Ekins, James

In a letter dated at Wainfleet on 25 Jun 1834 James Ekins wrote to the Honourable Peter Robinson, Commissioner of Crown Lands stating His Excellency having personally referred Ekins to Robinson on the 4th July and 1st September last with his instructions each time to protect my grant of land of 300 acres in the gore between Crowland and Humberstone in the District of Niagara and having by Robinson’s direction applied at the office of the Surveyor General to be located on those lands, he now informed that the only information he could obtain was to desire Ekins to go to the Governor. He asked that Robinson being in full possession of the circumstances, spare Ekins of the pain of again troubling His Excellency. On 2 Nov 1832 a description of those lands was given to Ekins by the Surveryor General in order that he make a selection. He is located on Lots No. 9, 13, 21 and 22 which makes about 186 the deficit 164 acres. He hoped to have located to him Lots No. 1, 5, 6, 7, 38, 34, 33, 31, which may be only 2 acres over his original grant. (Crowland Township Papers 0006)

On 7 May 1835 James Ekins wrote to the Surveyor General that a stake marked 21 R on the southeast part of Lot No. 21 in the 7th Concession of Crowland on the Crowland line has of late been destroyed. John Yokom a settler in Lot 20 has made oath to said stake being of 23 years standing to his knowledge. A corner stake on the southwest corner was destroyed on Wednesday the 29th ult. by Henry Sager a settler on Lot 21 in the 7 concession of Crowland who I have seen destroy said stake. Ekins has been to two of His Majesty’s Justices of the Peace concerning said stakes, who ordered him to call on the others having knowledge of the place where said stake has stood to plant others in their place. Fanning, John

On 23 Nov 1801 John Fanning wrote to Acting Surveyor General David William Smith Esquire noting he has been some time in possession of a lot of land in the township of Crowland belonging to a Mr. Darling. Fanning now had claim to lands lying in Crowland except it may be a mistake of his. Lot 10 Concession 6 and Lot 13 Concession 7 in the township of Willoughby are bordering on the town of Crowland. Fanning laid no claim to any other land in or near that township except those two lots—if these deeds are made out for Joshua Bennet for this land Fanning should be glad to know or if they can come out in his name as No. 13 stands to Jacob Boughner. Bughner (sic) has sold to Christian Hendrick and Hendrick to Bennet 10 years ago. Fanning asked information about getting the deed for Bennet. Fanning also noted Smith had the selling of Doctor Holmes land in Willoughby lying on the main road up the river to Fort Erie. Fanning wished to know the lowest terms he would take in cash for the lots. (Crowland Township Papers 0367)

The lease was obtained from Rev. Mr. Anderson, Fort Erie the terms of which will expire 2 years from 10th inst. He wished to purchase the lot if it could be done on reasonable terms. Signed John Feere. (Crowland Township Papers 0213)
