Campbell, Edward Clarke

On 26 Feb 1844 Edward Clarke Campbell and John L. Almas wrote to the Commissioner of Crown Lands that John McLaughlin who purchased at public sale Lot or Block No. 9 between Crowland and Humberstone in a Gore erroneously supposed to exist but being in reality an ungranted end of Lot 9 Concession 7 Crowland, has assigned to the writers all his right and interest in the same. They requested to be placed in their names. (Crowland Township Papers (0461)

Clarke, Thomas

On 31 Mar 1808 the Lieutenant Governor’s wrote to Acting Surveyor Generals Chewett and Ridout permitting to Thomas Clarke Lots 10, 11, 12 and the east half of Lot 14 Concession 2 and Broken Lots 22, 30, and 31 Concession 7 Crowland Twp. (Crowland Township Papers 0148)

Darling, Henry (Lieutenant)

On 25 Sep 1793 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for Lieut. Henry Darling for two thousand acres of land in Lot 4 Concession 1, Lot 13 Concession 2, Lot 3, Concession 5, Lot 16 Concession 3, Lot 24 Concession 6 and Lots 6, 7, 9, 14, 15, 16, 25, 26, 27 and 28 Concession 7 Crowland Twp. Darling, _______

On 23 Nov 1801 John Fanning wrote to Acting Surveyor General David William Smith Esquire noting he has been some time in possession of a lot of land in the township of Crowland belonging to a Mr. Darling. Fanning now had claim to lands lying in Crowland except it may be a mistake of his. Lot 10 Concession 6 and Lot 13 Concession 7 in the township of Willoughby are bordering on the town of Crowland. Fanning laid no claim to any other land in or near that township except those two lots—if these deeds are made out for Joshua Bennet for this land Fanning should be glad to know or if they can come out in his name as No. 13 stands to Jacob Boughner. Bughner (sic) has sold to Christian Hendrick and Hendrick to Bennet 10 years ago. Fanning asked information about getting the deed for Bennet. Fanning also noted Smith had the selling of Doctor Holmes land in Willoughby lying on the main road up the river to Fort Erie. Fanning wished to know the lowest terms he would take in cash for the lots. (Crowland Township Papers 0367)

Davison, David

Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for David Davison (Ranger) transferred by the Land Board to Peter McMicking for three hundred acres of land in Lots 18, 19 and 20 Concession 4 Crowland Twp. with order of the Land Board 2 Aug 1794 and transfer same day to Peter McMicking. Dell, Barsnet

On 12 Mar 1792 the Land Board read the petition of Barsnet Dell Senr. for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 2 above Chippeway (Crowland) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him two hundred acres in Lots 1 and 2 Concession 1 in the Township of No. 2 above Chippeway. On 9 Aug 1796 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared a surveyor’s assignment for Barsnet Dell for three hundred acres of land in Lots 1 and 2 Broken Fronts Crowland Twp. (Crowland Township Papers 0014)

Dell, Basnet

On 3 Feb 1823 Surveyor General Thomas Ridout prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for Basnet Dell of Willoughby Twp., yeoman for two hundred acres of land in Lots 20 and 23 Concession 5 Crowland Twp. as per an Order in Council dated 17 Mar 1797 for 200 acres of land as family land. Dell, Burrice

On 3 May 1791 the Land Board read the petition of Burrice Dell for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 2 above Chippeway (Crowland) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him two hundred acres in Lots 4 and 5 Concession 5 in the Township of No. 2 above Chippeway. On 9 Aug 1796 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared a surveyor’s assignment for Burrice Dell for two hundred acres of land in Lots 4 and 5 Concession 5 Crowland Twp. (Crowland Township Papers 0294)

Disher, William

On 11 Oct 1794 the Land Board read the petition of William Disher for a grant of additional land in Township No. 2 above Chippeway (Crowland). The Board found he has received 200 acres as a Loyalist and has settled on and improved it. They found him qualified to receive another 400 acres of land for a wife and 7 children. Note in the margin: a Loyalist who came in here in 1788 with a wife and 7 children. (Crowland Township Papers 0216)

On 28 Mar 1797 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared a surveyor’s assignment for William Disher for four hundred acres of land in Lots 17, 18, 19 and 20 Concession 3 Crowland Twp. (Crowland Township Papers 0218)

Doan, Enos/Aneas

On 20 Sep 1798 Martha Burch wrote to Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith stating a Aneas Doan claims Lot No. 10 in the 4th Concession which according to Smith’s claim in her possession was granted to her late husband. She requested Smith to look into the business. On 15 Oct 1818 Surveyor General Thomas Ridout prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for Enos Doan of Crowland Twp., yeoman for one hundred acres of land in Lot 9 Concession 3 Crowland Twp. as per an Order in Council 25 Jul 1818. (Crowland Township Papers 0205)

Doan, Elijah

On 28 May 1795 Elijah Doan aged 35, born in Jersey State, farmer appeared before Dan Millard J. P. and took the prescribed oaths and was recommended for a grant of two hundred acres of land. On 30 May 1795 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith assigned to him two hundred acres in Lot 13 Concession 6 and the north part of Lot 13 Concession 7 Crowland Twp. (Crowland Township Papers 0375)

Doan, Robert

Doan, Thomas Sr.

On 8 Oct 1801 Willson Doan appeared before Thomas Cummings J. P. at Chippawa and affirmed (he being of the people called Quakers) that his father Titus Doan obtained from Government an order for six hundred acres of land within this Province. That he the said Titus Doan contracted for the sale of two hundred acres part of the said six hundred to David Morgan and at the request of said David gave written leave to Walter Anderson to locate the said two hundred acres, and also two hundred acres, part of the said six hundred to Thomas Doan Senior, and the remaining two hundred acres he the said Titus Doan exchanged with John Pattey for two hundred acres of land in Humberstone where on the said Titus now resides. Doan, Thomas

Thomas Doan aged 22, born in Sussex County, miller appeared before David Burns J. P. and took the prescribed oaths and was recommended for a grant of two hundred acres of land. Entered in the Council Office 18 Aug 1795. On the same date Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith assigned to him two hundred acres in Lots 11 and 12 Concession 4 Crowland Twp. Doan, Titus

On 8 Oct 1801 Willson Doan appeared before Thomas Cummings J. On 10 Oct 1801 Thomas Welch wrote to Acting Surveyor General David William Smith respecting the location of lands Titus Doan obtained from the Government. As he was so sick as not to be able to go before the Magistrate, his son with whom he resides, and who is perfectly acquainted with the concern of his father, went with Welch to Chippawa and took the enclosed affirmation. Welch noted a poor relation of his Moses Nevill who has a large family, having purchased of the Honorable Robert Hamilton the lots number 27 and 28 in the 5th concession of the Township of Crowland, and being, as he says informed by some of his neighbours, that those lots did not belong to Mr. H. has requested of Welch to inquire to whom the lots were granted. Welch requested Smith to inform him in that particular for “that poor mans information.” Welch further noted he exchanged 400 acres of land in Humberstone for Lots 18 and 19 in the first Concession of Rainham (with one Stoner and one Bartoon). Doan, Willson

Copy of an order from P. Frey “Mr. Small Recommended No. 90 Wilson Doan 30, Jersey State Farmer. 14 Day April 95.” This was followed by a copy of an order dated 7 Aug 1789 from J. Butler and R. Hamilton “Joseph Willson having requested Permission to use his improvement to support his farming liberty is here given permission to use the same and to Joel White[manis] to purchase the same—given at Niagara this 7 day Aug. 1789. Letter dated 31 Mar 1799 from Willson Doan to Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith, Doan stated he petitioned for the land he lived on Lots No. 11 and 12 in the seventh Concession of Crowland about a year and a half since by Mr. Alex McNabb of the Council and likewise transmitted a certificate from the hand of James Willson to Smith’s office that he resigned his claim thereto. He requested word by the bearer Mr. Elsworth whether his petition was granted or not. (Crowland Township Papers 0478)

On 23 Jun 1801 Wilson Doan and James Wilson signed an agreement giving Wilson Doan in Lot 12 and 81 acres in the north end of Lot 11 divided by a line laid out in a plan, and James Wilson is to have Lot 10 and 53 acres on the south end of Lot 11 and 13 acres out of the southeast end of Lot 12 agreeable to the line run across No. 11. The above mentioned lands are lying in the township of Crowland and in the 7 Concession. Signed by Willson Doan and James Wilson made his mark. Witnessed by Thomas Cummings J. P. On 1 Jan 1804 Receiver General Peter Russell wrote a receipt for Wilson Doan and James Wilson noting they paid into the office £3.5.2 for a grant of 400 acres in Lots 11 and 12 Concession 7 Crowland Twp. conformable to an Order in Council dated 23rd Instant. (Crowland Township Papers 0464)

On 23 Apr 1805 the Executive Council of Upper Canada granted to Wilson Doan and James Wilson of the Township of Crowland, yeomen Lots 11 and 12 Concession 7 Crowland as tenants in common. The said lots having been located by them under Magistrates Certificates dated in April 1795. (Crowland Township Papers 0480)
