Seburn, Stephen

On 9 Feb 1791 the Land Board read the petition of Stephen Seaburn for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him two hundred acres in Lots 12 and 13 Concession 7 in the Township of No. 9. Marginal note: Lots No. 123 & 124 (Thorold Township Papers 0310)

On 9 Feb 1791 the Land Board read the petition of Stephen Seaburn for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found he has received two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 as a Loyalist and he has settled on and improved the same and that he is entitled to a further assignment of one hundred acres for his wife and one child. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him two hundred acres in Lot 14 Concessions 7 in the Township of No. 9. Marginal note: Otherwise Lot No. 125. On 25 Mar 1817 Surveyor General Thomas Ridout prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for Stephen Seburn of Stamford Twp. for 300 acres of land in Lots 123 and 124 Thorold Twp. as per an Order in Council of 8 Mar 1817 that the erroneous patent granting to Stephen Seaburn Lot No. 59 in Stamford and Lot No. 123, 124 and 126 in Thorold dated on 1 Sep 1797 surrendered to the Crown on 6 Oct 1816 by the grantee whose true name is Stephen Seburn be impounded in the Council office, the surrender accepted and that new and correct patents do issue conformable to the true descriptions of the Surveyor General. Silverthorn, Jonathan

On 2 Aug 1791 the Land Board read the petition of Jonathan Silverthorn for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith who assigned to him on 9 Aug 1794 two hundred acres in Lots 229 and 230 with a small piece of broken front on the creek adjoining to No. 229 in the Township of No. 9. On 8 Dec 1800 the Executive Council of Upper Canada gave a grant to Jonathan Silverthorn of Thorold Twp., yeoman for 210 acres in Lots 229 and 230 with a small piece of broken front on the River Welland adjoining Lot No. 229 Thorold Twp. (Thorold Township Papers 0524)

On 20 Jul 1803 Acting Surveyors General Chewett and Ridout prepared a surveyor’s assignment for Peter Slaght of Stamford Twp., yeoman for two hundred acres of land in Lots 165 and 170 Thorold Twp. as per 50th Claim Niagara Commission 1803. On 3 May 1791 the Land Board read the petition of James Slack for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him two hundred acres in Lot 20 Concessions 7 and 8 in the Township of No. 9. Marginal Note: Lots 165 and Lot 170. Snow, John

Lot 17 in the Township of Thorold 100 acres; Lot 2 in the 2nd Range of the Gore of Grimsby south of 20 Mile Creek 200 acres; The broken Lot No. 22 7th Concession York upon the River Humber 72 acres; A tract of land in the Township of Niagara bounded be the lands of Messrs Pickard on the south, by Messrs Ball on the east and by the Four Mile Creek on the north and west formerly occupied by, and assigned to John Snow, but cancelled by order of His Excellency Lieut. Spencer, Robert

On 27 Feb 1819 Robert Spencer of Thorold affirmed before Amos Chapman, J. P. that Lot No. 24 in the Township of Thorold is unoccupied and unimproved and that he has been informed that the said Lot was entered to one Peter Etock, that he saw the said Etock about fourteen years ago, that the said Etock told him that the said Etock resided in the United States of America, that the said Etock was not a British subject nor never would be. Steinhoff, Emanual

On 9 Aug 1794 the Land Board read the petition of Emanuel “Stinehoff” for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith who on 18 Oct 1794 assigned to him near two hundred acres in Lots 214 and 215 in the Township of No. 9. (Thorold Township Papers 0495)

Stoffle, John

On 1 May 1791 the Land Board read the petition of John Stoffle a Ranger for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him one hundred acres in Lot 15 in [blank] Concession in the Township of No. 9. Marginal note of Hon. On 29 Sep 1796 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared a surveyor’s assignment for John Stoffle for 100 acres of land in Lot 80 Thorold Twp. (Thorold Township Papers 0215)


Sweezy, Isaac

On 10 Feb 1791 the Land Board read the petition of John Hodgekison for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him two hundred acres in Lots 14 and 15 Concession 3 in the Township of No. 9. Note on the reverse: The Land Board consent to the transfer of the within Lotts from John Hodgekison to Isaac Sweezy (Thorold Township Papers 0112, 0113)

On 1 May 1797, Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared a surveyor’s assignment for John Hodgekison transferred to Isaac Sweezy by the Land Board Lots 37 and 38 with their broken fronts being the 14 and 15 Lots from the Township’s east boundary Thorold. (Thorold Township Papers 0110)

On 11 Jan 1811 Major William Halton wrote to Thomas Ridout, Esq. saying the Lieutenant Governor has been pleased to grant a license of occupation to Isaac Swayze for the Glebe Lots 98, 99 and 100 in the Township of Thorold. (Thorold Township Papers 0262)

On 22 Apr 1815 Thomas Merritt, Sheriff issued a receipt to Isaac Swayze Esq. for eighteen dollars for rent on the Clergy Reserve of three hundred acres of land in the Township of Thorold. (Thorold Township Papers 0263)


Sweezy, Israel

On 9 Feb 1791 the Land Board read the petition of Israel Sweezy for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 9 (Thorold) and found him qualified to receive two hundred acres of land. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him two hundred acres in Lots 11 and 12 Concession 4 in the Township of No. 9. Marginal note of D. W. Smith: By Major Holland`s plan these Lots are No. 54 and half 53. Further note No. 11 to be divided with John Willson. (Thorold Township Papers 0159)

The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him four hundred acres in Lots 13 Concession 4 and Lots 10, 11 and 12 Concession 5 in the Township of No. 9. On 21 Oct 1796 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared a surveyor’s assignment for Israel Sweezy for 550 acres of land in the west half of Lot 53 and the Lots 54, 55, 75, 76 and 77 Thorold Twp. Added note: with 2 Ld. Bd. Certificates—one of which it is observed that No. 11.4th Conc. that is No. 53, is to be divided with John Wilson. (Thorold Township Papers 0157)


Swazy, Richard

On 29 Mar 1828 Richard Swazy wrote to Hon. Peter Robinson stating he is desirous of purchasing the Glebe Lots No. 98 and 99 containing each 100 acres in the Township of Thorold and will give for the same 10 shillings currency per acre and will comply with the conditions set.
