Secord, David

On 7 Dec 1793 the Land Board read the petition of David Secord for a grant of one acre of land in the Town of Newark (Niagara) and found him qualified and assigned to him Town Lot 64. Added note of the Land Board: The Land Board consent to the transfer of the within Lot No. 64 in the Town of Newark from David “Seacord” to William Dickson. (Niagara Town Papers 0967, 0968)

Secord, Peter Sr.

On 7 Dec 1793 the Land Board read the petition of Peter Secord Senr. for a grant of one acre of land in the Town of Newark (Niagara) and found him qualified and assigned to him Town Lot 62. Added note of the Land Board: The Land Board consent to the transfer of the within Lot No. 62 in the Town of Newark from Peter Secord Senr. to William Dickson. (Niagara Town Papers 0976, 0977)

On 7 Dec 1793 the Land Board read the petition of Stephen Secord for a grant of one acre of land in the Town of Newark (Niagara) and found him qualified and assigned to him Town Lot 2. On 31 Jan 1816 Surveyor General Thomas Ridout prepared a surveyor’s assignment for William Street Servos of the Township of Niagara, gentleman for one acre of land in Lot No. 138 on the northerly side of Gage Street in the Town of Niagara under an Order in Council dated 27 Jan 1816. Sewell, Henry

On 7 Jan 1851 Henry Smith, Crown Lands Agent for the Counties of Lincoln, Welland and Haldimand gave a receipt to Henry Sewell for two pounds one shilling currency, being the first instalment on Clergy Reserve Lot number 267 in the Town of Niagara containing one acre sold to him for the sum of twenty pounds ten shillings currency upon condition of paying one tenth of the purchase money down and the remainder in nine annual instalments with interest on each instalment as it becomes due, the first of which instalments to fall due and be payable on the first day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty-two. On 6 Jun 1851 Henry Sewell of Niagara, carpenter sold for twenty pounds ten shillings to William Bowers Winterbottom of the same place, Esquire Lot No. 267 in the Town of Niagara. Signed Henry Sewell. Witnessed by Isaac Henry Johnson, W. Claus. (Niagara Town Papers 1169)

Slack, John

On 26 Oct 1795 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for John Slack for half an acre of land in Lot No. 74 in the Town of Newark. (Niagara Town Papers 0392)

On 26 Oct 1795 Ralfe Clench attested John Slack has improved on Lot No. 24 in the Town of Newark containing half an acre. He has built a good dwell house. (Niagara Town Papers 0393)

On 26 Oct 1795 Peter Russell, Executive Councillor wrote to Acting Surveyor General David W. Smith Esq. that the bearer John Slack, shoemaker by trade and born in His Majesty’s Dominions is recommended for an assignment of Lot 24 in the Town of Newark on which it appears he has made an improvement agreeable to his contract with the late Land Board. On 4 Nov 1803 The Executive Council of Upper Canada of Upper Canada read the petition of ­­­­­Widow Sparbanks stating she is desirous of building in the Town of Newark and praying for Lot No. 276. On 12 Aug 1796 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared a surveyor’s assignment for Richard Springer for Lot No. 160 in the Town of Newark. (Niagara Town Papers 1014)


Stevenson, John Andrew

On 5 Sep 1818 The Executive Council of Upper Canada of Upper Canada read the petition of John Stevenson of the Township of Niagara, a native of Ireland, granted a Town Lot in the Town of Niagara on 22 Jul 1818, and now praying for permission to be located on Lot No. 410. It appears that the words “Chief Justice” are inserted on the said Lot on the Surveyor General’s map with a stroke of the pen drawn through the same. The words mean Chief Justice Elmsley who is long since dead and in whose name a description has issued. It is ordered that the words “Chief Justice” be erased and that the said lot be granted to John Stevenson. (Niagara Town Papers 1017)

On 23 Oct 1818 Surveyor General Thomas Ridout prepared a surveyor’s assignment for John Andrew Stevenson of the Town of Niagara, gentleman for Lot No. 5 in the Town of Niagara under the Order in Council of 22 Jul 1818. (Niagara Town Papers 1025)

On 6 Mar 1821 the Executive Council of Upper Canada read the petition of Ebenezer Whiting of Woodhouse, watchmaker setting forth that in the year 1794 he purchased from Henry Weishuhn Lot No. 5 in the Town of Niagara, that he built a dwelling house thereon in which for a number of years he carried on his business, that in the year 1799 his private affairs requiring his absence from this Province, he leased the said premises at £64 New York Currency per annum, that he left the transfer and other papers connected therewith in the hands of James Secord of Queenston by whom they were lost during the late War, that the petitioner returned to this Province in the year 1819, when he found that the said house was burnt by the enemy, and that the said lot had been granted to John Andrew Stephenson. Whiting prayed for relief. The Council read also the report of the Surveyor general thereon dated 5th March 1831. The Executive Council ordered on the petition of Ebenezer Whiting that the lot claimed by him under H. Weishuhn is actually under grant to Mr. Stephenson under special order in Council of 22nd October 1818, but petitioner was not the original nominee. (Niagara Town Papers 1132)

On 1 Sep 1797 The Executive Council of Upper Canada of Upper Canada gave a grant to Alexander Stewart, Esquire for one acre in Lot No. 97 in the Town of Niagara under Order in Council dated 9 May 1797. (Niagara Town Papers 1044)

On 2 Sep 1804 The Executive Council of Upper Canada of Upper Canada leased to Alexander Stewart, Esquire of the Town of Niagara Lots No. 83, 84, 85 and 86 in the Town of Niagara, Clergy Reserves, the lease to be twenty-one years at the yearly rent of one dollar for each town lot. The lease to bear date of 8th December 1803. (Niagara Town Papers 1035)

On 14 Feb 1804 Acting Surveyors General Chewett and Ridout prepared a surveyor’s assignment for a lease to Alexander Stewart of the Town of Niagara for the Clergy Reserves in Lots No. 83, 84, 85 and 86 in the Town of Niagara. The lease to be for twenty-one years at the yearly rent of one dollar for each town lot for which the sum of one pound is the annual rent. Order in Council of 7 Feb 1804. (Niagara Town Papers 1046)

On 2 Jul 1817 D. Cameron, Secretary wrote His Honor the Administrator is pleased to permit Alexander Stewart to locate the Lot No. 182 in the Town of Niagara provided the same is vacant. (Niagara Town Papers 1048)


Stewart, John

On 20 Mar 1800 John Hays sold to Charles Fields of the Town of West Niagara the house formerly occupied by Capt. Tacheston with ten pounds New York Currency. Hayes will make over Lot 115 and the improvements thereon. John Hays and Judy Hays made their marks witnessed by Charles Fields and Rosana Fields (her mark). Isaac McMichal original nominee proved to have sold to John Hay who sells to Charles Field who sells to John Stewart and allowed to John Stewart. (Niagara Town Papers 0473)

On 2 Aug 1802 Charles Fields issued a receipt to Mr. John Stewart for the sum of thirty-two pounds NYC on account of Lot No. one hundred and fifteen in Niagara sold to John Stewart. Signed Charles Fields. (Niagara Town Papers 1028)

Locations made in the Surveyor General’s Office the 18 Oct 1803: John Stuart of Niagara, tailor Lot No. 115 Town of Niagara made conditionally that the title of Isaac McMichael appears at York. By a return from the Council Office dated the 11 May 1795. Isaac McMichael is stated to be entered for this lot, upon the old plan of the town but when an inquiry was made in the latter end of the summer of 1795 of the improvements in the town it was found that John Hay had built upon the lot and occupied the same. No authority for passing the descriptions to either of those persons has been lodged in the Surveyor General’s Office. (Niagara Town Papers 1030)

On 10 Dec 1803 Acting Surveyors General Chewett and Ridout prepared a surveyor’s assignment for John Stewart of the Town of Niagara, tailor for one acre in Lot No. 115 on Johnson Street in the Town of Niagara under 2nd Claim Niagara Commission in Sep 1803, original nominee Isaac McMichael. Stoan, William

On 18 Jun 1795 The Executive Council of Upper Canada of Upper Canada read the petition of William Stoan praying for Lot No. 188 in the Town of Newark (Niagara). The Council ordered that the same be granted. (Niagara Town Papers 1037)

On 22 Aug 1795 William Stoan authorized George Keefer to build and improve on Lot No. 188 in the Town of Newark “which doth satisfy and arrangement unto me Wm. Sloan by his Excellency John G Simcoe and that the said Geo. Keefer to Receive a Title when the same is issued in my name for said Lot to be Transferred unto him.” (Niagara Town Papers 1038)

Swayze, Isaac

On 5 Jul 1799 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared a surveyor’s assignment for William Chewett (a transfer) for two acres of land in Lots No. 213 and 214 in the Town of Newark. Added note: The Attorney General will please return the description formerly made out for these lots to Isaac Swayze and George Mains. (Niagara Town Papers 0189)


Symington, John

On 22 May 1810 John Symington wrote from Niagara to Acting Surveyor General William Chewett that sometime since he purchased the Lot No. 46 in this town of Robert Thompson who was to procure the King’s deed for the same, but which still remains undone. He asked if a description has issued and if it is probable that the patent will be made in his name. Note at the bottom possibly written by Chewett: Description for the above Lot has issue to Robert Thompson (No. 5996) and which was sent it is supposed to the late Attorney General White’s Office in 97, 8 or 9.
