On 12 Jul 1811 George Adams wrote to William Dickson, Esq. concerning Lot 21 Concession 5 Grantham Twp. In the first settling of the 12 Mile Creek in Grantham it was first settled by Butlers Rangers. A man by the name of Derrick Hainer settled on the west side of said Creek, Henry Smith upon the east side, both on No. 21 in the 5th Concession when it was in a state of nature. It was agreed by these two men that the Creek should be the boundary. Before title was obtained from the Government Henry Smith sold his improvement to Mr. Hamilton. Derrick Hainer remained on his part of the lot until he died. Before he died he left his part to his widow. She soon died and left it to her son Albert Hainer. In the year 1801, Adams purchased from Mr. Hainer the part that he claimed which was about 50 acres. In the year 1805 Adams purchased the remaining part of the lot from Albert Hainer. Adams asked Hainer where the deed was and he said Mr. Hamilton had it. Adams stated he lived on the above described lands ten years and laid out a large sum of money in improvements. He stated he went directly to Mr. Hamilton and asked him if he had the deed. Hamilton said he did not and expected he Albert had it but said he would try and find out whether the deed would come to him or to Albert. Albert says his father was entitled to it as a U. E. The whole of the lot has been improved nearly 20 years and some part of it more than 20 years, 3 or 4 and 20 years. Signed Geo. Adams. (Grantham Township Papers 0400, 0401)
