North Tipperary U16A Football Champions

Congratulations to the Ballina U16’s who retained the North “A” football crown last week with a hard fought victory over Nenagh by a scoreline of 1:10 to 0:10. Ballina played with the aid of a strong breeze in the first half and led by a score of 0:07 to 0:03 at half time. This didn’t look like being enough of an advantage at that point, but the team dug deep and fought tenaciously in the second half. With Nenagh closing the gap, Ballina worked a great move up the field, and substitute Eamonn Healy rattled the net with what proved the decisive score. Great credit is due to the whole squad who now move on to a county semi final in June.

Congrats also to our Under 16 A Footballers who defeated a Newport-Ballinahinch team by one point to reach the North Final after a titanic game.

April 4th 2011

North Tipperary Football Championship

It was a disappointing week for the U14 & U16 footballers, who came out on the wrong side against Inane Rovers & Nenagh respectively. The U12 footballers fared considerably better winning hansomely at home at the expense of Newport. The U12 Championship as we knew it was discontinued in 2010, and in place of it is the Premier 12's.This is still a competitive campaign, but under national GAA guidelines intended to increase participation, all subs have to be used.

U10 Hurling Blitz

The U10 hurlers had a very satisfactory outing at a hurling blitz in Newport last Saturday. Facing the home team as well as Ballinahinch & Silvermines, it was the Ballina boys' first hurling match of the year. There was some great team play on view as well as some nice scores and great defending. Like all blitzes, every one of the 22 boys who travelled got game time and they all enjoyed themselves.

U6 & U8 Start Date

This coming Saturday (April 9th) is the start of the season for the youngest members of our club. It's bound to be a bit hectic so please arrive as early as you can. Club officials will be on hand from 9:30 to help kit out any chldren who need helmets of hurleys. Remember, if you need a registration form it can be downloaded from our website and if you want to buy a hurley or helmet before Saturday, please contact Eamonn at 086 7737 237.

Ballina embraces Scrap Saturday

Who would have guessed there was so much scrap metal in Ballina ? The people of Ballina were quick off the mark last Saturday morning to avail of the opportunity to dispose of some unwanted metal items, whilst also supporting their local club. A ten tonne skip which looked very big when it arrived, was full to the point of over-flowing shortly after lunchtime and the demand for the service was such that the club will consider running another such day in the near future.

U6 & U8 Start Dates

For those parents who have young children asking them about the start date for U6 (mixed) & U8 (boys) GAA this year, you can tell them it's Saturday April 9th. Last year we had 52 U6's on the first morning, so it will be very busy and it is a good idea to get your subsidised helmets and hurleys in advance. Contact Eamonn at (086) 7737 237 to avail of this.

The u16b championship team were out against templederry last Saturday, they were beaten by a very strong templederry team. They played Kiladagan this Saturday in a highly competitive game, and were beaten by four points at the final whistle. Well done to the boys who can build from each game and develope for the future. Well done to Dan Finnerty and Aidan Hanley who are part of the North u16 hurling panel.

March 20th 2011

St Patrick's Day Parade

Well done to all involved in the St Patrick's Day Parade. This year Ballina GAA combined forces with Lough Derg FC & Ballina Killaloe RFC to march as one group. It was a great sight to see all of the children in their favourite sports gear and some club jereys as well, marching together. The children enjoyed themselves immensely and they even managed to locate the vehicle where the treats were stored at the end of the parade and were well rewarded for their energy-sapping efforts. (Selection of photos attached).

North Tipperary Football Championship

Ballina U16s got off the mark in this year's North Tipp Football Championship with a fine victory over Inane Rovers (Roscrea) last Tuesday March 15th, winning on a 4:08 to 2:08 scoreline. Next up is the combined forces of Newport/Ballinahinch.

Friends of Ballina GAA

Have you been up to the hurling field recently ? Despite all that an Irish winter can throw at it, the surface is actually quite good just now. That is thanks in no small way to John Gleeson and the ground staff who do an excellent job. The pitch will come under a lot of pressure when 400 enthusiastic children descend up on it over the next month or so, not to mention the Intermediates, Junior A’s, U21’s & Minors. Quite simply the field will not be able to withstand the wear and tear it gets each year. The pitch also hosts the school sports day & the community games athletics meeting.

As an example, the club had approximately 40 U10 boys registered last year and half of the pitch was enough for training. In 3 years’ time, many of these boys will be U14’s and will need a full pitch to themselves for training. The good news is that there are new people making contributions every week – which is very encouraging. Right now the focus is on getting the planning application through the planning process with North Tipperary County Council. The club is appealing to everyone whose children get to use the current playing field to play their part in supporting the drive to purchase a much-needed second field and sustain Gaelic games in our parish. Any contribution is welcome and it can be a one-off or recurring donation. As an example, €5 a week is a big help in securing a much-needed additional facility in the parish of Ballina & Boher. We are very close to starting construction and we are confident that with your help we will achieve our goals. Join the team – build the dream !

New Ballina GAA Website & Facebook

It’s new, it’s better than the last one and it’s now live. As you may have seen in the national media, the GAA has moved all of its websites over to a Google platform as the old infrastructure was no longer viable. The new website is far easier to navigate and has many new features such as slide shows, videos, club calendar etc. It also has some collaborative features allowing you to post comments and discuss topics. 2010 Season

Nov 14th

North Tipperary Presentation Night

Ballina GAA was well represented at the presentation night last weekend in Nenagh. 2010 saw the club winn North titles in U14A Football, U16B Hurling & Football. This is great recognition for all the lads involved in each of the 3 panels and their mentors, without whom none of this would be possible. The captains of the 3 teams attended on the night representing the club.

Friends of Ballina GAA Meeting

Having received the overwhelming support of the club last week, the Friends of Ballina GAA will hold a meeting next Thursday night Nov 18th at 8:30pm at the complex. This meeting is for interersted parties - anyone who has forms that they may have completed, people who would like to get more information about the scheme or to help with the next push of getting new members on board. We would ask all current promoters to attend also so that we can plan for the next steps. An open day is planned for the end of the month. This will allow people to have a brief presentation on the scheme and to walk the marked out area of the new field.

U14's Paintballing

The U14 squad and mentors went paintballing recently in Terryglass. A great day was had by all (pic attached).

Oct 17th

County U16 Hurling Final

Ballina U16 hurlers' were beaten by a fine Carrick Swans outfit last Saturday in Littleton 1:09 to 3:09. Ballina started brightly with lots of possession but not enough scores as the Swans defence had a tight grip on the Ballina forwards. Ballina would later rue the lack of scores to go with that posession, especially as Swans had the ball in the net twice in as many minutes around the 20 minute mark, by which time Ballina had only managed 3 points while playing with the wind. Ballina added two more points to leave the HT score Ballina 0:05 Carrick Swans 2:02.

Ballina clearly faced a huge task in the second half but not unlike their semi final performance, they upped the ante after the break. Two inspirational points after the short whistle gave Ballina a chance. Swans were not giving up though and had another goal and a point themselves. When Stephen O'Brien's storming 100 yard run from the back created a free, that posession ultimately led to Mike Breen's well-taken goal. There were 15 minutes left and Ballina trailed by just 2 points. Unfortunately Carrick Swans finished stronger over the last 5-10 minutes and eventhough Mike Breen was unlucky not to score another goal against the excellent Swans netminder, they were full value for their 6 point victory. The U16 players and mentors have given us lots of great memories and plenty to be proud of in 2010. Well done lads ! On behalf of Ballina GAA club, heartiest congratulations to worthy winners Carrick Swans - 2010 U16B Hurling Champions.

U14 Inter-county Football Blitz

Congatulations to Jack Brady, Phelim O'Hagan, David Bradshaw & Jamie Collins who were part of the Tipp panel that took part in the U14 football blitz in Waterford last Sunday. Well done lads !

U16B Hurling County Semi Final Victory

Ballina U16 hurlers accounted for a dogged Emly side in the County semi final last Saturday and in the process booked a county final date with South Tipperary representatives Carrick Swans next weekend. Many fancied Ballina to account for the black and amber of Emly with a bit to spare, but that myth was exposed early on, as despite an early goal from Conor Gilmore, Ballina struggled to impose themselves on the game, despite having a decent share of posession. Crucially though, Ballina's scores though few in the first half, included 2 goals (second coming from some deft wrist-work on the part of Mike Breen in front of goal). This helped them to be on level pegging at half time scoring 2:02 to Emly's 1:05, but clearly with a lot to do as they faced a moderate breeze in the second half.

It was then that Ballina's leadership traits took over as the changes made by the mentors at half time clearly worked. There was hard work and honesty all over the field, with Christopher Collins at corner back epitomising this with a fine & fearless display. After a difficult opening to the second half where Emly fed the ball in low, Ballina's backs coped well thereafter and Adrian Power's goal was not really threatened much after half time. It was again very tight and the possibility of extra time was beginning to surface in spectators' minds. A goal was needed to put a bit of daylight between the teams. Sure enough, Mike Breen duly obliged. After a blistering run through the Emly defence he despatched it to the net to stretch the lead out to 4 points. Dan Finnerty continued his fine run of form with a tireless display again and Stephen O'Brien coped well at the back with the livewire Emly forwards. Ronan Bourke came late in the game and tacked on a crucial point to keep the Emly men at arm's length. 2010 has been a great adventure for this group of players and everything from here on is a bonus. On behalf of the club, the very best of luck to the mentors & entire squad in the county final next weekend (time and date TBD). Béal an Átha Abú !

Get Well Soon Ciaran

The club extends best wishes to Ciaran McKeogh. Ciaran is part of the U12 squad, and played with distinction at corner back for the hurling team this year.

He was in hospital recently for an operation and everyone in the club wishes him a full & speedy recovery.

Ballina U16B North Hurling champions 2010:

Ballina are U16B North Tipperary Hurling Champions for 2010 after they beat Portroe on Saturday last in a cracking final by a scoreline of 3:09 to 1:10. There was tremendous hurling in this close-fought and exciting final with Ballina coming out on top thanks to a strong second half performance. It was a quiet enough opening 30 minutes, with both sides finding it hard to score. The teams were level at half time - Ballina 1:03 to 0:06 for Portroe, Mike Breen netting the goal for Ballina. Ballina upped their game in the second half with further goals coming from Dan Finnerty and Adrian Hurley. Indeed Ballina opened up a seven point lead at one stage. Nobody was surprised when a galant Portroe side staged a big comeback late in the second half, but they were repelled over the final stages by a solid Ballina defence.

Congratulations to the players and mentors on winning a North Tipp title. This is a great achievement any year but coming on top of their success earlier in the season of winning the North A football championship, it is particularly special. A great double for the team and club and well done to all. The team now move on to the county semi-final which is expected to be played next weekend - dates and venues not yet available

Sept 26th

U16B Hurling North Semi Final Victory

Congratulations to the U16 hurlers who accounted for Newport/Ballinahinch in Dolla last Sunday evening on a 2:15 to 3:08 scoreline. It was a great win for the lads and they are now in their second North Final of 2010, having won the North Football title earlier in the year. The North Final is on next Saturday - time and date to be announced.

U14 Hurling Plate Finalists

Comiserations to the U14 hurlers who were beaten by Roscrea after extra time by a single score in extra time of their Plate Final in Toomevara last Friday evening, the final score Roscrea 2:08 Ballina 1:08.

U6, U8 & U10 Finished training for 2010

All of the above groups have now finished training activities for 2010. The U6's had their blitz last Saturday, the U8's also had a blitz and the U10's had a football blitz to finish up which great fun as there were 4 fantastic guest coaches from the U16 panel - Brian Hurley, Eamonn Hayes, Niall Sheehy & Chris Collins. Thanks lads. On behalf of the U6,U8 & U10 coaches, the club would like to thank all the 100+ boys for their sporting efforts during the year and also to thank the parents, without which the whole club would not function. Míle buíochas díbh go léir.

John Joe Nevin U10 Hurling Tournament

Now in its 7th year, this U10 hurling tournament was held last Sunday in honour of John Joe Nevin, with Clare club Clonlara emerging as winners after a titanic tussle with Portroe in the final. This event just seems to get better every year and it was a great day's hurling, befitting the memory of such a figure in the community. Ballina were pitted against our nearest neighbours, Killaloe as well as Portroe in Group 1. Ballina's ground hurling paid rich dividends in the first half v Killalloe as they raced into an early lead thanks to two goals from Robbie Breen & one from Matthew Power. Eoghan Power added points and Ballina were a commanding 3-4 to 1-0 up at half time. Killaloe redoubled their efforts after half time and hit back strongly with two goals from placed balls from the outstanding Aoife Power. Ballina held on to win on a tight scoreline in the finish. Next up was Portroe. This was a ding dong battle that went down to the wire. Ballina boys battled bravely to the end and were only denied a place in the final by a single point. It was hard on the boys who gave everything to get to the final but Portroe were worthy winners.

In the other group, Ahane and Newport played out a draw and Clonlara beat both Newport & Ahane to claim a spot in the final. On a day when rain threatened all day, it finally came down a bit heavier during the final but that did little to detract from what was a truly outstanding final between Clonlara & Portroe and one of which both clubs can be very proud. Both Portroe & Clonlara had exceptional players but Clonlara probably had the edge right through the game and held on for a famous win. Chairman Mike Keely thanked all present for making it such a special day. Tipp All Ireland hero, Gearoid Ryan paid a visit and took the time to sign autographs for the children. Mrs Patsy Nevin presented the trophy to a delighted Clonlara captain, Conor Burke.

It's great to be involved in a happy, positive occasion but these events don't take place without a lot of organisation. A special word of thanks to all those who helped in so many ways - preparing & serving food for the hungry masses, organising the parking, preparing the teams, creating the souvenir match programme & those who got the pitch looking so well. Go raibh míle maith agaibh agus comhgáirdeachas to CLG Cluain Lara, John Joe Nevin U10 Champions 2010.

Ballina Panel: Corey Ryan, David Slevin, George Kealy, James Hanly, Dylan Johnston, Conor Bourke, Diarmuid Kelly, Oisin Conacur, Eoghan Power, Conor Power, Cian O'Donnell, Cian Neill, Matthew Power, Robbie Breen, Sam Loughran, Evan Flynn, David Grace, Tadhg Maguire, James Power, Leon Kerin-Galvin, Keelan Farnan, Daniel O'Meara, Josh Egan, Cameron Macauley, David Meek, Neil Webster & Abe Ryan.

September 5th

All Ireland Champions !

Congratulations to Tipperary seniour hurlers, who bridged a nine-year gap last Sunday in capturing the Liam McCarthy cup for the 26th time. Given how many of them I met in Croke Park, I am not sure if there were many GAA people left in Ballina last Sunday but those who were left were no doubt glued to the telly. Well done to all the Tipp panel and Portroe's Liam Sheedy on a powerful, skillful performance that derailed Kilkenny's "Drive for Five" Special mention of Shane McGrath who is well known to all the Juveniles in Ballina from his previous visits to Cul Camp and also to our neighbour - Newport's Conor O'Mahony. Brendan Maher was a big hit with the kids at the Cul Camp this year - well done Brendan, Shane & Conor.

JohnJoe Nevin U10 Tournament

The 7th annual festival of hurling to commemorate the late great JohnJoe Nevin takes place on Sunday September 19th. It's always a great day's hurling for the lads and this year we welcome Portroe, Newport, Killaloe, Ahane & Clonlara. Maybe the next Lar Corbett will be there casually bagging goals so don't miss out !

July 18th 2010

GAA VHI Cul Camp comes to Ballina

Last week, 101 boys and girls from the community took part in the GAA’s ever-popular VHI Cúl Camp. It’s always a hit with boys and girls of all ages and 2010 was no different. This year, we were very fortunate to have the assistance of well-known Tipperary coach Len Gaynor, under whose direction the week’s activities happened. Tipperary star Brendan Maher paid a visit to the camp to sign autographs, give advice and answer questions. Barry O’Brien, Tipperary GAA Chairman also stopped by to lend his support, telling the youngsters aged 7-13 that they are the future of Gaelic Games in the area and that it’s a week they should not forget. Thankfully, the promised inclement weather remained somewhere over the rainbow, which meant that the children had very little rain interruptions. On behalf of the club, a big thank you to all those volunteers who helped make it a huge success again in 2010. Míle buíochas.

U12 Hurlers Bow Out at SF stage

Ballina’s U12 hurlers, who had qualified for the semi-final of the North Tipperary hurling championship lost out to Burgess on a 3-3 to 1-2 scoreline in Portroe on Friday night last. It was a disappointment to boys and their coaches but they can hold their heads high having won through the group stages so impressively. Well done to all concerned.

U14 County Football Panel Representatives

Congratulations to Phelim O’Hagan, James Murtagh, Jamie Collins, Thomas Conway, Jack Brady & David Bradshaw who were part of the Tipp U14 county panel training camp recently. The boys spend two days in training in Cork as part of the inter-county peil development programme. The boys got to play matches against all the Munster counties and attended development sessions with guest speakers. This is wonderful recognition for so many of our young up and coming players to be part of a training camp with the best of facilities and excellent sessions. Well done boys !

Get Well Soon !

U14 player Adrian Power had his appendix out recently. We wish him well and hopefully he will have a speedy recovery & be back on his feet before long. Get well soon Adrian !

Handball County Finals

Well done to Ronan Bourke who won the U14 singles 60 X 30 County Handball Finals in Thurles last weekend. Shane McCormack was beaten in the U17 final and Dylan Ryan lost out narrowly in the U16 final. Well done to all.

U8 Brian Boru Champions !

Ballina U8 hurlers are Brian Boru champions for the second year in a row. The boys recorded their victory in the annual U8 Brian Boru hurling tournament beating the hosts Killaloe in the final after overcoming a strong Bodyke challenge in the semi-final. This year we fielded two teams as there are lots of boys and both teams acquitted themselves very well indeed. All of the boys did their club, their families and themselves proud – heartiest congratulations to all. It was a tremendous performance from the U8 boys and their victory is another very positive sign for the future of our young expanding membership.

U10 Blitz held in Ballina

Ballina hosted the monthly North Tipp U10 blitz last Saturday. As it turned out, only near neighbours Portroe were available to attend which meant that the boys got lots of game time against Portroe’s two teams. It was a highly competitive morning’s hurling with Ballina winning 2 out of 4. Again, we saw some great hurling and scoring so well done to all concerned.

June 20th 2010

U14A Hurling Championship

Fresh from their county football final appearance 4 days earlier, Ballina returned to hurling action on Wednesday night last week with a home game v Toomevara. In truth, this was a game that we never looked like winning. The Ballina boys looked a bit flat on the night and Toome took full advantage of the chances they were afforded scoring 3:07 to 0:05 in reply for Ballina. Due to a clash with a soccer competition this week, the round 4 U14A match v Newport/Ballinahinch is moved out a week to June 30th.

U12B Hurling Championship

Congratulations to the U12 hurlers who took on and beat Borrisokane on Friday night last in Borrisokane. Winning by a single point on a 1:09 to 1:08 scoreline. Ballina are now sitting very well with 3 wins out of 4 facing into the last game v Newport in Ballina on Friday June 25th. Well done to all !

June 13th 2010

U14A Football County Final

Ballina’s fairytale run to the county final came to a shuddering halt last Saturday with a heavy defeat at the hands of the Clonmel Commercials in the County A U14 football final at Templemore last Saturday June 12th. Clonmel ran the ball and moved with purpose from the first minute and in truth Ballina were always second best, losing many of the key battles all over the field. That said, the boys battled bravely for long periods of the game but were always struggling against a powerful and skilful South Tipperary side, who had strength in every line of their team. It was always a tough ask to beat a team such as this and one never minds being beaten by a great team – make no mistake that is exactly what this Clonmel team was. Well done to the Ballina boys for representing your club, parish and family with distinction and pride and on getting to represent the North in a county final. Comhgáirdeachas ó CLG Bhéal an Átha do Cluain Meala.

U12 North Hurling Championship

With the focus on the U14 footballers as they played their way to the county final, I neglected to mention the U12 hurlers last week. In the past few weeks they have had three outings, winning two and losing the other. On Friday May 28th they got off to a winning start beating Borris-Ileigh. A week later they accounted for Burgess at Kilcolman on a 2:10 to 2:05 score line. The third outing was against Kildangan and after conceding some early scores they hauled themselves back into contention only to come up just short on a 2:10 to 4:07 scoreline. There are two games left to play (Borrisokane this week & Newport the following week in Ballina ) so it’s all to play for and we wish them well.

County Final U14A Football

Ballina U14's won throught to a county A football final thanks to a six point winning margin over Arravale Rovers last Saturday June 5th. Ballina were losing at half-time by 1:02 to 0:06 with full forward Michael Hurley netting the goal. The team upped their performance in the 2nd half and held Arravale scoreless. Ballina's second goal came after a strong run and finish to the net by Phelim O'Hagan and sealed the victory. Everyone at the club is so delighted for the boys and their coaches. It's great to be contesting an A county final. The fixture is set for next Saturday at 3:30 in templemore.

2010 Lá na gClub (Family Fun Day)

The second annual Lá na gClub day was held in the GAA club last Saturday June 5th. The favourable weather meant that the venue was extremely busy with lots of children (U6-10) part-taking in the various blitzes, long puck and other competitions from 11:00-12:00. On a hot day, refereshments were absolutely vital and the sight of some of the organisers struggling across the field with boxes of Taytos and drinks prompted an all out assault on them by the hoards of thirsty boys and girls, who had put in a hard hour of hurling & football.

For the second hour the focus switched to parents' events - first up the penalty shoot out. Marese Coakley, captain of the 2009 winning team had to cry off at the last minute, to be replaced by her Husband Steve. Alas, the competition clearly had their homework done this year and there was to be no denying Adrian King's team consisting of Adrian, Karen McCarthy, Dave Gilligan and Maeve McEvoy who won the day with a total football approach. Special thanks to our U16 goalkeeper Adrian Hurley for his services again this year. Next up was the tug o' war. We were very lucky to be able to locate a suitable rope (thanks Mike). It was however extremely long and heavy so any plans for 4 or 6 aside went out the window and it was all hands on deck, with what seemed like the entire parish of Ballina Boher on the rope, equally split on each side! Teas and coffees were served to those still standing at 12. It was a very enjoyable morning's events - thanks very much to all the organisers who lined pitches, assembled goals, made teas and coffees and generally added to the festive atmosphere.

U14A North Tipperary Football Champions !

As long as Gaelic Games have been played at the fabulously appointed grounds in Dolla, there can scarcely have been a more dramatic underage football final played there. Ballina collected their second underage North A football title in ten days last Wednesday evening when the U14 footballers won a fiercely contested North A Football title overcoming a gallant Nenagh side in the most heart-stopping of circumstances on a 1:06 to 0:08 scoreline.

Ballina opened brightly with a free from Phelim O’Hagan. The remainder of the half belonged to Nenagh and they put immense pressure on the Ballina goalmouth. But there was no passing Jack Brady between the posts for Ballina. After 25 minutes of sustained pressure, Ballina were lucky to be only a point behind at the break. The second half saw a more even affair with chances at both ends. Changes to the Ballina team seemed to settle the team and midfield pairing of Thomas Conway & Conor Maguire were much more influential, carrying the ball up the field regularly. At the back, a more composed defence coped with the threat better with Ronan Bourke, David Kelly, Daniel Keating and Bill Floyd all prominent. Scores were hard to come by but any frees won inside the 40’ were calmly converted by Feilim O’Hagan. For all that, Nenagh continued to be stay just ahead on the scoreboard. Full credit must go to the Ballina squad and mentors for the way that they kept going to the very end. That faith was paid off when the Nenagh defence attempted a foot block on an attacking Ballina player inside the square. With seconds left in normal time and Nenagh ahead by 2 points, the chance was handed to Conor Maguire who had the opportunity to snatch the victory. If he was under pressure he did not show it as he coolly slotted the ball low to the goal-keeper’s left. Cue wild celebrations and heart-break for the Nenagh boys.

Although it was a night when the collective will of the Ballina boys as a team refused to give in, special mention must be made of Ballina’s goalkeeper who saved from every possible angle in the first and second half. As fine a display of goalkeeping as one could hope to see at this or any level. Many congratulations to the entire U14 panel and mentors.
