel Street in order that he may have the former assigned to Peter Grady the purchaser of 26 acres in the north part of Lot 21 Concession 2 Humberstone Twp. Sullivan also requested the UE right number 1104 for 200 acres in favour of Adam Gould also assigned to Samuel Street then to John McLaughlin the purchaser of the south part of Lot 9 Concession 8 Crowland Twp. Grady, Peter

On 14 Feb 1840 Peter Grady gave a mortgage to Samuel Street on 26 acres in the north end of Lot 21 Concession 2 Humberstone Twp. for twelve pounds ten shillings which was to be paid to John Lyons, Esquire. Peter Garvey promised to repay Street with legal interest in six months and gave him the government deed to the lot as security. At the bottom of the document Street wrote Peter Garvey has paid 12.10.0 and 7 shillings interest this 7 Jul 1840 (Humberstone Township Papers 0289)

Gregory, John

Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith gave and undated survey to Daniel Forsyth for 200 acres and to John Gregory 200 acres as per easement transferred to Daniel Forsyth total 400 acres in Lots 4 and 5 Concession 1, Humberstone Twp. (Humberstone Township Papers 0023)


Griffin, Benjamin

On 30 Apr 1795 Benjamin Griffin aged 34 years appeared before Dan Millard J.P. and took the prescribed oaths and was recommended for 200 acres in Lot 10 Concession 4 Humberstone Twp. (Humberstone Township Papers 0481)

On 21 Oct 1796 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith gave s survey to Benjamin Griffin for Lot 10 Concession 4 Humberstone Twp. (Humberstone Township Papers 0480)


Harp, Edward

On 8 Jan 1795 Edward Harp, thirty-one years of age, born in the Township of Rochester, New York, farmer, appeared before John Warren, J. P. and took the prescribed oaths. He was recommended to receive 200 acres of land. Added Note: Harp has taken Lot 6 First Concession in the Township East of Sugar Loaf [Humberstone] (Humberstone Township Papers 0032)

On 23 Jan 1795 Acting Surveyor General D W Smith gave a surveyor ticket and survey to Edward Harp for 200 acres in Lot 6 Concession 1 Humberstone Twp. (Humberstone Township Papers 0034, 0036)

On 9 Aug 1796 Acting Surveyor General D W Smith gave a description of patent to Edward Harp for Lot 6 Concession 1 Humberstone Twp. (Humberstone Township Papers 0038)

Harrison, Joseph

On 18 Oct 1794 the Land Board ordered a grant to Joseph Harrison for 200 acres of land. The Acting Surveyor General D W Smith wrote in the margin Lot 20 Concession 1 Humberstone Twp. On a second document dated 18 Oct 1794 the Land Board consented to the transfer of the lot from Joseph Harrison to Jonathan Kenzie. The Administrator Peter Russell noted on 2 May 1797 this was permitted to be located to Jonathan Kinsey as part of the 500 acres granted to him (Humberstone Township Papers 0148, 0150)

Acting Surveyor General D W Smith filed a land transfer document from Joseph Harrison to Jonathan Kenzie and described the boundaries of the lot. Added order of the Land Board to Harrison on 18 Oct 1794 their transfer the same day to Kenzie as part of his 500 acre grant (Humberstone Township Papers 0151)

Havens, Joseph

On 3 May 1791 Joseph Havens was given a certificate of the Land Board for family lands and additional bounty lands totalling 200 acres in Township Number 3 Humberstone as a Loyalist for his wife and children. Augustus Jones, Acting Surveyor assigned to him 200 acres in Lot 4 Concession 2 Humberstone Twp. Acting Surveyor D. W. Smith authorized the settlement on 29 Jun 1795 (Humberstone Township Papers 0232)

On 4 May 1796 Joseph Havens wrote concerning Lot 18 Concession 4 Humberstone Twp. Signed by Joseph Hanens. (Humberstone Township Papers 0526)

Hawn, Matthias

On 6 Nov 1824 J. Robinson, Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote he found notice in the Upper Canada Gazette “That unless Matthias Hawn or his heirs do make good to lot No. 17 in 1 Con. of Humberstone in the Niagara Dr. within three months & the said lot will be sold.” Richardson noted the lot named in the advertisement is still Crown property. Haun, Wilson

On 28 Feb 1837 Wilson Haun deeded to Samuel Street 251 acres Lot 17 Concession 1 Humberstone Twp. to be held in security for thirty-two pounds owed by Haun on 66-1/2 acres in the north or rear end of Lot 17 formerly belonging to Henry Warren Esq. The land was to be reconveyed to Haun on payment of the debt. (Humberstone Township Papers 0134)

On 6 Nov 1845 Wilson Haun authorized the trustees of Samuel Street to convey the premises to John Whiteman for which he had received full consideration (Humberstone Township Papers 0135)


Heisy

In a letter dated at Hillsboro, Plympton dated on17 Dec 1866 George Hart, J. P. wrote to Andrew Russell, Commissioner of Crown Lands asking if the south half of Lot 12 Concession 4 Humberstone Twp. was available for purchase. He noted that one Heisy squatted on the land several years earlier and had died but his widow lived on the land at present. (Humberstone Township Papers 0513)

House, Frederick

On 20 Apr 1795 Frederick House, aged 23, born in the State of New York, farmer appeared before Parshall Terry, J. P. And tooke the prescribed oath and was recommended for two hundred acres of land. On 23 Apr 1795 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith assigned to Frederick House 20 acres in Lot 4 Concessin 3 Humberstone Twp. (Humberstone Township Papers 0362)

On 21 Oct 1796 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith gave a survey to Frederick House for 200 acres in Lot 4 Concession 3 Humberstone Twp. (Humberstone Township Papers 0361)

House, James

On 10 Jan 1797 Daniel Forsyth wrote to the Surveyor General`s Office saying he has no claim to 200 acres in the rear half of Lots 4 and 5 Concession 2 Township of Sugar Loaf East (or Humberstone) by way of transference from John Gregory. That land belongs to James House (Humberstone Township Papers 0236)

On 23 Jun 1853 Dexter D’Everardo, Registrar of Welland wrote a letter to the Commissioner of Crown Grants requesting a description of the land granted to James House and Lewis Mabee in Lot 4 Broken Front Concession Humberstone Twp. (Humberstone Township Papers 0030)

On 5 Dec 1853 Zenas Fell, Public Land Surveyor submitted a survey plan and description and certified an ungranted part of Lot 9 Concession 1 Humberstone Twp. noting it to be occupied by Abraham and Nicholas Michael whose grandfather Nicholas Michael who in 1827 purchased it and began clearing the land. It was now all cleared except five acres. He noted the nearby Lewis Mabee 70 acre grant had no improvements and was covered by a Black Ash swamp. Another fifty acres granted to James House was then in 1840 conveyed to and occupied by Jacob Bearss (Humberstone Township Papers 0079)

Hunt, Edward

On 23 Mar 1795 Dan Millard J. P. Certified that Edward Hunt of Humberstone Twp. thirty-[three] years of age, born in New York, weaver, appeared before him and took the prescribed oaths, and was recommended for a grant of 200 acres of land. Entered in the Council of Upper Canada Office 12 Nov 1795 by John Small (Humberstone Township Papers 0103)

On 12 Nov 1795 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith gave a certificate to Edward Hunt for 180 acres in Lot 11 Concession 1 Humberstone Twp. (Humberstone Township Papers 0102)

On 7 Feb 1797 Edward Hunt wrote to Acting Surveyor General David Smith asking to be entered down on Lot 16 first or front Concession. He noted there were twenty acres commencing on the first lot. Hunt expected to have one lot more. He should have spoke for this lot but [Toskuay] Dell has taken a lot which he had in visible possession for four years and “I dounot know as I Can Recover that again unless I stand at loss if thare is aney way to recover that I should be glad to know it lot 11 in the 2 Con the Run of my present. I am Sorrow to lose it. I Sarved my King Arms fully five years for the saim. If thair is noway to hold No 11 in the 2 con Set me Down 16 in the first. Thair is about 20 acers of dry land in it and the is ma[r]sh. I expect to Come Down in the Spring to know how much land I shall have…” Signed Edward Hunt [0012]

In a letter received on 13 Feb 1797, Edward Hunt requested Acting Surveyor General David Smith to grant him 20 acres in Lot 11 Concession 2 Humberstone Township. which has been in his possession for four years.
