Stamford Township Papers "T-V"

Thomas, John

On 1 Jun 1811 Isaac Swayze wrote to Surveyor General Thomas Ridout concerning Lots 183 and 81 Stamford Twp. and found there was no improvement on 183. There appears to be a small corner of John Thomas`field adjoining it, perhaps one acre improved and the same quantity on Frederick Lantman`s (sic) field. I have not seen Mr. Lantman, but Mr. Thomas says he has no claim to it. Swayze requested the lots be located as soon as possible to prevent others from doing so. (Stamford Township Papers 0380)

On 3 Jul 1811 Thomas Dickson wrote to Surveyor General Thomas Ridout that John Mucklehone of Stamford came to Dickson a few days ago and mentioned he had been over at York to endevour to obtain a grant for his farm Lots 70 and 80 in Stamford and as there appears to be some mistake or difficulty in arranging his matters he came to Dickson with his neighbour Thomas to state how they are situated. Dickson found that John Thomas bought Lot No. 81from James Nevils, and go a transfer from the original deed for Lot No. 80 by mistake. Thomas lives on Lot 81 and has very valuable improvements thereon. Lots No. 70 on which Lampmans name is, and No. 80 on which Nevels name is, are the two lots surveyed by Allan McDonell in 1786 by order of Major Campbell for which Mucklehone now holds their certificates. Dickson requested a deed should issue in the name of Mucklehone for Lot No. 70 and Thomas’s No. 81 and then Thomas will take a title for No. 81 from Mucklehone and give Mucklehone a title for No. 80. Lampman also does not claim Lot No. 70, but has a claim for Lot 82 for which the title has not yet issue. Dickson understood Mucklehone’s name was once on Lot 63, for which John Johnson has got a grant, as there was formerly some dispute respecting some of these lots during the time that the Surveyor General office was at Niagara. They claim that all matters were settled between Mucklehone, Johnson, Hyatt and Nevils. Dickson understood Johnson and Hyatt have got their grants and Nevils has got the grant for 80 by mistake for 81. Mucklehone has possession of Lots No. 70 and 80 since the year 1786 but owing to the want of a regular map of Stamford there has already been son confusion and several titles have been exchanged. (Stamford Township Papers 0320)

On 22 Oct 1811 The Executive Council found that a patent was erroneously sealed to James Neville for Lot No. 80 in the Township of Stamford in place of No. 81 whereby no grant can be made to John Mucklehone the true proprietor of Lot No. 80. On surrender of the patent to James Neville by John Thomas to whom Neville transferred the same, patents can be sealed for Lot No. 80 to John Mucklehone and for No. 81 to John Thomas. The order was referred to Surveyor General Thomas Ridout Esq. (Stamford Township Papers 0377)

On 22 Oct 1811 The Executive Council of Upper Canada gave a grant to John Thomas of Stamford Twp., yeoman for Lot 81 Stamford Twp. in lieu of Lot No. 80 for which a Patent was erroneously issued to James Neville who transferred the same with the land to John Thomas which Patent has been surrendered and is now impounded.
