Ballina County U13 Champions 2012 !!!!!!!!!

Last Friday night was an historic occasion for the club when our U13 team captured the County B final in a thrilling game against Kildangan in Puckane. The sides were evenly matched throughout a fast moving first half and Kildangan went in at half time with a slender one point lead. It was nip and tuck early in the second half with Ballina drawing level with a great point from Anna Conway. Ballina started to gain control in the closing stages and with five minutes remaining Michelle Lotter sent the ball to the net to put Ballina in front. The girls were now in full flow, and Anna Conway added two more rapid fire goals. Kildangan responded with a late point but the referee blew the final whistle with Ballina victorious on a scoreline of 3:01 to 0:02. There were jubilant scenes after the game when captain Sophie McGrattan stepped up to accept the trophy. This is a fantastic achievement for the team who give their all every time they represent the club. It’s also a great step forward for the club in that it’s out first county title since we reformed 6 years ago. The girls are now looking forward to the presentation night which will take place in a couple of weeks.

The team was as follows... Hazel McMahon, Katie Dunne, Kellie Fogarty, Eve McCarthy Gilligan, Sophie McGrattan, Grace Keely, Clare Maguire, Michelle Lotter, Shona O’Sullivan, Anna Conway, Ellen Lane, Hannah Finnerty, Aideen O’Hagan, Maeve O’Leary, Laura Storan. Subs: Ciara Collins, Edel Ryan, Rachel Foley, Lauren Gough, Eimear O’Brien, Aoife Graham, Aine Sherin, Leah O’Brien, Laura Wallace.

In other news, our U8’s ended their season last week with games against Ahane where a great day was had by all.

Ballina U13’s have qualified for a County B final following a dramatic one point win over Annacarty on Saturday last. This was a great effort by the girls who had to fight to the end to hold off a physical and determined opposition. Ballina led by 1:02 to 0:02 at half time, the goal coming from Ellen Lane. The lead was stretched to 6 points with ten minutes to go. However, Annacarty fought back scoring a goal and two points leaving the minimum between the teams with three minutes to go. But Ballina fought hard and held their lead to the end winning by 1:05 to 1:04. The county final takes place next weekend gainst Kildangan with time and venue yet to be finalised. Also, our U12s play a semi-final on Bank Holiday Monday next at 1pm in the Ragg Camogie pitch. Again, the opposition is Annacarty. All support welcome for both matches.

It was a busy time for the club last week. Pride of place must go to the U12 team that won the annual Harry Brann tournament in Ogonolloe last Saturday. Ballina were first into action against the hosts in the first semi-final. After going 2 goals down they fought back to tie the game with two second half goals by Ellen Lane. The game went to extra time, and after the teams traded points, Eve McCarthy-Gilligan popped over the winning score in the last seconds of the game. In the final the girls faced a strong Oranmore outfit from Galway. Ballina were quick out of the blocks with Ellen Lane , Grace Keely and Maeve O’Leary all finding the net in the first half. The team fought off a late Oranmore rally who scored 2:01 in the second half. Captain on the day, Kellie Fogarty, was presented with the trophy by Maura Brann. The club would like to thank Ogonolloe Camogie who did a terrific job organising the tournament, and we look forward to defending our title in 2013.

The U12 championship continued last week. Our B team had a great result in beating Moneygall on Tuesday last, but went down to a strong Kilruane outfit at the weekend. Special mention must go to Leah O’Brien in goal against Kilruane who pulled off a string of spectacular saves to keep Ballina in the game. Our A team face Kilruane this coming Saturday and hope to build on their recent victory over Silvermines in an effort to progress to the county semi final.

Notes May 27 2012

Our U14’s ended their county championship run last week with a narrow loss to Boherlahan at the quarter final stage. The girls dominated possesion, but were very unlucky in front of goal, and just couldn’t get the vital scores to edge ahead during the game, losing on a scoreline of 3:02 to 1:04, with Mary Power and Rebecca Foley the main scorers on the night.

The team captained by Jessica Ryan, deserve great credit for their effort and application so far this year and this showed in the fact that they topped the group coming through with 4 wins and one draw. They can now look forward to the county league later in the summer.

Our U6’s and 8’s played in Newport last week and performed brilliantly. We had a turn out of 22 girls on the night and it was great to see the progress the players are making.
