County Hurling league: The senior hurlers started 2014 with a hard fought win over Cashel King Cormacs on a 1-13 to 1-09 score line in the Tipp Senior League. Scores were hard to come by on a soft pitch as both teams traded points in the first half, the first goal was always going to give one team and advantage. TJ O'Connell beat his man midway through the second half and rattled the Cashel net, leaving the visitors with plenty to do. Battle back they did though and cut Ballina's lead to two points which was down to hard work and clever use of the ball. But Ballina were not about to give and rallied taking on late scores with Paul Ryan and David Hickey[free] contributing to the scoring effort late on. On a difficult day for hurling the win was a very welcome one.
