Fun & Respect Day 2011

Last Saturday May 14th was the club's third annual Family Fun Day. It was a great day for young and old and the fact that the weather obliged, ensured that everyone had a ball. This year we also encouraged everyone to wear their county jerseys. In all, 11 counties were represented by coaches & parents - the "United Counties of Ballina". All of the children played fun games and the parents took penalty kicks and joined their friends and neighbours in a tug o' war. The U6's & 8's got us under way at 10AM with sack races, egg & spoon races, walk the plank and penalty shoot out. Then the U10's & 12's began their games which included long puck and wheelbarrow races.

In the Tug o' War, both the men's and ladies competitions were keenly contested with the bout only being decided on the third & final pull in each case. There was disappointment however for the Tipperary tug o' war team who were heavily defeated by an enthuiastic rest of Ireland team. Commiserations to the ladies & gentlemen of the Premier. The boys and girls had great fun and a full set of photos can be seen on the home page of our website.

North Tipp Intermediate Hurling Championship

The Intermediate hurlers made their 2011 Championship debut with a challenging encounter against a very focussed and determined Silvermines team. The game was played under very blustery conditions, the strong wind favoured the Mines in the 1st half, and they made the most of it, scoring points freely, and 2 goals in the 14th and 15th minutes scored by the Keogh brothers Willie and Daniel helped them into a 2-11 to 0-7 lead at half time .After the interval Ballina introduced Daniel Frawley and young Mike Breen

to the action, both players made an immediate impact on the game, adding much needed penetration to the Ballina attack. Aided by the strong breeze they began to dominate the game, scoring a no. of points from frees and play, just on the call of time TJ O Connell scored a great goal from a breaking ball to put Ballina ahead for the 1st time in the game. However Willie Keogh in extra time scored a point from a free, to make the match a draw, probably a fair result in the end.
