U12 Hurling: Our U12 Blue Team contested the group 5 knock-out stages in a blustery Dolla last Friday night. Both the semi-final and final were fixed for the same evening. Standing between us and a place in the final were the home team,Silvermines. The Mines got off to a blistering start and despite some great defensive work from Joseph McMahon and some excellent score taking by Conor Rowley, led at the break by 3-02 to 1-02. The wind was a factor and it allowed Ballina to generate scoring oppurtunities. The introduction of Shane Kelly and Ivor Larkin at halftime was crucial as Shane and Ivor terroised the Silvermines defense. Puck out after puck out was seized by Conor Rowley or the irresipble Kian Donnelly who delivered the ball into the full forward line. Shane Kelly showed a reals poacher's instinct to finish to the net three times and Ivor Larkin scored and won frees for his team all the way through. In the final, we faced Kildagan who elected to play with the breeze and were restricted largely to point chances thanks to the wonderful defensive efforts of Cian Commins,Jack Collins and Louis Storan. However, the concession of three goals leading up to half time dented our hopes. In the second half, the boys battled bravely and took many point chances but crucially could could not get the goals due to the excellent Kildangan defence. Evan Coleman scored from placed balls twice to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Team Captain Luke Kennedy was a tower of stenght and made many big clearances. Well done to all the boys on last Fridays night's panel which included four U10 boys and their coaches for getting to the North Final. Let's hope the Red team can go one better and win their Group 2North Final versus Toomevara in Borrisoleigh next Saturday at 10:30 AM.
