On 12 Feb 1831 George Macan made application to purchase Crown Land in Lot 212 in the Town of Niagara. Note of William Chewett, Acting Surveyor General dated 21 Mar 1731: One acre is entered in the handwriting of the late Surveyor General Mr. Ridout in the name of Silas Cook but the authority is not to be found, probably a certificate from the Land Board of the district in 1794 or 1795. McDonell, Donald

Donald McDonell wrote an undated letter to Acting Surveyor General David Wm. Smith stating Mr. Dickson, having purchased his Lot Number 253 in the Town of Newark, should he have an inclination to change it for another unappropriated lot he has my sanction. (Niagara Town Papers 0348)

On 26 May 1798 William Dickson wrote to Acting Surveyor General David William Smith Esquire stating Donald McDonell who listed in the Volunteers had a Town Lot No. 253 which he has sold to Dickson and has since deserted. He asked that the Attorney General withhold the deed until he gets the consent of The Executive Council of Upper Canada to have the deed made out in his own name. (Niagara Town Papers 0358)

On 20 Jul 1820 a Committee of The Executive Council of Upper Canada reported on the petition of John Holmes and others for confirmation to the heirs of Alexander Rogers the Lot 52 Niagara. The Committee referring to a former petition perceived that it had been reported by the Surveyor General vacant and grantable and one John McKay the original nominee on the plan of Newark (Niagara) had received another lot by patent. An order was made the 15th October last to trustees for [ans]. It appears that the original location in the plans to J. McKay must have been made prior to 1795. He had sold the same and by bona fide transfer it came into the hands of A. Rogers for £50 and that thereupon during a possession of many years he had erected two houses of the value of £500 at least. The Committee submitted that it may be acknowledged as the original location of John McKay since deceased to be claimed by the heirs of Alexander Rogers. (Niagara Town Papers 0948)

McMichael, Isaac

Locations made in the Surveyor General’s Office the 18 Oct 1803: John Stuart of Niagara, tailor Lot No. 115 Town of Niagara made conditionally that the title of Isaac McMichael appears at York. By a return from the Council Office dated the 11 May 1795. Isaac McMichael is stated to be entered for this lot, upon the old plan of the town but when an inquiry was made in the latter end of the summer of 1795 of the improvements in the town it was found that John Hay had built upon the lot and occupied the same. No authority for passing the descriptions to either of those persons has been lodged in the Surveyor General’s Office. (Niagara Town Papers 1030)
