Carl, Jonas

On 18 Oct 1794 the Land Board read the petition of Jonas Carl for a grant of 200 acres of land and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. At the bottom of the page is noted No. 7. 1 & 2 Cons Willoughby on the R. Niagara. (Willoughby Township Papers 0124)

On 8 Aug 1796 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared a surveyor’s assignment for Jonas Carl for 210 acres of land in Lot 7 Concessions 1 and 2 Willoughby Twp. with broken front Willoughby Twp. (Willoughby Township Papers 0127)


Colerick, Peter

On 25 May 1796 Peter Colerick certified he had no claim on Lot 5 in front on the River of Niagara in the Township of Willoughby and never received a certificate for the same. His name has been entered on the plan thereof by mistake. Signed Peter Colerick, witnessed by surveyor Thomas Ridout. (Willoughby Township Papers 0117)

On 7 Jul 1798 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared a surveyor’s assignment for Samuel Street for 800 acres of land transferred from Philip Stedman, Nathan Wheeler, Peter Aster, George Scarlet, D Wm. Johnston, Samuel Cox, Peter Colerick and Peter Larraway being part of 1200 acres granted personally to the said Samuel Street Esquire in Lots 18, 19, 20 and part of 21, 22, 23 Concession 1 with the broken fronts 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23 and Lots 19 and 20 in the Second Concession Willoughby Twp. plus other lands totalling about 4600 acres (Willoughby Township Papers 0190)


Conway, Patrick

On 3 May 1791 the Land Board read the petition of Patrick Conway for a grant of 200 acres of landing Township No. Fort Erie and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him 100 acres in Lot 4 Cross Concession No. 2 in the Township of No. 2 Fort Erie (sic: Willoughby Twp.) Note on the reverse from the Land Board : Patrick Conway has permission to transfer this certificate for Lot No. 4 Township of Fort Erie to Lewis Maby. (Willoughby Township Papers 0060, 0062)

Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for Patrick Conway for 90 acres of land in Lot 4 (now called 13) in the front Cross Concession Willoughby Twp. (Willoughby Township Papers 0058)


Cox, Samuel

On 7 Jul 1798 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Cummings, Thomas

On 12 Apr 1792 the Land Board read the petition of Thomas Cummings for a grant of 200 acres of land in Township No. 1 above Chippeway and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith for Augustus Jones who assigned to him 200 acres in Lots 21 and 22 Concession 2 in the Township No. 1 above Chippeway with broken lands in front. On 16 Aug 1794 the Land Board read the petition of Philip Stedman for a grant and obtained a certificate for two hundred acres in Township No. 1 above Chipawa and referred it to the Surveyor General. The Land Board consented that Philip Stedman may transfer the above lots to Thomas Cummings. (Willoughby Township Papers 0210)

Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for Thomas Cummings for about 438 acres of land in Lots 21 and 22 Concession 2 and parts of Lots 21 and 22 Concession 1 Willoughby Twp. with the broken fronts. (Willoughby Township Papers 0212)

On 27 Apr 1795, John Warren J. P., John Powell J. P. and Parshall Terry J. P. certified that Lots 10 and 11 Concession 1 Willoughby Twp. lying on the River between Black Creek and Fort Chippawa now occupied by James Brown and Thomas Cummings, never were owned or occupied by Christian Jacobs. The first men that began to work and improve said lots were a Christian Duggan and Jeremiah Gregory. Duggan disposed of his improvement to James Brown, and Gregory having absconded to avoid being brought to justice for theft, his creditors obtained leave to dispose of his improvement, which was purchased by Mr. Cummings. The creditors were satisfied. The writers believed Moses, the son of said Gregory, now being with Mr. Weishuhn, received something besides. The writers were well acquainted with the improvements made by Christian Jacobs. The first was made on the Lot number five in the Township of Bertie on the River which is now occupied by Cornelius Bowen. His other improvements were made three miles up the Chippawa on the north side. They are now owned by John McEwen but as to his ever having any right or claim to the Lots 10 and 11, the writers were confident is a mistake. (Willoughby Township Papers 0143)

On 25 Aug 1799 Thomas Cummings wrote to Acting Surveyor General Thomas Ridout saying he had a lot of land in the Township of Willoughby about five miles from the mouth of Chippawa up the river which he believed the number of the lot is 11 in the first and second concession and requesting s description of it sent to the Attorney General that a deed may be procured for him. On 12 Sep 1799 Thomas Cummings wrote to Acting Surveyors General Chewett and Ridout stating the warrant now in their office covers the 200 acres of land in the Township of Willoughby also 200 acres on Youngs Street near Lake Simcoe Lot 110. [Acting Surveyor General D. W.] Smith entered him for that lot saying that the creek was navigable from thence to Lake Simcoe. He noted no fees of office were due on any part of the land that he was entitled to from Government. They either come under the head of military land or under the U. E. List. He requested the description of Lots 11 in the first and second concession in the Township of Willoughby forwarded so he could receive a deed in the course of a few days. Dell, Basnet

On 12 Mar 1792 the Land Board read the petition of “Barsnet” Dell for a grant of 200 acres of land in Township No. 1 above Chippeway and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him 200 acres in Lots 15 and 16 Concession 7 in the Township No. 1 above Chipp. now Willoughby read 2 May 1797, permitted P. Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for Basnet Dell Junr. for 200 acres of land in Lots 15 and 16 Concession 7 Willoughby Twp. as per Land Board Certificate of 12 Mar 1792. Appended Note: No. 16 was formerly entered to Jonathan Kensey by mistake but now rectified upon his affirmation. (Willoughby Township Papers 0373)


Dell, Nathaniel

On 12 Mar 1792 the Land Board read the petition of Nathaniel Dell for a grant of 200 acres of land and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land in the Township No. 1 above Chippeway. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him 200 acres in Lots 7 and 8 front on Chippeway in the Township No. 1 (Willoughby Township) (Willoughby Township Papers 0032)

Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for Nathaniel Dell for 200 acres of land in Lots 7 and 8 front Concession on the River Welland Willoughby Twp. (Willoughby Township Papers 0035)

On 29 Apr 1797 Nathaniel Dill appeared before John Rielly, J. P. and deposed that he never had a grant for any lands in this province except two lots of one hundred acres each being No. 7 and 8 in the Township of Willoughby for which the deponent has received a land board certificate and which certificate he returned into the Surveyor General’s Office. Nathaniel Dill made his mark and John Rielly, J. P. signed (Willoughby Township Papers 0037)


Dell, William

On 12 Mar 1792 the Land Board read the petition of William Dell for a grant of 200 acres of land and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land in the Township No. 1 above Chippeway. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him 200 acres in Lots 9 and 10 front on Chippeway in the Township No. 1 (Willoughby Township) (Willoughby Township Papers 0045)

Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for William Dell for 200 acres of land in Lots 9 and 10 Concession 1 fronting on the River Welland Willoughby Twp. as per Land Board Certificate dated 12 Mar 1792. Acting Surveyor General’s Note: No. 9 formerly entered to Jonathan Kinsay by mistake, but now certified upon his affirmation. (Willoughby Township Papers 0043)


Doe, John

Record of the Kings Bench District of Niagara dated 15 Jun 1827: Richard Roe was attached to and [….] to John Doe of a plea wherefore he the said Richard Roe with force and arms entered into Lots number fourteen and fifteen in the fifth concession of the Township of Willoughby… four messages, four cottages, four barns, four gardens, four orchards, four hundred acres of arable land, four hundred acres of meadow land, four hundred acres of pasture and four hundred acres of wood land and four hundred acres of other land situate and being in the Township of Willoughby which Samuel Street and James Cummings heir at law of Thomas Cummings deceased had demised to the said John Doe… other wrongs to the said John Doe then and there did the great damage of the said John Doe and against the peace of our Lord the King and thereupon the said John Doe by Robert Dickson his attorney complains that whereas the said Samuel Street and James Cummings on the first day of March in the eighth year of the reign of our Lord the King had demised the said tenements with the appurtenances to the said John Doe for the term of ten years and being so possessed the said Richard Roe afterwards on the second day of March in the year aforesaid with force and arms entered into the said premises and ejected the said John Doe from his said farm… damage to the amount of two hundred pounds and therefore he brings his suit. Dugan, James

On 3 May 1791 the Land Board read the petition of James Dugan for a grant of 200 acres of land in Township No. 1 above Chippeway Creek and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him 200 acres in Lots 12 and 13 Concession 2 in the Township No. 1 above Chipp. (Willoughby Township). On the reverse is noted by the Land Board under date of 6 Jun 1791, James Dugan having had permission to sell his lands to John McEwen. That sale is hereby confirmed by the Land board and John McEwan’s name is directed to stand in place of said James Dugan’s. (Willoughby Township Papers 0203, 205)
