On 10 Jan 1791 the Land Board read the petition of Albert Hainer for a grant of 200 acres of land in the Township No. 3 (Grantham) and found him qualified for a grant of 200 acres. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him one hundred acres in Lot 23 Concession 5 in the Township of No. 3. Note in the margin: Ranger. Ralfe Clench wrote to Acting Surveyors General Chewett and Ridout an undated letter stating he yesterday spoke to His Excellency Lt. Governor Gore respecting Lot No. 14 in the 9th Concession of the Township of Grantham. This lot he knows to be vacant. It is entered to John Hainer. The young man he recommended to the Lt. Governor is David Hainer, son of John Hainer. He wished the lot may be granted to David Hainer as he has two hundred acres granted him as son of a U. E. Loyalist, the other hundred he cared not where it is located, but the above lot has always been in possession of the Hainer family and has two lots over their quantity. Hainer, Richard (Derrick)

On 11 Jul 1811 George Adams wrote to Isaac Swayze Esq. concerning a description of Lot No. 22 in the 5 Concession of Grantham. He noted the lot was first settled by Richard Hainer commonly called Derrick Hainer in the year 1801. Said Hainer died. Since that time several others have worked on the lot, and at present a William May occupies it. The widow of said Richard or Derrick Hainer lives on said lot. Adams has frequently told the relatives of said Derrick if there was a claim they ought to attend to it. Said Richard had several daughters and no son. He said Richard was a soldier in Butlers Rangers. There is between 20 and 30 acres of improvement on said lot with a small log house. It appears Richard and Derrick is one and the same name. Memo dated 12 Jul 1811 initialled by Thomas Ridout: Mr. L. J. George says that Lot No. 21 in 5 Con Grantham was sold to Mr. Hamilton—that 22 in 5 Con is occupied by a widow woman with family of 11 children who have lived on the lot upwards of 20 years. (Grantham Township Papers 0405)

On 11 Mar 1813 Surveyor General Thomas Ridout prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for Dorothy May, Mary Gaskey, Catharine Hainer, Cornelia Hainer, Clara Hainer, Elizabeth Hainer, Eve Hainer, Margaret Hainer and Sarah Hainer of the Township of Grantham, daughters of Richard Hainer of the same place deceased for 100 acres of land in Lot 22 Concession 5 in the Township of Grantham under the 9th Claim of Commissioners Report in July 1812. On 12 Jul 1811 George Adams wrote to William Dickson, Esq. concerning Lot 21 Concession 5 Grantham Twp. In the first settling of the 12 Mile Creek in Grantham it was first settled by Butlers Rangers. A man by the name of Derrick Hainer settled on the west side of said Creek, Henry Smith upon the east side, both on No. 21 in the 5th Concession when it was in a state of nature. It was agreed by these two men that the Creek should be the boundary. Before title was obtained from the Government Henry Smith sold his improvement to Mr. Hamilton. Derrick Hainer remained on his part of the lot until he died. Before he died he left his part to his widow. She soon died and left it to her son Albert Hainer. In the year 1801, Adams purchased from Mr. Hainer the part that he claimed which was about 50 acres. In the year 1805 Adams purchased the remaining part of the lot from Albert Hainer. Adams asked Hainer where the deed was and he said Mr. Hamilton had it. Adams stated he lived on the above described lands ten years and laid out a large sum of money in improvements. He stated he went directly to Mr. Hamilton and asked him if he had the deed. Hamilton said he did not and expected he Albert had it but said he would try and find out whether the deed would come to him or to Albert. Albert says his father was entitled to it as a U. E. The whole of the lot has been improved nearly 20 years and some part of it more than 20 years, 3 or 4 and 20 years. Signed Geo. Adams. (Grantham Township Papers 0400, 0401)

Hutchison, George

On 23 Jun 1844 William Hamilton Merritt wrote to the Surveyor General stating George Hutchison purchased Lots 4 and 5 in the 5th and 6th Concessions of Grantham from the Estate of Major General Pilkington who purchased from John McKay since when he has been regularly registered in this District. During this present month one William McMichael of Long Point has claimed the above lots and gave Mr. Hutchison notice to quite—representing himself heir at law to Edward McMichael whom he states received a grant from the Crown. Merritt requested ascertaining as early as possible whether a patent has ever been issued for the above named 200 acres of land, and if so when and to whom. (Grantham Township Papers 0279)

On 21 Dec 1793 the Land Board read the petition of John Shaver for a grant of 200 acres of land in the Township No. 3 (Grantham) and found him qualified for a grant of 200 acres. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him two hundred acres in Lot 3 and 4 Concession 9 in the Township of No. 3. Note of the Land Board dated April 11, 1791 on the reverse: John Shaver having petitioned the Board for permission to assign this lot to Adam Hutt the Board herby confirm the transfer and direct the within lots of No. 3 & 4 of the 9th Concession in the Township No. 3 to stand in the name of Adam Hutt and to remain his property.
