MacKay/McKay, Elizabeth

On 8 Oct 1829 Acting Surveyor General William Chewett prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for Elizabeth MacKay of the Township of Ernestown in the County of Lenox and Addington, wife of William J. MacKay Esquire, as only surviving child and heiress at law of Lieut. Duncan Murray of His Majesty’s 84 Regiment deceased who died intestate for 700 acres of land in Lots 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20 in the 5 Concession and Lot No. 17 in the Sixth Concession in the Township of Grantham under the 32nd Claim Commissioners Report in July 1829. Lieut. Duncan Murray 84th Regiment original nominee. This is followed by many papers concerning the right of Elizabeth MacKay to this land. (Grantham Township Papers 0455)

Man, William

On 9 Jan 1791 the Land Board read the petition of William Man for a grant of two hundred acres of land in Township No. 3 (Grantham) and found he has received two hundred acres of land in Township No. 3 as a Loyalist and he has settled on and improved the same and that he is entitled to a further assignment of three hundred acres for his wife and five children. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him two hundred acres in Lot 4 Concessions 8, 9 and 10 Concession 5 in the Township of No. 3. On 11 Jun 1803 William Dickson wrote a memorandum to Messrs. Chewett and Ridout, Acting Surveyors General stating searches are wanted for the following persons locations: Peter Secord Junr. Lots 135 and 136 in the Township of Niagara; Donald McDonald Lot 253 in the Town of Niagara; John Rock Lot 179 in the Town of Niagara; William Overholt Lot 3 in 7 and 8th Concession Grantham. This was by authority of The Land Board—transferred to John Clement and the certificate assignment and transfer lodged with Mr. White late Attorney General, yet cannot be now found. On 29 Mar 1790 the Land Board read the petition of Walter Butler Sheehan for a grant of 200 acres of land in the Township No. 3 (Grantham) and found him qualified for a grant of 200 acres. The order was referred to Acting Surveyor General Augustus Jones who assigned to him two hundred acres in Lot 8 Concessions 1 and 2 in the Township of No. 3. Note of the Land Board dated 14 Dec 1793 on the reverse: Walter Butler Sheehan having petitioned this Board to transfer the within two hundred acres of land viz. no. 8 in 1 and 2 Concessions in Township No. 4 do authorize the sales and they hereby transferred to Mr. John McKay of Newark. McMichael, Edward

On 3 Jul 1795 The Executive Council of Upper Canada read the petition of Edward McMichael, Captain of Associated Loyalists in His Majesty’s Service last War praying for three thousand acres of land as a captain servicing America setting forth that he has a wife and ten children, for whom he prays such portion of land as may seem meet. The Council ordered that the petitioner Edward McMichael be granted three thousand acres of land and referred to the Acting Surveyor General for location. (Grantham Township Papers 0282)

On 12 Nov 1796 Acting Surveyor General D. W. Smith prepared an undated surveyor’s assignment for Edward McMichael for 200 acres of land in Lot 5 Concessions 5 and 6 in the Township of Grantham. Note at the bottom: No. 1664 Thid description for 200 acres; No. 1663 for 1365 acres; No. 1662 for 1390 acres; 18 August 95 in Newark for 45 acres; Total 3,001 auth. OC 3 July 95. On 23 Jun 1844 William Hamilton Merritt wrote to the Surveyor General stating George Hutchison purchased Lots 4 and 5 in the 5th and 6th Concessions of Grantham from the Estate of Major General Pilkington who purchased from John McKay since when he has been regularly registered in this District. During this present month one William McMichael of Long Point has claimed the above lots and gave Mr. Hutchison notice to quite—representing himself heir at law to Edward McMichael whom he states received a grant from the Crown. Merritt requested ascertaining as early as possible whether a patent has ever been issued for the above named 200 acres of land, and if so when and to whom. (Grantham Township Papers 0279)

On 24 Jan 1797 The Executive Council of Upper Canada granted to Isabella Murray of the Township of Niagara, widow of the late Lieut. Duncan Murray of the 84th Regt., deceased, six hundred acres of land in addition to six hundred already ordered. (Grantham Township Papers 0317)

On 14 Oct 1875 J. G. Scott wrote a memo for the Attorney General in re the claim presented by Rev. Bolton Read on behalf of Elizabeth McKay (now deceased) heiress at law of Lieut. Duncan Murray. In August 1795 a description issued in the name of Lieut. Duncan Murray for Lots 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20 in 5th Concession and No. 17 in 6th Concession Grantham under a Land Board Certificate. This application is made for compensation for loss of these lands they having been forfeited on 27th June 1799 to Robert Hamilton Jr. [Mrs.] McKay in 1829 applied to the Heir and Devisee Commission for a certificate that she was entitled to a patent and obtained the allowance of her claim…. This is followed by a large number of papers relating to the claims on the lots. (Grantham Township Papers 0326)
