Ballina captained by Thomas Mc Grath took on Borrisoleigh in the quarter final of the North Tipperary football championship on Monday the 21st on Borrisoleigh. A strong breeze favoured Borrisoleigh in the first half and they were very impressive and clocked up a 2-5 to 1-2 lead . Scores from Conan O’ Sullivan, Marc Loughran and Jack O’ Mahony kept us in touch. The teams were quiet evenly matched and all was to play for in the second half. Ballina had an explosive start to the second half with a well taken goal from Jack O’ Mahony , which was followed with points from Stephen Atkinson and a goal from Jack Lynch and another from Conan O’ Sullivan. The defence battled very hard and Jason Slevin and Gary Quilligan marshaled the defence well giving Borrisoleigh very few chances in the second half. Towards the end of the game Borrisoleigh did receive a penalty, however they only scored a point from it. They did however get another goal to set up a tense last few minutes in the game. Ballina did close out the game with another few points before the end. It was a great performance from Ballina who had to work very hard during the game to get the scores that they got. The midfield pairing of Harry Byrne and Michael Grace were tireless in their work rate and all contributed well to the final result of Borrisoleigh 3-6 to Ballina’s 4-7 . Ballina will face Borrisokane in the North semi final on Thursday May 24th.
